I don't understand the large controversy over these commercials.

Honestly, those "I'm a Mac" commercials were playing the exact same game, making Windows PCs represent middle-aged business men, and pointing out biased, and sometimes untrue flaws about the Windows OS and generalizing the computers loaded with it as well.

Honestly, this is just Microsoft fighting back, and it's nothing more than an advertisement. People who get so offended over something like this has me worried a bit.

These adds will probably help Microsoft take down Apple. But its not going to make any difference for me. If anything maybe it will mean a drop in price by Apple to help fight the "Apple tax".

Perhaps so, but how does that justify Apple's markup? Why would they charge you in advance for a potential future cost saving that's outside their control? That money isn't really theirs to take, is it?

Some even argue that it's worth the premium because "it just works". What manner of bizarre reasoning is that? Assuming for the sake of argument that Windows PC's "don't work" (whatever that means), why would you pay extra because a Mac "works"? Isn't it supposed to work? I think it's safe to assume that all products are supposed to work as advertised. If they don't, well too bad for the manufacturer in question, but that doesn't somehow make "not working" the norm and "working" some kind of added bonus that justifies a markup.

Although I do agree the Apple pricing it a little padded I still believe you get what you pay for. I have work as a Creative Director for a broadcast company for 2.5 years now and they've supplied me with some very "fine" Dell ingenuity, so far I've gone through 6 laptops in that time.

I have suffered mainboard burnouts, displays dying, one battery burning through the casing and one broken case. I am not rough with systems by any means and use it for the usual Photoshop and emails and occassionally take the laptops. I bought a Macbook 3.5 years (which has been handed down to my younger brother for a new MBP recently) and its fared much better than any of the Dells' myself or others' who I have worked with, although the price of the Macbook at the time equaled the cost of 2 Dells which in the long term was better value? One Macbook or 6 Dells (one of which was covered by Dell's phenomenal warranty)?

I am not say Apple isn't overpriced which I think currently you are not paying for hardware but a very nice green case. What I am saying is that the Total Ownership Costs aren't really covered in the ads nor do customers take any notice.... Once you take into account servicing, software, addition upgrades overtime a Mac maybe not so cheap or a PC may add way more to the initial sticker price.

Kudos to Microsoft who are selling Windows for what it is, it's taken them time to work it out and start selling its strengths.

Someone needs to tell those people that before they leave the store they should probably buy Norton Internet Security Suite and pay for the "Dork Squad" to install it and remove all the Trialware on the computer (so plan on tacking on at least another $300). :)

Another myth and lie! I have been running Vista on my Dell XPS 420 for over two years now and all I use is the free version of AVG. The second lie is also getting pretty old now since Vista ships will very little to no trialware at all.

No I am not a troll, I have used both platforms for years now and enjoy using both, they both have there own merits and faults.

Can you get a Macbook or Macbook Pro anywhere with Blu-ray, off-the-shelf or not? Didn't think so.

You can get a Vaio FW from Newegg "off-the-shelf" for $1300.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834117857

For $1300 you get:
  • XBRITE-Full HD 16.4" screen, 1920x1080 resolution smokes the 15" MBP and for all intents and purposes matches the 17"MBP.
  • Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz.
  • 4GB RAM (with Vista 64-bit to use it all).
  • Dedicated 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 video card.
  • Blu-ray drive that's not even available on a Mac.
  • Magnesium alloy cage.
  • Chicklet keys (that Sony had first and Apple copied) that work better than Mac's version.
  • 6.4 pounds light.

Like I said in the other laptop hunter thread, the Vaio FW offers performance and value in a nice package that Apple can't touch.

As for the "crap screen"? I don't think so. The resolution smokes the MB and 15.4" MBP and matches the 17" MBP.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But you have to have all those little stickers on the armrest.

All a matter of experience and opinion of course.

Indeed I started working with computers with win 95 and switched to OSX tiger in 07.

I still use pcs, but the apple OS is much easier to work with for me.

Haven't tried Vista - is it any good?

Wow, is this forum really going to have this same debate every time Microsoft runs one of these ads?

