Full screen in Word is not new nor Lion compliant

Cannot see any updates to the full screen view in Word. It was already there, perhaps the 'Focus view' icon at the bottom-left is new but the same functionality was there before SP2. And it is by no means the Lion version of Full Screen. Or is there something I have completely missed..

Sure looks like the Lion version of full screen to me. Focus on the top right instead of the focus view in the bottom left.

Love my Macs but MS Office continues to be the office suite to use if you want to play like the big boys and girls. Whether it's a feature set beyond what I'll ever use, but is there if I need it, or reasonable, adult computing like Save As, Office 2011 kicks iWork '09s ass to the curb in an instant.

On Snow Leopard it's great to have. On Lion it's a must have. I still don't like Ribbon though. When I get to work and crank up Office 2000 (!) on my mighty XP Pro machine the normal drop down menu is so nice to have.

Still no CalDAV support - so lame.

This is what keeps iCal open all the time for me. :(

Also, it looks like I'm not the only one who hates Versioning in Apple's apps. I haven't lost a document from the old "Save As" system in over 15 years, but I've somehow lost half a dozen files because TextEdit saved changes I didn't want.

One of my BIGGEST issues with Outlook 2011 was that formatting on MY screen never looked the same on THEIR screen, especially if I had to copy and paste anything.
I'd send what looked like a normal email, but the person I'd sent it to would see mis-matched fonts, random font sizes, and special characters that I did NOT type.

Outlook is still horrible. I'm one of the (likely) many who are using Word, Excel and PowerPoint 2011, which were leaps ahead of the 2008 suite out of the box, but continue to use Entourage 2008 for email.

My critique of Outlook:
"Microsoft Outlook for Mac 2011 still not ready for prime time: My verdict on Outlook? Still a Massive Fail."
http://jonathanblaine.com/wpress/2012/04/microsoft-outlook-for-mac-fail/

Microsoft has yet to address many glaring omissions in a year and a half. I know, par for the course, but still inexcuseable. I'm wondering if their Mac "team" consists of a part time intern attending university, and who never even touched a Mac previously.

Outlook is still absolutely awful to use, tried using it for a little while and just couldn't take it anymore, started using the regular apple mail, might try sparrow, eventually, other than that, the rest of the office clients work like a charm and I absolutely love using them

Duplicate does the same thing as Save As plus it gives you more options. Open the form, click Duplicate, and then make your changes. When you click Duplicate it does what "Save As" used to do.

Or if you don't want to do that up front, just edit the original and then at any point you can choose "Duplicate" and it will let you make those edits a new file. You also get to choose if you want to revert the original back to what it was before you started editing it.

Great tip didn't realize it would do that I thought it would save the doc and then duplicate it not do a "save as" so to speak

"Word" of warning. My update is now asking me to enter the product key. I have a legit copy but it thinks its already registered, now I have to call Microsoft.
If you have a copy that fell off the back of a truck, be careful.

I've had that happen probably a dozen times, call them and tell them your computer crashed and you are trying to reinstall, they will give you a new key.

When it comes to connecting to an Exchange server for email and schedules, there's pretty much no choice. Yes, you can use Apple's Mail with Exchange, but it's not as reliable. And iCal isn't suitable as an Exchange client. I'd love it if someone came up with a reliable alternative, though.

No full screen in word dispite SP2

Weird I don't have this even though i auto-update to SP2. Is my update not properly installed or what?

Sure looks like the Lion version of full screen to me. Focus on the top right instead of the focus view in the bottom left.

But it clearly states that Lastest installed update (via Auto-update) is 14.2.0. And I cannot manually download and install the SP2, as it informs that that the installer could not find the correct Office version. Any suggestions as to why that is and what to do?
It has not installed properly.

It should read: Version 14.2.0 (120402)

Compared to Windows pricing, you get Excel and Powerpoint free with the Mac version.

Not really. The Home and Student editions (3-user license) of both Windows and OSX versions of Office can be had online for around £80. Neither version contains Outlook though.

Cannot install 14.2 because it says it cannot be found

In regard to Peter's post which states:

Quick potential solution:
  1. launch Word the same as you had before
  2. From the Dock press the CMD key and click the active Word icon
  3. Hold the command key down and click on the widget in the Finder window that tells you where the application is located

Do the first three items in the list look exactly like this:
Microsoft Office 2011
Applications
<the name of your boot drive>

If not, that is the source of your problem. Office needs to be in the Application folder. Also, the apps cannot be renamed.

For 14.2, we did work to prevent the Updater from saying there was not a copy of Office to update for false reasons. I am trying to make sure that we didn't miss a case in your scenario.

Question on your text:
- Are you stating that the AutoUpdate states 14.2 is available - even now after you tried to run it? OR are you saying that it no longer lists it for you?

Thanks

Sandman, I would like to understand your message a bit more:

It seems that I've missed an update. Rather than having me complete the missing update, required for this new update, microsoft update allowed me to waste my time downloading the newest update, even though the prior update installation was required.

AND

Of course, the newest update won't install on my MacBook Pro. Reason it's not very clear about

AND

but the installer won't run until microsoft update is quit too. Maybe they could program it to do this automatically.

None of these issues hold with what should be happening, so I think I am not understanding your scenario completely. Could you help by answering a few questions:

1. Did you get the update through the Microsoft AutoUpdate? Or did you go to the website and pull down the update?

2. When you say it won't install on your MacBook Pro, can you please give me the error message you are receiving?

3. Can you explain what you mean (alert you are seeing) when you say that the installer will not run until Microsoft Update is quit too?

Thanks a bunch - sorry to see you are having these issues, and I would like to help you get to the bottom of them so that you can have a smooth upgrade experience.

This is one of the things I love about Microsoft. Their people ask questions and try and offer help on forums. This isn't the first time I've seen this :)

Thanks for this quick and relevant response! I have previously shortened the app names (to get more space in the dock) and that may be the problem. Is the correct name following this protocal: 'Microsoft Word' or is longer? Adding 'Microsoft' to their names and restarting won't do the trick.
As to the Autoupdater, I initially installed it from there, but it is no longer available. I have now downloaded the update from the website manually but it is stating that 'a version of the software required to install this update was not found.
Once again thanks for you assistance.

Really?

So, I open up Outlook, click check for updates...
Updater opens, starts downloading.
Opens a prompt from Outlook asking to close Outlook to continue installation, but will not allow me to actually close it.
Updater then crashes all by itself; Outlook closes.
Outlook won't open again. Have to hunt down the manual SP install.

Yes, but with the Windows version, at the top of the window there is verbiage that the product is non-commercial only, ie you are not supposed to use it for business. The Mac version does not say this. Word by itself is $139 or which would be around £88 before VAT.

Naming convention for office applications

In regard to Peter's post about the correct naming convention...

The applications all have "Microsoft " (no quotes, but do include the space) before each app - Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

Make sure the folder they reside in is "Microsoft Office 2011" (no quotes).

And make sure the Microsoft Office 2011 folder is in the Applications folder (it cannot be buried inside it).

I would recommend both a restart and then launching (and then quitting) each of the applications post name change before trying to install the update. This should insure the desktop database is up to date.

Let me know if this works (or if you are having more issues) - I will monitor this forum through out the day (I do have meetings and other items to attend to, but will try to jump on as fast as possible).
