I recently rediscovered Scrivener.....my main concern is with formatting. When I export a document with footnotes and the like to Word (eventually, it will have to pass those gates) will it be a time consuming mess? I'll find out soon enough.

Andy Ihnatko exports from Scrivener to Word and finds it works great. Personally I do the final draft in Word and that works for me, but Scrivener is a lot better for writing the project.

Thats weird, it didn't ask for anything on my end. Normal install and done.

I wasn't so lucky, but after about a 5 minute search I found the Office 2011 box on the bookshelf (I have a few thousand books though ).

Another reason to dislike Redmond.

I wonder when they will support RTL languages (Hebrew/Arabic)

For many foreign langages, Nisus Writer Pro is a good choice.

Problem with RTL e-mails after SP2 update

I realize MS doesn't officially support RTL in Office, although from version 2011, Word documents have been able to (nearly) properly display Hebrew documents created (and defined as RTL documents) with a PC version of Word. Even editing is possible, as long as you start with a document pre-defined as RTL. The only problem is, it doesn't display hyphens for some reason, but that's not relevant to my current post...

Outlook has worked perfectly in Hebrew since Office 2011 came out: except for the fact that there is no RTL paragraph alignment icon in the ribbon as they have in the PC version, it has been possible until now to simply right-click in the text area of an e-mail, and select Paragraph Direction > Right to Left (or to select any text and do the same to right-align a portion of an e-mail). Any text then typed in Hebrew (and, I assume, Arabic) would then be displayed and received properly at the other end.

After applying the SP2 update, this no longer works: I can still select text and then right-click and select Paragraph Direction > Right to Left, but it will NOT change the paragraph direction to RTL!

I found a workaround (until this is fixed): If I copy text someone has e-mailed me in a properly RTL-aligned e-mail and paste it into a new mail window, I can then delete that text and replace it with new text -- and this new text will be right-aligned. But this is of course FAR from an ideal solution...

Is MS aware that they "broke" this function with the SP2 update, and is a fix on the way? I certainly hope so, since it's very difficult for me to use Outlook until this is fixed, I may have to go back to Mail.app...

Love the new Fullscreen possibility - and am quiet happy that Outlook can finally connect to iCloud accounts again (has not happened since the move from mobileme to iCloud for me), only thing still missing is ical, contacts sync :-(

Yes, still no contacts sync with iCloud.
I can sync contacts with address book using On My Mac, but this will not sync with iCloud & my iPhone contacts.
I can sync address book to my iPhone via iCloud, but no Outlook Contacts Sync.
I would like to sync Address Book with Outlook Contacts & iPhone Contacts.

Am I doing something wrong?

I keep all ms office 2011 microsoft updates, in dmg format, in my hard disk.
I keep them in case I need to do a fresh install
Do I need to keep all of them?
What it would be safe to be deleted, and also keep me ready to make a fresh install whenever I need it?
Do service packs include all previous service packs and patches?

What updates to hold on to

Most of the Office 2011 updates supersede the prior updates. When wondering what to hold on to, these would be your good choices:

- Office 14.1.0 (updates both 14.0 and 14.0.1)
- Office 14.2.0 (updates everything from 14.1.0 up to 14.1.4)
