Maybe I might just go Hackintosh.
I'm one of the rare users in the market to get a new desktop. If Apple doesn't update the Mac mini or enable target display mode on the iMac this year I will be building a windows pc instead (the first windows pc I will ever have bought after decades of macs). I use my external display for more than just my computer so an iMac as it is wont work and there's no way I'm buying the current mini.

Hackintoshing is a great way to get the hardware you want, but with an actually good Operating System. I would seriously recommend it.

Apple, add at least 1 extra USB port to the 12 Inch Macbook and Replace at least 1 of the USB-C ports of the new MBP with standard USB.

or indeed MANY will ditch Macbooks and swith to Surface.

It's just stupid and no one can defend these wrong design decisions.
Or you can buy a single USB adapter and stay future proof personally I haven't had to use an adapter since the first day I got my mac and transferred files from my external and I'll be buying a usbc one soon

True. I've just never understood that argument. Past pressing a physical key its still 1s and 0s sending a command, and is ultimately up to the operating system to decide whether or not to execute. A system failure still requires a restart.

Confusion on the possession of a physical key will continue.
If you ever used the vi editor, you would understand the argument.

I use the vi editor. Lacking a physical "Esc" key on the keyboard is a 100% deal-breaker for me. I am eyeing the new Dell XPS 15 laptops.

I'd skip the garbage Dell and look at the Spectre x360 15t or one of the Asus models....

Do a significant number of people really switch from Mac OS to Windows 10?

I would say even if it is a tiny percentage, this is significant. For years it was the other way around, and it just goes to show that there might be some problems at Apple.*

Plus, if they are switching to MS hardware, that is really good for MS.

I haven't switched yet, but for the first time ever I am considering giving Windows a chance.

A lot of stuff I loved about my Macs are changing, and not for the better.

*Before people start spewing sales records, profits, revenue, and other things, almost all of these things are based off of one product and I don't mean Apple is "Doomed!" or they will go out of business.

Its normal since only 1 mac was updated for a long time, mbp. When apple will update the rest mac mini, imac, macbook, mac pro we will talk

Regardless of whether PC manufacturers have finally come to their senses and stepped up their game to offer better products (about time), what this doesn't say is that Apple has dropped the ball big time because it got lazy sitting alone at the top - I'm looking at you, tbMBP.

I've been a Mac user for over 10 years because they were awesome.
The MBP is proving Apple is running for profit and not innovation.
Here's some key differences between SurfaceBook and MBP:
  • SB - 16 hours of battery life. MBP - 10 hour. In reality, SB is a little less with pro usage, but MBP is only about 2 to 3 hours. Pathetic.
  • SB - Has magsafe like connector for safety. MBP - got rid of Magsafe, one of the best inventions ever. This is ridiculous.
  • SB - Has touchscreen. Once you use it you never go back. MBP - no touch screen, but has touch bar, that once you use it, you tend to avoid it.
  • SB - Has detachable screen, where when detached, the OS changes into a tablet mode making it great for simple things like games, email, and browsing. MBP - can't detach screen, so if you wan't a tablet, it need to buy an expensive iPad. Obvious money grab.
  • SB - Has the option for Nvidia GPU, which is great for CUDA developement, which I do. MBP - does not offer this option. So stuck with non CUDA development.
Please let me know if I'm being over critical, but please justify you reasoning. Remember, I was a hard core Mac lover, and Apple makes more money than anyone, so there's no reason that Apple should be 4 years behind the competition. Tim Cook may be fantastic at organizing production, but he would be fired if Steve Job's came back to life for what he has done to the company. Yes, the stock is good, but that cause the company is running for profit. It won't last.

Here's the thing. OS X/macOS was never intended for tablet use. So you are comparing apples to oranges. Now if you want to compare specs, then yes that would be a fair argument. But as we have seen many times before. Better specs does not always equate to better software/hardware performance. Why would you consider the iPad as a "money grab"....I would understand if apple made a specific macOS software that could ONLY be used on iOS devices. But the two OS have existed for some time now before Microsoft decided to go with one software for all their devices.

I need a physical escape key too!

I got a Dell XPS 13 "Developer Edition" with Ubuntu 16.04LTS installed. $100 cheaper than the Windows version too. Loving it so far.

They make a 15" if you need quad core or a Xeon processor. Almost wish I had gotten that one as nice as my 13 is!

I might do this, as I have been checking out a lot of information about it lately.

I was also considering Windows because of some of the stuff happening with the Mac OS lately. Many things I use to like about it are changing. The new Photos app is horrible, iTunes gets worse and worse, and generally, there seems to be more bugs/errors/crashes than I ever remember.

Apple removes settings, and functionality to the OS, and things are slowly getting more of an iOS look and feel.

Anyways, I was thinking of giving Windows 10 a shot, as I hear lots of good things about it, because if Apple continues on this path, their will be little keeping me in their ecosystem.

Still using i7 intel 17 inch Mac Pro. put in 1 tb ssd drive, 16 gigs ram. Fast, & Lots of ports, thunder bolt and CD/DVD drive etc.. And this Mac is going on 6 years old. Hey, Tim, try and keep up. Would buy into IBM world if my Mac ever dies.

Bucking the trend here as I just got an iMac and am very pleased with it. Regret not doing it sooner as my old Win 7 box has been problematic for awhile. That said, not sure I would have been happy with the Macbook Pro given it's limitations for my usage.

Do a significant number of people really switch from Mac OS to Windows 10? Seems like a bit of a red herring to me even if Apple's current lineup is unimpressive.

It's a combination of laptop and desktop hackintoshes getting more popular for Xcode developers and power users, converts to Surface line for creatives and general Windows 10 for professional engineering software not available on MacOS.

What's wrong with a simple $9 adapter? Why should Apple put in a less powerful port?

As for the MacBook, my guess is that it never gets a second USB-C port. But even if it does, why is it OK for it to lack a standard USB-A port but not OK for the Pro?

Here's the thing. OS X/macOS was never intended for tablet use. So you are comparing apples to oranges.

Most Windows Apps were not built for touch either and they work fine. Touch emulates mouse clicks and with some Apple-sauce they could do it if they want to. About the only thing I can think of is the stoplight window controls would need to be made bigger. All else could work well with touch.

What are the MacBook Pro's limitations?

I also like a physical key press, many times without a physical key, you have to look at the key, or you might miss a lot.

You may not use the Esc key a lot, but picture the whole keyboard with keys like the touch bar, how would you know you are pressing the right key without looking? I bet a lot of people would have many errors in typing if this was the case.

If you haven't yet switched to a Microsoft Surface, do so now! Apple is train running straight into bankruptcy from bad products and overpriced watch bands no one asked for, with its stupid train conductor Tim and coal shoveling minion Johnny
Not sure about the train into bankruptcy, but I been running Windows 10 on my mac for years and I get the best of both worlds.

I never thought I'd say/ do this but Ive sold my macbook air to replace with custom build desktop mini tower for the money I got from sale :))
I've lately disappointed as many other with various things apple done lately and I made the choice.
Its not only I dont recommend apple at the moment to people, I tell them to stay away, Apples (under Tim are defiantly not where they used to be, it seems $ is their only priority).
Iphone is next for sale to be replaced by Galaxy S7
