Hmm... I mean, considering I could run desktop apps on it and play desktop games (to an extent) on it, I'd agree. However, I think I'd also be comparing the Surface to laptops instead of tablets. I'm sure it would probably do as well there as it did here, it just seems like an odd classification to me.

Since when is the Surface a tablet? Does anyone ever use it without a keyboard attached or in portrait mode? All this tells me is people think a laptop running a desktop OS is more versatile than a tablet. That should be shocking to no one.

Microsoft is building better computers and better tablets then Apple...

Next thing you know, Microsoft may just build a phone and watch that bests the iPhone and Apple Watch, respectively.

And we already know Microsoft's game machine beats the crap out of Apple's (although I suspect the Nintendo Switch will beat everything else senseless in this domain.)

I have, its a nice tablet, though I have since sold it and gotten a Surface Book which offers a larger display, better battery and a faster processor.

Interesting scoring system. Exactly one in the "among the best" category, while the competitor that scores a mere 6 points out of 1000 lower is just "better than most". Having never used any tablet other than an iPad, which has very limited value for me, I can't comment on how accurate the assessment is. But the scoring is laughable.

And one which does function even as a phone...

doubtful you make many calls on your iphone either lol

it runs like an iphone and thus is why it fails. It doesn't utilize the screen size to it's maximum capacity like the surface does. If Apple make an iOS PRO that uses the larger screen size then we'd be excited but we still have after YEARs and YEARS just a few icons at the bottom, apps that don't anything differently than the iphone. That's unacceptable.

You had logic until you brought up the switch

Not surprising. My wife currently uses an iPad as her main device, but constantly has to switch back to the mac to do bigger word processing, etc. She really wants one device to rule it all.

We are looking at a Surface for her next machine. The way it seamlessly blends both multi-touch and pointer-based UI is really appealing to her - and me tbh.

I wish Apple would get off its high horse and recognize that maybe in Apple's purist sense they don't like mixing a touch OS with a pointer OS, but users want that. Enough with the Henry Ford analogies... these products have been on the market for a long time, so in this case, the customers DO know what they want. They are choosing what Microsoft is giving them rather than what Apple isn't.
Getting a hybrid device from Apple seems like a very long shot, since they make their money on hardware sales primarily, not software. It's in their best interest to sell you a Mac and an iOS device and then make the two work seamlessly together.

Obviously if the money really starts dropping into hybrids like the Surface, Apple will take note. But so far the two-device strategy has been working well for them, so it'll be a long time before this ship switched directions. And who knows, by then iOS may actually be able to fully replace a computer for most people, so they won't have to make a hybrid device at all. It'll be interesting to see how strategies on both sides evolve over time.

Problem with the iPad is not iOS, but the lack of capability in 3rd party apps; and a large part of that is due to the difficulties in making them financially viable. People don't want to pay more than the price of a cup of coffee for tablet apps.

However a macbook and ipad mini make a good combo, and weigh about the same as the surface.

For no more than I do on a tablet, the iPad is great for me. I use my MacBook Pro for my portable needs. However, the Surface is a great machine. It is time Apple and Tim started worrying less about Trump and other political statements and get back to building innovative, great products!

As someone who just switched to iPad Pro 12.9 from Windows 10 tablet I would have to say, nope, not so in my opinion.

It is nice to run a full desktop but it doesn't work right switching between desktop and tablet modes. Also it slows down horribly over time as Windows tends to do as it gets more and more bloated. Some models have really noisy fans that turn on. The iPad pro does not have a fan. I was in a meeting with someone who was using one and the fan turned on. It was difficult to hear in the meeting from time to time because of the fan. It was a serious distraction.

Yes, having a desktop and tablet combined is nice, however the drawbacks is Windows 10. It's a hot mess.
The iPad is limited by iOS. No file system. I returned my iPad Pro after a couple hours because it was too limiting. Yes I did the research and thought I could work around it but it was too much work. macOS is needed on the iPad.

The Surface Pro is a great device but it's not really used as a tablet by most. I see people using them all the time and have probably never seen anyone using it without the keyboard. It's basically a laptop replacement for most. And in that sense it is indeed better than most tablets, since it has laptop internals and it runs a desktop OS.
While acknowledging the Surface Pro, I have to say that it's not a fair comparison with other tablets, like the iPad. The iPad is much lighter, cheaper, and has very different use.
The base Surface Pro is $800 and with the necessary keyboard it gets to almost $1000, and weighs 2.3 pounds. You can't compare that to the new iPad starting at $329 and weighing 1.03 pounds. These are two different categories.

not suprising microsoft is out innovating them, its very disappointing considering all the billions they have...its now time for apple to take out the photocopy machine and start copying microsoft
