MacBook:
Designed by Apple in California - Assembled in China.

iPod Shuffle:
Designed by Apple in California - Assembled in China.

BT Mighty Mouse:
Designed by Apple in California - Assembled in Malaysia.

iPod charger:
Designed by Apple in California - Assembled in China.

Designed & Assembled is completely different.

Where do all computers get assembled? the answer is above 3-1.

Apple makes the cases code their own software then buy from 3rd party vendors and their hardware is assembled by another company.

Windows sells their software to OEM'S who then buy from 3rd party vendors and their hardware is assembled by another company.

The difference between the 2....One makes pretty enclosures the other one relies on other vendors easthetic ideas. PERFECT BUSINESS SENSE.

I give it to apple though.
You know companies like dell, hp etc will forever back microsoft thats why microsoft will not loose. They have the biggest companies backing them.

And here is apple with a closed business idea no backing at all. but yet somehow make big corporations shake in their boots.

APPLAUD APPLE. Now that is power.

Sure they may be built in China, but the design and how they are built is still coordinated by Apple.

Thats a lot more than Microsoft can say.

Did they call Macs sexy in the ad, who calls the product they are bashing sexy in their ad?

LOL! Go get 'em M$. 'Bout time they did something about those Mac v. PC adverts. I don't particularly like the adverts so much as I like how they get under Mac user's skins.

But on the HP purchase, has anybody considered that maybe HP has a hand in the advertising budget?

It's so funny to me that we all keep arguing about this. It makes me horrifically embarrassed to admit that I majored in Advertising in college. Don't get me wrong, I'm just as guilty as the next MacRumors member, but these commercials are just commercials. Just like politics, it's all about trying to make the other guy look bad while pointing out whatever's positive about yourself. The funniest part is that Apple is just as guilty, except more blatantly so... with the whole Mac vs. PC ads. It was bound to happen that Microsoft would retaliate at some point or another.

I'm babbling since I've only had caffeine and like, no food today :p These advertisements are just really funny, especially since Microsoft doesn't have a leg to stand on besides Apple's price (which, unfortunately, is a great stance to take in this economic state). I mean, never mind the fact that Apple clearly has better aesthetics than any other computer out there, the more stable of the two mainstream operating systems (and no, no Linux distribution is mainstream... feel free to argue all you want) is OSX, and customer support is substantially better than anything you would get from the purchase of a PC.

Blah blah blah. I'm just repeating everything that's already been said. These ads are a snorefest :p

Considering it's the second HP bought...wouldn't surprise me.

These are some of the weakest commercials I have ever seen. I had to restrain from laughing at this one. The character doesn't want a Mac because they are all about aesthetics but he very obviously is dressed like a douche who only cares about aesthetic and image.

They're just trying to make it seem a little more "real" instead of an all-out attack against Apple. Of course, any intelligent person knows that it's all scripted, etc, etc, blah blah blah.

An analogy is a comparison of certain similarities between things which are otherwise unlike.

So yes, ATT and Microsoft are not exactly alike in the product they make or they way they advertise it. But the similarity I am pointing out is that they both use complementary products to advertise their own.

So I do not think the analogy is wrong. That's all I'm saying.

Except, as we've been saying all this time, these ads to not advertise a Microsoft product. At all. No mention of Windows or Vista or Office.

Now you're just beginning to sound trollish.

APPLAUD APPLE. Now that is power.

The difference is that Apple has a lot less hardware configurations available. So, like you said, they code their own OS and software to work with/take advantage of all the hardware configs available on Mac computers. And so, they can squeeze the most out of their computers because they know what kind of hardware they're dealing with.
Microsoft doesn't. There are millions and millions of different specced PCs throughout the world and MS can't possibly make Windows squeeze the most out of each and every one of them. That's why Leopard runs as smoothly as it does on 5-6 year old machines and Vista crashes on 3 year old hardware.

Bash microsoft all ya want, these ads are great because they leverage PC's greatest advantages. Bang for your buck PC's are better. You can argue till your blue in the face about lack of virus and cost of ownership, but the fact is at the end of the day when you walk into a store like this you walk out with a lot more computer for your cash.

The thing is, you and the other people who come to testify here how great these ads are just happen to agree with the message. But that does not make it a good ad.

