At the cost of losing contents without any way to preserve it, while making cheating harder to detect and remove. As for piracy… tbh, if contents are so worthless that preserving is no longer possible smh, who cares about pirating them? Oh wait, there’s no way to pirate because local game files no longer exist.Great news. Cloud gaming service with AAA titles, now available on your mac. I really think that's the future across the board - really helps with piracy and cheating, and eliminates the need for money-losing hardware investments.
Microsoft is pushing game pass for PC pretty hard so I don’t think you have anything to worry about. As long as the PC doesn't get shut out from future releases, this is whatever (don't have an XBox or any other consoles). ?♂️
They are the largest because they put out all the MS suite apps that all require subscriptions. If your hope is paying monthly to play Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV then yes the future is very bright.Microsoft is the largest third-party developer for macOS. In contrast, the hope for Overwatch 2, Diablo IV for Mac may be brighter.
There’s a post on xbox wire website about the acquisition. Once the deal is complete, all developers will answer to Phil Spencer, Xbox CEO. So I’d say he’s out. Probably with a massive payoff, not that he deserves it!The biggest Q about this purchase/acquisition. Will this finally mark the exit of Bobby Kotick and the toxicity culture he has stood over and promoted ? We can only hope so.
I say Apple should:
Unity for all the softwares (that Weta Digital deal); it would benefit a new Apple-helmed gaming studio, and it would benefit a lot of AppleTV+ (digital sets & much more)...
- Buy Unity
- Buy Rockstar
Rockstar for the catalog & the ability to have GTA6 be a macOS exclusive for three months to a year...
Well Switch doesn’t really compete with Xbox or PlayStation the same way. They aren’t focused on 4K gaming. Switch competes with the handheld aspect and the great first party titles. Apple could do something similar. They don’t need to compete at the AAA level like some people on this site want. And I’m personally fed up with AAA industry. Especially with the last few big releases and all the latest NFT talk. They have no passion anymore. Just release the game which doesn’t work and is a buggy mess just for profits and micro transactions and now NFTs. Indies is where it is and has been for a while now."Phone games" aren't the problem, IMO. Anything that can run on Nintendo switch can technically fly on M1. Sure, it won't compete with Xbox Series X in terms of graphical fidelity, but that didn't stop Legend of Zelda Botw from sweeping every game reviewer off their feet, and being the best game I've every played.
That said, I do agree with your premise. Big studios bring a lot of talent that can really boost up the catalog. Indie games that can compete on story, narration and presentation don't happen every day, and often don't compete with the scope of AAA games. It's hard to think of a small indie studio developing GTAV with just their savings.
It's the difference between waiting for a magical, revolutionary indie game getting developed for your platform every few years, or committing resources to studios that can make it happen or already have a massive catalog you can just port over.
Sony IMO still has arguably better studios in their portfolio, but Microsoft finally appears to have started climbing back up. It's a long way up, though. Apple, fwiw, is still on start line, trying to apparently play a different game (pun totally intended). When "gamers" discuss stuff, Apple isn't it.
A lot of people say Apple should buy everything 🙄
At this point it wouldn't hurt macOS gaming if they did.A lot of people say Apple should buy everything ?
You can buy games outright on xbox/pc. You don’t need to have a game pass subscription. But if you like the content on game pass then it’s worth doing the subscription. They are the largest because they put out all the MS suite apps that all require subscriptions. If your hope is paying monthly to play Overwatch 2 and Diablo IV then yes the future is very bright.
Agree with you there, the quantity of good games on Apple Arcade is lacking. But if Apple had to beef up on in-house quality studios, they'd likely purchase much smaller, indie studios as Apple historically stays away from blockbuster acquisitions, and Nintendo would still be their benchmark. That said, I think Apple is most likely to keep purchasing timed exclusives or pay for bigger budget games the way they do for TV shows and movies today on Apple TV. They don't need the overhead of carrying multiple games/TV studios when they're making tons of money off content in-app purchases. Apple's head is in more mainstream tech that can do more than just play games. Their rumored AR/VR glasses has the potential to be their next iPhone, and it will still play games. While I partially agree, even our kids think Apple Arcade is laughable, look at Nintendo's iOS games, they are pretty lacklustre compared to console.
