$8.5 billion?????

First reply says it all.

It is a questionable move on any level, but it does sound like they at least have a plan for it. If I were a shareholder, though, I would not be happy, as they are never going to recoup that value for that price. It is too much.

To be honest, something doesn't feel right.

To invest in Kinect/Xbox/WP7 and even Windows integration, they could have partnered with skype.

This doesn't feel good. :(

This was my thought... Kind of the same thing along with Nuance and Apple. Apple could have bought Nuance for around 6.5 billion, but instead it makes more sense for everyone to make a long-standing partnership where Apple gets huge benefits for a lot less money.

Seems Microsoft could have done that here. I think part of it might simply be Microsoft trying to purchase itself some relevancy, although I am not sure Skype is the way to go.

My guess is they wanted some of the patents, the user data base and software already out in play on it. The network and ground work is in place. I am going to assume they are going to tie it into their other service and it will be pretty good.

Well lets say from Apple, Facebook, Google and MicroSoft the company that I would most want to have it Microsoft and the one I would want to least have it is Apple shortly followed by Facebook. Google is a few steps below Microsoft but there is a huge gap between Google and Facebook.

Reason Apple is on the bottom of the list is I do trust Apple to not kill the product and then limit it ONLY to apple devices and then stop anyone else. I can not think of a single thing that was multiplatform that Apple bought up and did not destroy for everything but Apple.

Facebook would not want it because they would just bloat it up and shove their damn ads down on us.

Google because they would make it a toy but they still would not destory it and bloat it up.

MS because of how they run they are pretty good at things software side and tieing things back together and lately a lot of their more bloats stuff is becoming a lot lighter and better to use. I can see MS deeper pockets doing some really good things with skype.

You apparently can not think of any companies Apple acquired and stopped development of an existing Windows product on either.

I hope we will eventuallty still see Skype made for the iPad...

I'll agree with you on that. In terms of Microsoft's business, Zune and even Windows Mobile are small fry - attempts to coin in on the latest fashion. Big mistakes, they wasted money they needn't have, and that was probably when the comparisons to Apple started kicking up, because they put themselves out there and failed. (they're doing it still with Windows Phone 7)

Microsoft's core market is it's enterprise business - and that's great because Apple aren't actively interested in it.

However Microsoft aren't pushing the envelope. We get new versions of Office, but they're not that much different to the versions before -- in some ways they're actually worse. Ballmer doesn't understand how innovation works - he waits until a technology or market is already out there and being used (Azure anyone?), and tries to clamber onto the bandwagon.

The Microsoft of old, under Bill Gates, would have been buying up all these small developers - and they weren't afraid to upset a lot of people doing it. Ballmer wants to be big and cuddly, everybody's friend. Cuddly Microsoft is standing in the shadow of empirical Apple, and Apple are very sneakily getting their goods into the pockets of executives everywhere.

Apple may not want to (openly) go to the business sector, but the business sector may unwittingly come to Apple. Mountains and prophets.

The unavoidable fact is that Apple have all the headlines, they're winning hearts, minds, sofa time and very slowly bits of office time too.

Microsoft have all the resources to be able to grab the spotlight again - and the spotlight is incredibly valuable. They just need a new leader, someone with vision, leadership skills and charisma, to take them there. Until they get that, Apple will be seen to be winning, regardless if you or I think they're in competition.

Yep, and this all goes back to my statement that he isn't broad thinking. I'm glad we could come to an agreement.

Really? ;)

And what did Microsoft get in exchange?

Well they settled a significant lawsuit :). Everyone looks at it like a gift. If it was a stock purchase (I don't recall all the terms), it was likely the best 150 million MS spent in the past 20 years.

console sales are software driven. wii is not the leader in hardware:console - there's a reason why nintendo is announcing another console next month, and that's because they aren't bringing is as much money as they could be. Microsoft is dominant in software, services, innovation (by far) and accessories and the last year the 360 has been gaining significant traction

just glancing and the NPD chart gives you an idea but it doesn't tell you the whole story of what's occurring.
the 360 isn't going anywhere! If any console is picking up speed it is the PS3. the xbox's last big exclusive, halo, is now over.

all an xbox is and ever was... was a dumbed down pc.