There's really only a few ways to go:
Opinion 1) Pfft, these ads are so sad! Microsoft is getting deperate
Opinion 2) OMFG Microsoft is lying!!!!!11!!!! Macs are so cheap!
Opinion 3) Odd, I thought the user wanted spec x and they didn't get it. That computer won't serve their needs, they should have bought a used iBook g4 off ebay if they were looking for a gaming machine.
Opinion 4) The person featured in this ad is an uniformed moron, mac users are much smarter because we can buy a computer from a company that makes computers for us to buy with our money. There for we are better *adjust monical*
Opinion 5) Hey, these ads are actually quite well done, they do a good job of highlighting an advantage that PC's have over the cost of a mac

I'm a switcher from 2005 but I still have my Windows machine around for the raw hardware power, tinkering, and gaming.

Microsoft finally stepped up to the plate and delivered a useable 64-bit version of Windows after their driver support debacle with Windows XP Pro x64. Windows Media Center provides one of the best DTV recording experiences that I have found. Volume Shadow copy also shows up providing versioning and recovery support on the small scale.

The only thing that I really miss from OS X is something like Time Machine for restoring my system in to a last known good state. Windows Backup and System Restore just don't cut it for me. I don't really use Time Machine for having to fly back to months ago to recover a file that deleted. If it isn't on my hard drive now then I don't need it.

at least microsoft has found a niche or 2 to sell computers. 7 pound portables. Computers that have long lasting 2 hour batteries. Cheap 17 inch laptops.

Now they can target their next niche apple doesn't which is the $400 netbook.

Well said and I agree 100%. And LMAO @ opinion #3 :D

Lock this thread up! Nothing more to discuss. ;)

Hope The Ads Works (kind of)

In some funny way, I hope the ads are successful - in the same way that if I am driving around in a BMW, the last thing I want to see are BMWs everywhere (sorry to use the car analogy again)

A kid that "needs" a gaming laptop? LOL.

That PC:
Weights more than the 17" MBP.
Has crippled Vista Home.
Estimated Battery Life: 1.0 to 3.0 hours
Firewire does not bus power harddrives.
800MHz DDR2 RAM instead of faster DDR3.

I heard Microsoft has a dozen such ads lining up, i would expect a gamer come up soon.

not they can't, but $1500 rally wont cover a mac. cheapest mac with larger than 13.3 screen costs $2000.

Wrong.

Refurb MacBook Pro look like new and has same warranty as new and they are much lower in pricing. (Unlike most pc refurb which has dramatically crippled warranty).

I'm a little confused. In the last two adds, Apples have been praised (sexy, cool). The only point they are driving home is that other brands offer cheaper alternatives, which is something everyone knows already.

Well, they have no creativity and probably though of the ads via committee.

Ding, ding, ding we have a winner. That is awesome it has made my night :D

I do not know much about GPU's so I don't know if the GPU in the Sony is actually decent for gaming, but if it is then finally something with a valid reason why( besides price) the person went with the PC vs Mac. Where the first wanted a 17" laptop and got one, but a pretty piss poor one. Then the second one wanted power, portability, and battery life, but then killed 2 out of his 3 criteria with his 16" heavy and thick HP. This one as long as that ATi is decent at playing games, will suit the kids needs perfectly where you have to spend $1K more to get a 15" unibody to come close to the specs of the Sony.

These commercials are so lame. I have yet to hear one really great argument as to why one should choose a PC over a Mac. LOL in the end, the kid shouts " Oh wow blueray !!" Like he would even really know what that is. He sounds like the typical kid that sways wherever the media takes him. A typical kid that's familiar with said name, simply because they have heard it so much, but they really have no clue what the hype is / should be about if there is any really. Then they actually purchase the computer based on this non-info. These are sad attempts . . at what? I don't really know lol.

BTW. Anyone know an alternative to ctrl-alt-del on the PC?

I want to bring up the task list as some software keeps crashing and my alt key doesn't work

Ah s'alright. Found it - right click on taskbar.

Yah, and sadly, in a year, that laptop will get slower and slower as the registry builds up.