No. Games likes COD, Warcraft etc generate billions in revenue from in-app purchases.
Microsoft will still offer those games on other platforms. Don't rule out Gamepass subscription on Playstation just for games that run on that platform.
In the next few years, MS will care less about which platform you play their games on. As long as you subscribe to gamepads, MS will be delighted.
Money > Platform feuds
Microsoft are aiming for gamepads to become the Disney Plus of gaming with enviable IP.
There's an interesting debate to be had there... I'm sure Tim & Co have a market matrix with everything from cars to AR/VR to white goods and bath accessories... with where Apple needs to be with each in it's eco-system and what the SWATs are... gaming is the one where I think it can be successfully argue either way (though I think they'd be well served by having a strong presence in it... they've basically said it's important to the eco-system via Apple Arcade... perhaps for their target market light/casual gaming suffices vs. AAA titles).Microsoft knows the gaming industry. They are dominating it. Look at the world-class games that are included in this deal. Apple really needs to catch up and get serious.
COD is likely a significant portion of that 68B sorry the people spoke and they love spending money on cosmetics. This is where things are heading not the other way around. People like you and I are against it but there are plenty that are opening their wallets and ruining everything that gaming used to be.Sony wants to keep doing their stupid exclusivity deals? Microsoft will just buy out the studios... ?
On a more serious note, hopefully they can unf*ck the call of duty franchise. It's just a massive cash grab at this point. Last one I bought was Modern Warfare and that was a decent mechanics and graphics upgrade and nostalgic. After two more COD releases, they turned Modern Warfare into a giant ad space for the two new games. You launch MW now and you see Vanguard, Warzone, and Cold War before you see MW.
And you assume Nintendo would sell to Apple…why?I'm gonna say it and leave it here.
The smartest big tech CEO in history, will be the one who buys Nintendo.
*Looking at you Tim*
Re-read my post, before Christmas, *PC* sales of JP2 where disappointing, which lead to a significant stock value loss. Looks like FD had a good Christmas. Thanks for posting that.

I disagree about the lack of passion. Games like Days Done, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, SpiderMan (and Miles Morales), Last of Us all show there is still passion in the AAA space.Well Switch doesn’t really compete with Xbox or PlayStation the same way. They aren’t focused on 4K gaming. Switch competes with the handheld aspect and the great first party titles. Apple could do something similar. xCloud works fine on Mac.But will games on other platforms have all the same functionality as the Windows/Xbox versions, or will Microsoft do the same crippleware like Office for Mac?
Someone posted that Microsoft will continue to port Blizzard games to Mac. My point was sure if they make a gamepass for MacOS then yes. They aren't going to invest the money for a competitor platform unless its a subscription. A huge chunk of what they put out for MacOS is all tied to O365 and Azure subscriptions. You can buy games outright on xbox/pc. You don’t need to have a game pass subscription. But if you like the content on game pass then it’s worth doing the subscription.
No AAA studios left unless this acquisition is blocked by the Justice Department.Microsoft keeps acquiring studios. They really know gamings and streamers are next generation of big things.
What is Apple doing? Apple TV? not doing anything at all in gaming? start acquiring AAA studios and come up with a console.
Some of those aren’t even available on Windows PCs. Yet Apple gets all the hate.I disagree about the lack of passion. Games like Days Done, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, SpiderMan (and Miles Morales), Last of Us all show there is still passion in the AAA space.
With this deal, Microsoft will own King, makers of Candy Crush. So they get one of the biggest mobile franchises in this deal too.FYI: mobile gaming revenue is larger than PC and console gaming revenue combined.