Now kintect is new and innovative yes, however they are 5 years to late, now the 360 hardware blows! it is so dated.

you said dominant in software services and innovation..

software first party goes to nintendo!
software 3rd party goes to the PC/xbox
services goes to well Apple. on handhelds, followed by steam, then xbox live
innovation goes to to nintendo, from 005/06 to 2011, now kintect wins for innovation.

except not for long, cuz now there is the 3ds and the 8th gen consoles

"Xbox 360 was the highest-selling video game console in March, according to NPD Group, an independent market research firm. Xbox 360 has been the number one selling console in the United States for nine out of the last 10 months. "

This is the best news for Google Talk, probably Google called a bluff here to push MS into yet another blunder. GTalk will skyrocket due to this.

9 months thats good......

compared to the last 6 years the 7th gen consoles have been around

edit: ofcourse they are passing the wii now, because the wii is now over, next month wii2 will be accnounced, and next microsfot console will be launched in like 2013 or later

worldwide sales as of march 2011: xbox-52mil wii-94mil

almost twice as much

and it would be impossible to count PCs used for gaming

how about you provide me a company that Apple bought up were they did not muck up a multi-platform program.

I am not worried about MS not killing the product. They have a history of supporting things after they buy things up. MS being a software company first is a big thing to push that and they would want skype to keep running and important part is multiple other plateforms running it.

What a joke! Microsoft continues to try and mimic apple in every way! Rather then develop your own software lets take what others have done and stamp our name on it! Typical Microsoft Mentality! They Stole Windows from Zerox, They Stole the look of the apple store for their crappy stores! Now they buy a chat to compete with ichat and facetime. Microsoft fear of Apple continues to grow!

Msn has had audio/video chat long before facetime

I detest MS so much because I spent thousands of dollars on their software over the years and it never worked right. I had drunk the MS Kool Aid and thought MS was the end all be all to software. Then I found Linux and that was free and worked better than any MS OS I ever used. I felt cheated when I discovered I could get a quality product for free and had given MS a ton of money for crap. After Linux, OSX and Macs were my next step. I like the polished look and feel of OSX and design of the Mac hardware. At least now I know when I am spending money on computer software/hardware I am getting a quality product in return.

For you to complain about Microsoft so much I am going to say it's you using it incorrectly. User error.

Tell me your address and I will mail you a copy of this:

Blame the user. It's the Microsoft way.

Oh, and as a 20+ year user of Microsoft products myself, I agree with the original poster: their software sucks.

If you have been using it for 20 years and still can't get your head around it, then you were using it incorrectly or implementing it badly. User error.

You're holding it wrong...oops was that Apple blaming the user?
Ah yes, yes it was.

I never said that wasn't a boneheaded move. It was. But Apple hasn't built a business around making its users feel like morons, like Microsoft has.

If you have been using it for 20 years and still can't get your head around it, then you were using it incorrectly or implementing it badly. User error.

Yet strangely enough I'm the go-to guy for everyone in my organization when they have a problem with Microsoft products.

I know this will blow your minds, but maybe Microsoft software isn't well-designed???

*kaboom*

Same here.

But who does Microsoft blame when they're the user?

Thankfully, Windows 7 has solved everything.

Someone just tweeted that Windows Phone (come "Mango") will send text messages to Live Messenger or Skype over their phone if the receiving user is signed in on those services.

I guess they do have a few plans with Skype

Great, Microsoft officially bought Skype, that means you'll need a Windows Live ID to install the MS Skype download manager to install on your computer that will let you download and install MS Skype, in which it will also install MS Messenger, MS Messenger Helper, Bing Toolbar and who knows what other garbage.

Oh, and don't forget the "Windows Genuine Advantage" checks!
