You got MY attention Microsoft! Can you load up the demo project for Final Cut Pro and let me know how fast that renders?

Oh, still only Windows?

Then, how does this comparison help anyone? Exactly? How much faster are you than your real competition, Intel or AMD? Oh, and how compatible, that would also be important. Unless those comparisons would not show you in a good light, of course. :)

A 15” HDR2 touch screen Surface laptop with 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD and 22 hours battery life is $1299. A 13” OLED iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD and 10 hours battery life is $1,648. I think Apple may be seriously challenged here. Especially iPad.

All of that is in vain when it runs Windows.

Wow. A 12 core processor is 50% higher multithreaded performance than 8 core. Who would have thought. Bet that’s not iso power though

Well if you are coming from Intel chips, that is a big deal. But it means that Apple's hardware advantage isn't going to remain as strong as it has been. They should try to compete on user experience - they were once wildly ahead on this measure. While Microsoft has made little progress, Apple has deteriorated markedly.

The competitor to the Surface Pro is not the Macbook Air so much as the iPad Pro with keyboard. That's still hampered a bit by iPadOS and lack of MacOS, although that is changing as time passes. If I were in the market for a portable, though, I'd go for the Surface over anything Apple offers as I want a full desktop OS on which I can develop software.

Yeah, Apple should only put its money in exactly one area (like its Macs) and not pursue any other research targets. Because that's what turned the 90s Apple into a trillion dollar company.
No one is saying that, but developing a car probably wasn't the best idea. Who knows how many billions Apple sunk into that failed project. That one didn't make sense at all given cars are a low margin item and Apple is in the business of producing high margin ones.

That's a plus vs iPadOS. If it were MacOS, that'd be different.
Tell me about it. I’m trying to get some music that doesn’t exist on Apple Music into iCloud Music Library and I can’t do it because the old Windows 7 PC that I have with the version of iTunes it supports doesn’t work with iCloud Music Library any more. But why should someone even need a Windows PC or Mac to do this? Why can’t it be done inside of the Music app on iOS and iPad OS? How hard can that be?

Obviously FCP is Apple only, but you can run Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve on the Surface just fine. Native ARM versions, too, I believe.

Pretty sure you can still get free updates to Win 8, maybe also 10 that might help you there.

Just like in the 90's, Apple was 5 years ahead and then spent the next 5 years chasing failed projects like Apple TV+, Apple Vision Pro, etc., and let the competition catch up. History repeats itself.
Exactly this.
Apples arrogance has put them in a position of having to catchup. It has happened to many many companies before - Apple’s reach is massive so they aren’t going anywhere but they are a far cry from being the visionary innovative company that they were in the past.

It starts with leadership.
Instead of worrying about releasing new pride bands and watch faces they should focus on what made Apple , Apple.

Change the guard.

People who are buying these won't be looking at it that way. To them they will be getting a laptop that is offering better performance for the same price or cheaper. That's how most consumers think. Unless, of course, they really need macOS then it's a moot point.

While I have no doubt that Microsoft is playing benchmark shenanigans with some of these numbers (not unlike Apple has in the past), the pricing and features are pretty compelling here. Especially with an Apple-like battery life.

Good to see some proper competition in the laptop and OS space. Hopefully it’ll light a fire under Apple.

Kinda excited. Some applications still need to catch up and update to ARM compatibility though, I think.
