I’m really sad to hear this. Not because I used cortana, but because Microsoft is in my mind the only non-ad-based company that has any shot of competing with Apple’s robust ecosystem, and a smart assistant is a significant part of that, and I believe will be more in the future. I’m all in the Apple ecosystem at the moment and am pleased with it overall, but with more competition, we customers would only stand to benefit more, no matter which ecosystem we choose. I’m still bummed windows couldn’t keep their phones going.

No wonder since Apple won't allow third party assistants (or music apps, or maps apps, etc) to be set as defaults.

This is typical Apple unfair competition.

I hope this more general issue is addressed soon by regulations.

Not that anyone will miss Cortana anyway though. 😝
Does Microsoft allow you to use Siri as a default on Windows or phones that run Windows mobile? 🤪

As long as the developers got payed there is nothing to feel sorry for. I am a developer myself and believe me.. I have worked countless times for different companies on projects that never saw the day of light.

Also projects that see the day of light do not have an infinite shelf life but tend to dissapear after a while. That is just a normal market mechanism / product life cycle. Taking no risks means not creating opportunities either.

Nothing to do with bad leadership. Companies are companies, not fortune tellers.

Ads-based meaning that’s their base business model. Apple has ads to some degree too but it’s not their main business model, as opposed to Google where it’s how they make all their money.

It was great while it lasted. Just another thing (it is getting to be a long list) that Microsoft screwed up.
Lol...take a gander:

Hi Cortana. You can go ahead and have a seat right there next to Zune and Windows phone. We will be with you... never
Uh...Zune was an excellent device and service. Their rich, graphical software was leaps and bounds ahead of the crappy "spreadsheet" iTunes app at the time. The device was also excellent and I preferred it to the iPod. Look around at reviews from back then...positive. ZunePass was also the first to GIVE each subscriber a free album each month to keep forever as part of their monthly subscription.

The problem Zune had was that it's Father was Microsoft, who couldn't market themselves out of a paper bag.

As expected, Microsoft today discontinued its Cortana mobile app. As a result, the company has ended all support for third-party Cortana skills and eliminated the Cortana app for iOS and Android devices.

For those unfamiliar with Cortana, it is Microsoft's version of Siri or Alexa, an AI-based personal assistant that can answer questions and complete small tasks. The eponymous mobile app was originally launched in November 2018, but apparently never gained a user base big enough in its short lifetime for Microsoft to consider it worth maintaining.

As explained in a Microsoft support page, from today, March 31, the mobile app is no longer supported, and reminders and lists are no longer available within the app either, although they can still be accessed through Cortana in Windows. Also, Cortana reminders, lists, and tasks are automatically synced to the Microsoft To Do app, which is available as a free download on iOS and Android.

The planned shutdown of the apps was announced in July 2020, when Microsoft said it would be shifting toward a "transformational AI-powered assistant experience" in its Microsoft 365 apps, which would involve refocusing its "areas of innovation and development."

The company has since improved Cortana's integration in Microsoft 365, such as introducing personalized, actionable briefs in Outlook for Exchange users, and adding Cortana to the Teams mobile app to do things like manage calendars, email, and join meetings.

In January 2021, Microsoft ended support for the Cortana integration in the Harman Kardon Invoke speaker, and created a Bluetooth-enabled device transition plan for Invoke owners to be able to continue listening to their favorite music, podcasts, and radio stations. In addition, speaker owners who used Cortana are also eligible for a $50 Microsoft gift card, which is redeemable up to July 31, 2021.

I love a good laugh!!

I have all Apple devices but depend on Google Assistant! Apple should integrate it into iOS along with Amazon's Alexa. I always turn off Siri when I get a new Apple mobile device! Never used Cortana!
Do you really think Google would allow let's say Siri to be an integrated assistant on the Android platform? Christ they still cripple Echo show's to this day by not allowing a native Youtube app. Further, they killed Windows phone chances by not allowing any native Google apps on that platform, minus the Youtube app, which they allowed briefly twice and killed twice. Microsoft did everything Google wanted, enabled ads in the app, and prevented videos from being downloaded, blocked it anyway.

The iOS app was kind of embarrassing but Cortana itself was a great personal assistant with some features that were ahead of its time when it was integrated in Windows Phone 8.1. Sadly likes lot of MS products it became an afterthought when the current bald and clueless CEO moved in.
