When's the last time Apple had to make a 900 million dollar write-off? The price drop has nothing to do with a new model coming out. By Microsoft's own admission, the Surface is not selling.

Microsoft wont give up on this project. They'll just keep throwing money and resource until it succeeds.

The $900 million was directly related to the Surface RT, not the Pro.
RT is a failure plain and simple.

The revenue reports demonstrate that neither version has managed to catch on in the market thus far.

Not only is RT a failure, but its continued existence seems to be hurting Windows 8 as well.

Not only was RT an utter and complete failure the Pro was somewhat of a failure too, but not as bad as RT. I bet the Pro sold to a lot of enthusiasts and maybe people considering an ultrabook, but it just had too many compromises to compete with the ipad.

The second round will be more interesting, although I still think MS is making a mistake in making a Surface RT 2, a huge mistake. The pro 2 is another story and may be the cinderella story of the year if they get it right.

I kinda doubt it. So long as they both carry the name "Surface", and their operating systems "Windows", there will continue to be confusion between the two.

Yep this is the primary reason I think RT was, is and will be a mistake, just confusing your consumers very badly. I think the surface Pro 2 will be an amazing product, but once again will be hamstrung by people trying to figure out if they should buy this or the RT unit.

You can't count out the Atom tablets yet though, especially with Baytrail coming soon which is supposed to be a very nice Atom cpu. Idiotically MS did not put their clout behind an Atom tablet and let the OEM's do it. They botched the launch and you don't really see them advertising, and if they did once again consumers would be confused also watching MS RT ads. What a freakin mess.

Everyone thinks their own implications are clear. That doesn't meant its written in a way others are able to easilly draw the intended inference. That's not the readers fault.

Re your use of anecdotes. I call it like I see it. It looks hypocritical. I don't think you meant it as counters example or you wouldn't be so sensitive to me calling it out. Rather you would have just said it was tounge n cheek right off the bat.

Sensitive? I was explaining myself because you didn't understand the meaning behind what I said. Anyway, you can over-analyze and break down what I said a thousand different ways, but it's getting petty. There was a misunderstanding, and if it's not cleared up now then it won't ever be. I'm done arguing, but feel free to have the last word if it will make you feel better.

Brilliant...

Please. The majority of corporate America idiots can barely format a Word document.

I, and many others, if not the majority of users can live with only Google Drive or iWork for iCloud, or standard iWork products.

Office is bloated and expensive and an endeavor in mental stress testing. A full blown office suite is not essential for most job duties but people have been conditioned after 30 years of Microsoft enterprise rule.

Personally I don't own office at home, and probably never will again. At work I use office 2013 and really, it's not doing anything better than my Google Drive or iWork to an extent that I need to pay $150.

Have you EVER tried to figure out that Office pile of crap? Tried to undestan the logic of Word? It is the WORST, most cumbersome, anti-human and ridiculous thing ever invented. And yeah, formatting a document in that mess IS a nightmare, fortunately one I left far behind when I joined Apple in 1999.

With you all the way, brother!

Cheers,
Cameron
