The iPad is limited by iOS. No file system. I returned my iPad Pro after a couple hours because it was too limiting. Yes I did the research and thought I could work around it but it was too much work. macOS is needed on the iPad.

No file system? Hmm, pretty sure it does have a file system, just that it's not user accessible.

Do you really want access to the system folders within the file system? Any reason specifically?

As someone who just switched to iPad Pro 12.9 from Windows 10 tablet I would have to say, nope, not so in my opinion.

It is nice to run a full desktop but it doesn't work right switching between desktop and tablet modes. Also it slows down horribly over time as Windows tends to do as it gets more and more bloated. Some models have really noisy fans that turn on. The iPad pro does not have a fan. I was in a meeting with someone who was using one and the fan turned on. It was difficult to hear in the meeting from time to time because of the fan. It was a serious distraction.

Yes, having a desktop and tablet combined is nice, however the drawbacks is Windows 10. It's a hot mess.

Well this article is actually about the Surface, not windows 10. Perhaps your assertion is correct that win10 is a jack of all trades master of none, (this making it a "hot mess"), but perhaps you are able to agree that the design, functionality, and expandability of the surface is superior to iPad (device to device).

Millions sold. 2000 asked.

Yea I'm throwing this in the trash.

Actually 2,000 is more than enough to get a statistically significant sample size

Makes sense going by the criteria they mentioned, but I am not sure I consider the devices in the same category. One is a tablet and one is a laptop, both doing very different things. Either way, it probably helps push Apple a bit, which I am happy about. iOS 11 needs MAJOR improvements on the iPad side.

Are you still stuck in 1990?

You've not used Windows recently have you? Windows WAS better back then, i actually loved Windows 2000 and NT 4, now its a schizophrenic mess, plus with Windows as a service it keeps changing. Windows 7 was the last tolerable version of Windows, and thats only because Vista was so bad before it, everything since then has been a turd.

As someone who's owns a Surface Pro 3 and an iPad Pro, I have to agree. The Surface Pro is so much better in every way. Of course I have no use for the pen on the SP3 and I never even bought the Apple pencil.

Windows on a tablet. *Shudders*

Similarly, you should say "OS X on a tablet *Shudders*" (you know iOS runs OS X, right?)

Not surprised by Microsoft's win here.

Am surprised that Samsung is almost tied with Apple. Have been sorely disappointed with every Samsung tablet I've ever tried.

Samsung may start to copy from Microsoft.

We have both a Surface Pro and an iPad in my household. My wife uses the iPad for web browsing, Facebook, and online ordering. It is a terrific device for content consumption like she uses it for since it is simple, the battery lasts a long time, and it wakes from sleep almost instantly.

The Surface is better overall though. When it comes to writing documents, tracking finances, editing photos & videos, and basically doing productive work the Surface is a better choice. I've also got the dock that connects it to an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor so it can completely replace my separate desktop computer. Portable, powerful, and can sync all my files on-device using OneDrive, Dropbox, or another file service. It can do true multi-tasking and the Office integration between OneNote and other programs is wonderful. It truly is one device that can do everything. The only shortcomings are some menus in desktop applications can be hard to navigate due to scaling issues and the battery drains pretty quickly when it is sleeping.

The iPad is just too limiting even with the Pro split screen and pen. iOS makes the iPad more of a large phone which is becoming unnecessary as regular phones approach 6" screen size. I think the number of people willing to spend a significant amount of money on a second consumption device is getting smaller as phones get bigger. A tablet that can convert into a full-functioning computer is what customers are going to want.

But but.... the iPad is thinner than ives a€€ crack

Never been a fan of Apple's form over function mentality as of late. I really loved the machines from the 2000's when form followed function. The fruity iMacs where shaped that way because the CRT requirement. The lampshade iMac, although a pain in the (_!_) to repair, lets you set the display height at any level you wanted. The cheese grater G5...best damn design ever.

Now it's thin, thin, thin.:mad::mad: Function takes a big hit because the obsession with thin.

You should have spent a little more than a few hours with the tablet, I usually spend 1-2 weeks getting used to a device. iCloud, dropbox, and a few other things can be a replacement for a filesystem. I don't know your workflow but I sounds like you didn't really give it a chance.

Don't forget about all the data slurping that Windows 10 does on the user.
Only today did MS release what is being sent to the mothership.
The list is considerable and for me is a total deal breaker.
I won't use Windows 10 (or 8.0, 8.1 for that matter).
You are at the mercy of MS with this OS. They force the updates on you.
You cannot refuse them.
And This POS comes out on top?
What a load of old cock. {as in male Chicken}

Totally biased survey. They clearly either didn't measure Magicality or didn't want to report those scores. :D

Problem with the iPad is not iOS, but the lack of capability in 3rd party apps; and a large part of that is due to the difficulties in making them financially viable. People don't want to pay more than the price of a cup of coffee for tablet apps.

However a macbook and ipad mini make a good combo, and weigh about the same as the surface.

And only cost 3x as much!! No wonder Apple doesn't want to cannabalize their revenue streams.

'Reputation'?

Microsoft has fallen on their face time and again with their hardware efforts. I mean, it's possible that they scored with the 'Surface', but dogs have been known to catch cars. From time to time... I tried one at a Microsoft kiosk in Manhattan, and found it cumbersome, and falsely advertised. The keyboard should never have been 'optional'. That would be like selling a car without an steering wheel!

Take away MS Office, would people still prefer a Surface?

I think MS have a good product and it's about choice which I'm all for.

Myself, still prefer the rMBP and iPad combo. Both good at what they are designed for.