It's not the registry - the registry is a database that scales well with size. Making the registry ten times larger doesn't slow it down noticeably for typical operations. (Doing a full scan takes longer, but that does not happen in normal operation.)

What slows a system down is downloading every little trinket and toolbar that you find on the web.

Look at a slow PC - how many icons are in the system tray, and does the owner even know what they do?

...it's been proven Vista runs better on Macs than most comparable PC hardware...

Please show us this proof, since it doesn't exist? If you find any case where it does, check that the systems are truly comparable.

As for Blu-Ray, I don't want nor need it in my Mac when I have a dedicated player hooked up to my HD projector.

If you have a MB(P), what do you do if you want to take one of your BD movies on a trip? Buy the DVD of it?

Oh oh, here he is, the pc troll.
...
- Vista 64 bits? Is that system that runs poorly 32 bits applications, does not run 32 bits drivers, and has therefore poor compatibility?

...says the Apple troll, repeating lies and FUD.

Vista 64-bit runs the vast majority of 32-bit apps fine, even quite old ones. I have Office 2000 installed on all of my Vista and Windows 7 x64 machines - no problems with the installer or the programs. (I also have Office 2007 and Office Live installed, but there are some tools in Office 2000 that I like.)

For a software or hardware product to get the "Vista" logo, it has to run on both x86 and x64 Vista. No doubt with buying new stuff - look for the Vista logo, and it will work on x64.

One weekend's Best Buy flyer had 11 Windows laptops, and 9 of them were x64 (because of 4 GiB of RAM).

You did know that Snow Leopard will require 64-bit drivers to run in 64-bit mode, right? That will be fun, it will break every 3rd party driver that exists... (Leopard is actually a 32-bit system, with the ability to run 64-bit apps. That's why it uses 32-bit drivers.)

Once again MS have put more money into advertising than fixing Vista.

Ummm, try repeating that when Windows 7 ships.

"that's too expensive"

what's wrong, didn't soccer mommy land a rich enough husband? these ads are stupid

Do you really think such patronizing and sexist thoughts, or was this meant to be funny?

Few realise how much the browser makes a difference.

Safari leaps along when ie6 is stalling at work.

Ummm. IE8 is the current release - hint, hint.

if Vista is so good why they don't they focus their advertising on it....

Wait for the Windows 7 ads, this CP+B campaign has a long term plan.

then the mac will have snow leapord don't forget that in fact SL will prob beat Win 7 to the market place

It's uncertain, and in any event it won't be a huge difference (unless 10.6 continues to slip).

i saw a review on win 7 the other day and it was being touted as XP all over again

What does this mean? Can you give us a link?

There are too many "facts" in these threads that start with "I read somewhere that..."

Haven't tried Vista - is it any good?

More people are using it than OSX, so it can't possibly be the "disaster" that the Mac vs. PC ads portray.

At this point, though, wait a short time for Windows 7.

These adds now really annoy me (I'm sure thats what they were meant to do) the ones with gates in were good but these just poke fun at apple. "lets go and look at the macs because they are popular with this age" since when did 11 year olds have enough money to buy macs? bring back the Gerry and Bill ones!

What a gay commercial

You know....... In general this is a really crappy ad. No information was there of value. I had the sense that they had no clue what they were doing. It was like "oh wow we can get a new computer for free through microsoft!" gee...... I bet. They'll by a mac....... NOT! Bottom line, to a kid physically big = more. Small = less. If mac made a comercial like this, it wouldn't make me buy one. Apple's commecials answer the obvious. That's why we chuckle when we see a mac vs PC ad because it's true. I think microsoft is going to hurt because they only focus on price. In order for microsoft to do better is to make sure windows 7 becomes a excelent user experiance. I support apple for one primary reason, THE OS! Microsofts os is simply ruberish by comparison to leopard. I've used the PC for 12 years and now have been using macs for 5 yrs while also using windows at work durring the entire time. They only use it because quickbooks hasn't come to Canada. Once it arrives my boss is looking at getting lower end iMacs and phasing out pcs completely. There would be less service calls to PC Blues. Kinds funny the name of the 3rd party IT service provider. The spirit of the name means "using a PC brings down your spirits"
