Everyone asking for iCloud and CalDav...

This is Outlook. Its only intended purpose is to connect to Enterprise Exchange servers. That doesn't mean it won't do or doesn't do other types but keep in mine Outlook's main job is to link Exchange Email and Calendaring Services .and OSX

Where to find updates

Just in case others are in Peter's predicament, here are the links you should use:

To get AutoUpdate, go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=27556

To get the Office 14.2 update, go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=29419

With the 14.2 update, make sure you are downloading the correct update for the loicalized language of Office you installed. There is a drop down under quick details that allows you to choose the localized version of office you are downloading.

By default the page should select the language of your OS (provided it is one of the 15 we build Office for), but this can be an issue if you are running your OS as Spanish and you have French Office installed. Without you changing the drop down you will get Spanish 14.2 Updater downloaded and that will nor work on a French Office.

AutoUpdate does all this detection for you, so you don't have to worry about running one localized OS and a different localized Office.

They have actually made Outlook usable!!

The only reason i was using it was to sensibly use multiple (4) mailboxes on my Exchange 2010 server.

Nice update!

I think it could be much better and honestly, this is how Microsoft should originally have released Outlook...

So this is funny. I was complaining on these very forums about the lack of Lion Full Screen functionality. I suppose I didn't realize at the time that the dual monitor problem didn't have anything to do with my settings. Now that MS has introduced this "functionality," I'm not going to install this update.

FWW I like Office 2011 quite a lot. It is by far the best of all the releases I've used (whatever has been released since 2001). It very seldom crashes, it works well. I do miss the toolbar though. The ribbon concept isn't for me. Like a number of others on this thread, ever since Apple introduced versions etc. I've stopped using Pages entirely. That said, despite the irritating save feature in iWork, Keynote is the best presentation software on the market, so I still use it.

BTW: I use Outlook exclusively for an Exchange Server using ActiveSync and it's been great (aside from the calendars), much better than Mail IMO.

Cannot update by calling Updater from outlook

Micah, you stated:

So, I open up Outlook, click check for updates...
Updater opens, starts downloading.
Opens a prompt from Outlook asking to close Outlook to continue installation, but will not allow me to actually close it.

Can you elaborate? Do you mean the prompt does not show any means to allow you to close Outlook OR that when you click a quit button in the alert it does not quit Outlook?

For those running on 10.7, we have taken advantage of a new API to bring down an alert in the updater that will allow you to quit applications from the alert.

For those on an older OS, the API is not available, and our own alert only informs you of open applications and you have to go to those applications to close them.

I was able to reproduce your scenario on Office 10.6.8, can you confirm these bits as well as check to see if you have any of the applications I mention still open?
1) Followed your step for bringing up the update and starting the install of the update
2) when the alert came up to quit Outlook I did
3) eventually, Outlook crashed and the Microsoft Error Reporting tool came up
4) I displayed the information revealed by the "Show More Information" button
5) I attempted to launch Outlook - no bounce at all in the dock
6) I closed the more information dialog, and then checked the option to have Microsoft Error Reporting to restart Outlook - again no bounce in the in dock and no launch
7) I completed the install
8) attempted to launch Outlook - and it launched.

If you cancelled the installation I think the reason Outlook is not launching is because Apple does not call scripts (like the Quit Apps) until part of the installation is done. Therefore, your Outlook is not in a good state. By completing the update, I got Outlook back in a good state where it would launch.

Thanks and let me know if that is what you are seeing.

"Word" of warning. My update is now asking me to enter the product key. I have a legit copy but it thinks its already registered, now I have to call Microsoft.
If you have a copy that fell off the back of a truck, be careful.

THIS. Unfortunately noticed too late and now can't use the product until I have my license key with me. Fail.

Outlook lost its database

After applying the update my Outlook 2011 lost its database daemon. It is now empty.

I spent over 2 hours waiting on the phone for Microsoft support. They told me they are very busy today because of similar problems to what I experienced.

I never did get to speak with the right level of technical support.

In repsonse to latest posts

CMega - could you please elaborate on you lost the database daemon?

As for those with activation issues - please let me know if removing or adding back an old copy of com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist makes any difference.

Thanks

David

Still no luck with the update despite renaming /backnaming the apps and correct location in folder, restart. Only issue is that I could not relaunch Outlook. Anything else I could try? My Mac came with a danish OS, but I have changed that to UK and bought a US version of MS Office.

In regard to Peter's post about the correct naming convention...

The applications all have "Microsoft " (no quotes, but do include the space) before each app - Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

Make sure the folder they reside in is "Microsoft Office 2011" (no quotes).

And make sure the Microsoft Office 2011 folder is in the Applications folder (it cannot be buried inside it).

I would recommend both a restart and then launching (and then quitting) each of the applications post name change before trying to install the update. This should insure the desktop database is up to date.

Let me know if this works (or if you are having more issues) - I will monitor this forum through out the day (I do have meetings and other items to attend to, but will try to jump on as fast as possible).

