Microsoft Targeting Apple Stores With New Retail Store Concept

On the other hand, they better have on-the-spot replacement for Xbox 360 RROD.

Heh. Replacing expired 360s should keep the MS "Geniuses" busy 24x7.

Though Microsoft obviously won't call it a Genius Bar. They'll call it a Wizard Platform or a Guru Station or a WinBot Assistance Center or something.

Because derivative is how Microsoft rolls.

...and they all will be wearing Clippy T-Shirts. I will come in to their store just to see that. :D

Paul Theroutte is one of the biggest Microsoft cheerleaders. It's widely known that despite owning Mac hardware, he is not a fan of Apple. It is his private site and that's his business. I don't frequent his site nor do I pay much attention to him.
OT, but he's criticizing MS at the same level. He pretty much always bashes Windows Mobile in and out, and praise the iPhone. He even said that MS will screw up Windows 7 by selling them at the same prices as Vista, and he's right. There are worse tech-journalist-fanboys out there. Paul actually has valid arguments, and his site offers good information.

I wonder if the microsoft store will have anything similar to Apple's Genius Bar? If so what do you think they will call themselves?

lol this is so stupid, I bet the colors for the stores will be, red, green blue & yellow. Then the systems running self running demos will BSOD and the people in the store will say " oh this is just showing the new BSOD features lol". Then they'll have a giant statue of clippy greeting people LOL.
:apple: forever

I read about the guy doing cartwheels in the hallway after Apple Law called and asked MS to stop running the TV commercials concerning price.

Well, good job MS. Good job at helping Apple put their price points toward a larger market, which in the long run, will cut into your sales.

I would have WANTED Apple to stay farther from my pricepoint, and would have focused more on some other BS sales tactic.

if MS decide to open a thing similar to Apple's Genius bar, the desk at the Microsoft store would have to go in Boeing's Air hanger stretching the full length of it, with that many problems of every second of every day

You actually believed that article? I call BS. I highly doubt Apple is going to care about MS's laptop hunter ads.

They are going to open stores next to existing Apple stores? How are they going to do that if no spaces are available?
They will simply erect kiosks directly in front of each Apple Store, or simply buy out the lease of each neighboring Gamboree clothing store, and proudly sport illuminated shelves of Steve Ballmer action figures to lure spectators in. The sad realization is, to MS's detriment, setting up MS stores in proximity with Apple's will only make MS pale by comparison.

The Microsoft Guru division will require separate buildings in addtion to the stores, with the approximate dimensions of a Home Depot.

I see. Thanks for your uninformed opinion. It's Thurrott by the way.

...Sorry MS, this has failure written all over it. Too many people are familiar with windows, they aren't familiar with mac which is why the apple stores work.

Agreed. Rather than attempt to compete with retail store business, MS should put their money where their mouths are and offer financial incentives to buy more of their products or design new, revolutionary ones. After all, if you've seen one beige box, you've seen them all. There would be more wow in an Apple store than in a Microsoft one.

I am sure they'll push their consumer "surface computer" line. And it makes perfect sense really/

Should I go and play with surface computer or go play with ipod touch...hmmm

just drop your Zune HD on your surface computer and it automatically syncs songs ? .... oh yea baby..

Watch how crowded they will get ....

I mearly indicate that I do not visit his site on a daily basis. Last time I went there was about a couple of weeks ago. As if you would care...

And my bad on the spelling. I did not have it handy.

In my opinion, that is being generous. But thats my opinion. I don't like his reviews anyhow.

If they were smart...partner with a few PC partners.....then the rest just their software I guess.

Zune area? Xbox360 area? Smartphones?

There are things they could put....but partnerships with other companies would make sense.

They don't sell any smartphones.

If it's such a terrible idea, why are so many nervous ? Competition is good. Maybe Apple prices will come down again.

Microsoft opening a bunch of showcase stores is going to force Apple to drop their prices, is that all there is to this world, how much something cost.

IT IS 1999 if you are a window user  Not an issue since XP? Are you kidding?! Last I checked 75+% of businesses are STILL using XP, IT departments everywhere rejected the transition to Vista REMEMBER! The latest hot market segment "netbooks" are all shipping with.... yep XP BABY  HAHAHA and Win 7 is not a solid release... because, it hasn't been released yet unless you want to risk a Beta. No thank you, not for anything that is mission critical, so perhaps in October, but perhaps MS will push back the release like they did with Vista, then again that might not be bad thing...

Cite me a figure for 75% of businesses are still using XP please. And even if that was the case, if XP is so bad, why would 75% of businesses still use it?And the last time I checked... Vista was released over 2 years ago, so how is what happened in the first 6-12 months of launch even relevant at all?

FYI, many people have reported through forums that even the betas, not even getting into those using the RCs of Windows 7, are so stable they are able to use them day to day with no issues. The date won't get pushed back either, because guess what, it has already RTMd.
