Does it still run Windows? Yeah?

OK, never mind then.

Why is that bad,

Microsoft today introduced the new Surface Pro, choosing that name over Surface Pro 5, at a media event in Shanghai, China.

Microsoft said the new Surface Pro delivers up to 13.5 hours of battery life on a single charge, a 50 percent increase over the Surface Pro 4 and 35 percent more battery life than the iPad Pro's advertised 10 hours.

The notebook-tablet hybrid features Intel's latest Kaby Lake processors, including Core m3, i5, and i7 chips depending on the model. Microsoft says the high-end Surface Pro with a Core i7 processor is 2.5× faster than the Surface Pro 3 and 1.7× faster than the iPad Pro with Apple's own A9X chip.

Surface Pro m3 and i5 models feature a new fanless cooling system, while the i7 model still has a fan with "improved hybrid cooling."

The new Surface Pro has a refined design with cleaner lines and curved edges, a "visually softer" camera, and an improved hinge with a 165º range of motion allows it to be placed in Studio Mode like its Surface Studio desktop.

It's also the lightest Surface Pro ever, starting at 1.7 lbs. By comparison, the 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro weigh 0.96 lbs and 1.57 lbs respectively.

The new Surface Pro continues to have a 12.3-inch display with 267 pixels per inch, compared to 264 PPI for both the 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Microsoft says its custom PixelSense technology means that colors on the new Surface Pro will be "more vibrant, precise, and impactful than ever before."

Other tech specs include up to a 1TB SSD, up to 16GB RAM, up to Intel Iris Plus 640 graphics, a USB 3.0 port, a microSD card reader, Mini DisplayPort, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device runs Windows 10 Pro.

The new Surface Pro is accompanied by a new Surface Pen with over 4096 pressure points, only 21 milliseconds of latency, and new tilt functionality. Microsoft says the new Surface Pen is over two times more accurate, with four times more pressure sensitivity, than the original Surface Pen.

There's also new Signature Type Covers, now designed with Alcantara fabric for a "soft, velvety" feel. Microsoft pitches typing on the keyboards as "easier, more, comfortable, more accurate, better sounding, and easier to do without looking" than the 12-inch MacBook and iPad Pro.

The new Surface Pro and Type Covers are available to pre-order today in the United States and select other markets at the Microsoft Store, Microsoft.com, BestBuy.com, and JD.com. The new Surface Pro will ship on June 15 in 25 countries. Surface Pro pricing starts at $799.99 in the United States.

Surface Pro models with LTE Advanced will be available later this year. The new Surface Pen will be available in the coming weeks.

I still do not understand why these sites continually compare the iPad Pro to tablets running a full desktop system. Though I enjoy using my iPad Pro for music creation and other light tasks, there is no way I would be able to use it for work. I require the full version of MS Office, Eclipse and Eclipse (CHE), a LAMP server, scripting languages, MySQL database, PhotoShop, Davinci Video Editor, etc. I will defiantly be buying the Surface Pro 2017, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Intel i7-7660U, external 4K monitor support, heck even mouse support is something I simply cannot live without.

I actually like Windows 10 Creator Edition and can't wait for the Fall version update, I mean have you seen their new video editor, it's worth having a Windows machine just for that. I'm running the Preview built right now and it's simply incredible guys, it's hard to make me excited abut software but this thing is just awesome. So is Eclipse Che with CodeEnvy, those two have redefined the way I program, it's just an amazing piece of software.

Look, I need a portable computer as I travel extensively, the MacBook 13" I was looking at is the same price as the Surface Pro but doesn't even contain a quarter of it's features. That and I now only use tablets, I've fallen head over heals with tablets, love my iPad Pro, love my new Samsung Tab S3 and my Kindle Oasis. So going backwards and using a regular notebook is not in the cards, especially when I already have a great desktop machine that took me 6 months to build. It's a HP Z820, 64GB RAM, 2X Xeon E5-2670's CPU's, 2x Nvidia GTX 1080's (recently upgraded from 2 Quadro K5000's, workstation cards are just a waste of money), Tesla K40 (bought used on eBay for under $1000, this was just luck), Intel Phi 7120P, bought used on eBay for $380, claimed was broken, wasn't), 1x 400GB Intel SSD DC P3700 Series and 5x Hitachi 15,000RPM SAS 640GB HD's Raid 1. I bought the Z820 from bennoshop.ch used for only $1400, great place to buy workstations from, their surplus computers from banks and government facilities, total cost after all of my upgrades was under $4500 as I bought everything used except for the GPU's.

I just mentioned all of that to state that I don't need a super laptop or tablet, though a Intel i7-7660U is no slouch.

Its because Apple leadership keeps positioning the iPad Pro as part of a post-PC era where an iPad can replace your PC. Apple has chosen to go with their phone OS as the platform for their tablet and they keep adding small enhancements to better support the bigger screen. They added a pencil, which probably caused Steve Jobs to turn over in his grave. They refuse to allow touch on their Macs. Apple is the one saying an iPad Pro is capable of doing your day job. I would never try to rely solely on an iPad for my job... so many issues with that. The Surface Pro, on the other hand, has the full PC in the bag, and Microsoft keeps adding small enhancements to make it a better tablet consumption device. They are coming from different starting points.

Yeah work arounds but I am discussing default settings. Many users don't know how to implement these work arounds and don't expect to........... even if its easy.

Macs require the same work arounds too. You cannot change the playing field rules.

So, recent benchmarks show iPad Pro 2017 to be ~80% quicker than the previous one...

Even though Surface Pro is a hybrid it is a better laptop than a tablet. Not sure why MS keeps nervously touting how much better it is than the iPad Pro when it is more of a laptop replacement.
Perhaps because they now have surface books and want to position the Surface Pro as an alternative to the iPad and the Surface books vs. MacBooks.

Perhaps they aren't nervous and it IS a better pad than the ipad pro? I think it might be but haven't laid hands on one yet.

Outwardly cannibalizing their own product? :D:p:D

The timing on these announcements is what makes me think nervous. If the Surface Pro is better, that's fine. It has internals to do desktop things which some people need and want. iPad Pro is is a tablet can do some desktop things and perhaps more.