These ads are actually rather poor and the reason for that has nothing to do with the actual message, but everything with the fact that they completely fail to adhere to very basic rules of advertising.

Advertisements should:
- Put a brand out there over and over to create a subconscious familiarity which will cause consumers to feel comfortable with picking that brand, and
- Associate a brand with a particular feeling, for instance reliability, comfort, luxury or coolness.

These ads don't do either. They actually mention the competitor's brand far more clearly than what they're trying to sell themselves. And the association they are creating is 'cheaper'. Now, that may work well if you're trying to sell car insurance, but it is a completely lousy angle for consumer electronics.

Macs are about aesthetics, AND power.

I still find is abysmal that manufacturers can still get away with making uglyass laptops.
Has anyone seen that Toshiba with the black stripe running across the palmrest? It's just disgusting.

Also, look at the size of most trackpads on PCs.

Macs are about aesthetics but yet Dell one of the biggest PC companies just released the Adamo all based on aesthetics.

Twice as thick, twice the weight. Not really portable. And yes its cheaper, but you have to run Norton on it, so that brings the price closer. And you pay for quality, that HP will be burn up within a year or two, a macbook will last a hell of a lot longer.

PCs are starting to catch up to Apple in terms of design. The MacBook Air is no longer the thinnest notebook and plenty of PCs pack more features in a nice design. They are also cheaper and used by more people. People forget that you can run AVG for virus protection (it's one of the best and it's FREE) and Adaware is great for spyware (also FREE).

The HP he got is bigger, heavier, and I think uglier but you also have to take into account the features he got. Larger HD, more RAM, larger screen, and a dedicated graphics card all for less than an average 13" MacBook. It's portable power. You can't have a notebook that is both powerful and really small. Come on guys... I would think you would know better and not just be mindless bashers.

It's about time PCs started fighting back after all the years of the PC bashing Mac ads.

Aaaaand:

"You get what you pay for."

Apple will never lower their prices. Apple will not take this ad "seriously".

The INTERNET isn't taking these ads seriously.

Hmm.. I just searched for similarly spec'ed PC laptops, and I think the price difference was about $200 which would have been fine with me if MacBook had a Firewire port.

Good idea, bad execution.

I'm fine with Microsoft partnering with Best Buy and HP trying to push hardware sales because HP sales = Vista sales. They screwed up royally with Vista ads so they are trying the backdoor approach instead.

The bad execution comes from these last two ads saying 'I just not cool enough to buy a Mac" and now "This is sexy" couldn't have been more botched if they actually tried. Why would you say ANYTHING GOOD about the competitor you are advertising against?

"Vista, it's not as nice as OSX but it's good enough for you."

LOL! Go get 'em M$. 'Bout time they did something about those Mac v. PC adverts. I don't particularly like the adverts so much as I like how they get under Mac user's skins.

Lol, i agree. The best part of the ad is watching the apple fanboys frantically throw flawed analogies and sling insults across the internet. The fact that everyone gets their panties in a bunch is proof that the ad is doing its job.

You're not talking about the Adamo right ? That atrocity with the big thing hanging out behind the screen ? Catching up to Apple in terms of design ?

Please...

I love the people who are bashing the machines "low" resolution.

Have any of you ever considered that most people don't even know what a resolution is? Most of them keep the default that came with their computer. And most of them couldn't give a crap either.

Then there are the few like me who like lower resolutions. All of my computers are set to 1024x768. Monitor sizes range from 10" to 21". And that's the way I like it, I'm sure there are others who do as well.

but the customer in this add was looking for power.... so he was probably a user who wanted descent screen real estate and quality.... so therefor the screen resolution isn't that great.

plus he seemed to take graphics as quite important which would also mean he would be in need of a good screen..... good graphics with a bad screen is a waste of time and money

Yes, that's true.

Microsoft is punching Apple again. And it's really got some good points. First, it was price. Now, it's the configuration. You can choose any configuration you want on a PC. But you can't on a Mac. I've got a white MacBook which is good, but it has features which are useless for me. I'd happily change the Bluetooth, the FireWire port and the N-wireless for more HD space or a dedicated graphics card. But Apple won't let me do that and I'm getting really frustrated of having to pay for features that I don't want.