David

Is it possible you could find this file:
Code:
com.microsoft.office.licensing.plist
in your Time Machine and copypasta it into /Library/Preferences/ ?

I called Microsoft and after 2 calls and 3 hours on hold they gave me a new key - I don't have my backup with me right now but I would be curious if that would have worked. I think the license is tied to your machine isn't it?

Full Screen

As an update: Word now includes native full screen "functionality," BUT it also includes "Focus View" which, as far as I can tell, is full screen but does not utilize Lion's horrible (if you use two monitors) full screen. If this is so (I can't test it right now since I am on a single screen), then THANK YOU Microsoft!

BTW: I did not install this update on my computer. I am testing it out on a different one.

Cannot update Office 14.2

Peter

1) Please use AutoUpdate to try to update - it will insure that you have the right localized build coming down.

2) when the Installer fails, please press CMD+L to bring up the log from that install attempt. Change the drop down to all logs and then reply with the log information.

3) before you quit the installer, also launch the Console application (in Utilities folder) and copy the results from there to a reply.

Between the Console report and the Install logs, we should be able to figure out what is going on with your machine.

Thanks

David

Cannot update to 14.2.0

Thanks again for your assistance. I did initially use the autoupdate to attempt installing 14.2.0 but it didn't succeed, although it has detected the attempt (see attachment1). Subsequently I have tried using the downloaded installer, but it does not progress beyond 'Select a Destination' screen where is says 'A version of the software required to install the update was not found (see attachment2). As for the command log I have the following posting:

Update Problems with Outlook 2011

Update Problems with Outlook 2011 - Update

The problem was that software would not recognize the Main User Identity after the Service Pack was applied. It kept asking me to rebuild the database. When I tried to rebuild the database, I received an error message that my version of the database was older than the application.

After a total of 3.5 hours on hold with Microsoft over two days, i finally reached technical support for the problem.

They reported that call volumes to their (outsourced) call center in Nova Scotia were higher than they have ever experienced. EVER.

They took control of my Mac and 'fixed' the problem by copying my old identity to my desktop then copying the headers from that file to a new Identity. They rebuilt the new database after pasting in the headers from the copy. This did revive Outlook though several important Notes files are missing.

If you call technical support (866-474-4882) have a pen handy and the recording rattles of a web address with the KB (Knowledge Base) URL for this issue.

All in all, a typical bad experience from Microsoft. Microsoft does not seem to have any kind of proper quality and assurance group. It is amazing that we all continue to purchase their products when they show such obvious disdain for us as customers. Kind of the opposite of Apple.

Office 14.2.0 is not updated - KB Article for database rebuild

Peter, actually it looks like the update was applied. Notice under the Word version in your screen shot that it states the latest installed update is 14.2.0. That is why the update fails to find an office to update.

However, your update does not appear to have completed correctly.

1) Do you remember anything going awry the first time you ran the update? Need to turn off your machine? Install say it failed?

2) I would like to look at the install log from the first install (you can choose to post it so others can troubleshoot if they see similar problems or you can choose to send it to me as a private message) so we can find the root of the problem so you don't run into this again. To access the old install log...
a) launch Console
b) click the show log list button (top left corner)
c) display the install logs (from the disclosure list on the left choose Files | /private/var/Log | install.log
d) you are looking through the list (should be quick to find) for when you first installed the update - select that through the end of the file and copy that into a reply or a mail to me.

3) unfortunately you will need to reinstall. There is no re-apply functionality to the updater. I am truly sorry about that - and that is why I want to see your install log, because if something is going on during your update I don't want you to hit it again and be in this same boat. To reinstall, just drag the Office 2011 folder to the trash and then start your install - no need to kill preferences or anything else. Once the install is complete, since you had AutoUpdate on already, it should bring it up and offer you the updates. If it doesn't, you can manually launch AutoUpdate (/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU 2.0/

I am sorry this happened to you

David

----------

For those of you needing to rebuild the database (alert saying "Your identity is older than this version of Outlook. Please rebuild by using the last version of Outlook that used this identity."), you can find the KB article describing a workaround here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2702740

Mac Office SP2 install failed

Dear David,

I attach the log file, hope it is useful. The reinstall procedure is a bit cumbersome, need the original disk from my company HQ and then to get a DVD-drive . Maybe I'll wait till Office 2012/15.0. Any timeframe for the latter you can share?:) And once again thanks a bunch.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who actually likes Office for Mac a lot

I don't like it at all. I prefer Scrivener as a WP, Keynote for presentations and Numbers for Spreadsheets.

MS further annoyed me by making me reenter my activation code.

I recently rediscovered Scrivener and was interested enough to start the trial. I tried it out years ago and wasn't overly impressed, but this time I'm convinced of its quality in terms of usability. However, my main concern is with formatting. When I export a document with footnotes and the like to Word (eventually, it will have to pass those gates) will it be a time consuming mess? I'll find out soon enough. Still, I like this version of Office.

PowerPoint (Mac or Windows) won't ever be as good as Keynote.
