This is a shame, I think it could have lead to more developers using Metal to write games to compete with Microsoft, and then Apple would have had a legitimate chance at getting into gaming on the Mac.

It would be in their interest to do it, too, since they have Windows on ARM (currently crippled by the Qualcomm deal) and MS games like Ori have come out on Switch.

Considering there are curently no Xbox exclusive games it's not a real loss.

I mean they’re “non exclusive” in that they come out on PC as well, but the age of Boot Camp is over.

Microsoft needs to allow M1 and newer Mac owners access to a ARM version of Windows 11, then we can move forward with playing more of their gaming content. Not like gaming is only iPhone/IPad centric for cloud based gaming.

Eh, Play to Earn games & NFTs are going to be the story of 2022. Kids making millions playing games all day. The future is here. No one is gonna work for minimum wage anymore. This is bonkers...

Bonkers indeed. 99starz is like, PAY to rent to play to earn. It's like pay to win freemium with the added perks of desperate high tilt stack management of trying to get your starting principle back.

In the long run if one is able to charge for things that does not invent, create, build, invest, distribute, promote or sell, on top of things that does not own if not for a layer … the OS … it’s the holy grail of passive income. They will do everything they can for this Cause. You guys don’t understand the amount of money such a scheme can generate once installed… By the way, nothing, absolutely nothing keeps them from applying this beyond the digital … whatever in app transaction … say you order from Startbucks … heck if they don’t deliver the game streams either why be so prudy with cups of coffe?

The question is, does the US law find this extortionist (the way I see it) market behavior legal or not?

Will see.

PS: This is not an App Store. I remember Steve Jobs presentation comparing what Apple was doing with the App Store to devs / digital businesses, with the likes of Game Stop kind of retailers … “oh we just halved the commission of those retailers”. Well those retailers don’t sell what is not for sale by them. I mean, imagine a world of one retailer getting 30% of say App Store “sales” because well they distribute and sold iPhones … sounds ridiculous right? Wellcome to the digital smoke screen because it’s exactly what Apple is just building the path for Google and MS do the same … passive income … the holy grail of … We will have this in smart cars, smart houses, … maybe even your “pacemaker” … after all its Apple tech that keeps you alive … hehehehe. All in the name of security and privacy …

Sopranos just lost their leverage to something smarter.

I’d love to be able to play Starfield (on an iPad? Sure I would, even if it ate up all my storage.). But since MS did to Bethesda what they’d previously done to Bungie, I suppose I never will. (No MS HW/SW allowed in this household as a policy.)

Can't wait for antitrust regulators to break Apple apart over the next decade, Apple has lost most of my respect over the past few years with these kind of behaviors and the insistence on growing their services instead of focusing on making their platforms better. I'm slowly transitioning back to Windows and Android, they've been fine.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with allowing Microsoft or anyone else to offer steaming apps. The individual game review is BS, the games are already rated by a third party body that MS has to abide to.

Safari doesn't restrict anything and yet I don't see Apple blocking Safari. There is no difference between Xbox streaming on the web app and doing it in a native app that could have better integration.

I hope the US congress has the balls to pass better regulations and give the customers the right to run different stores if they wish to do so. They probably won't do anything.

I hope Apple can keep xCloud out as it’s a Trojan Horse threat to small time developers what we don’t need is a return a repeat of history we’re in the 80s small time developers could make great unique games until the dark times before the corporation took over the industry and that is what Microsoft and Google want, Apple is the rebel our last hope

Can get them with xcloud, Stadia, GeForce NOW, and Luna and play them on their iOS devices.
Heh… sure, assuming cloud experience matches local experience in terms of delay, responsiveness, frame rate and so on, which I doubt.

Wow……
All of a sudden Apple becomes the challenger to overthrow the entire world, working hard to kill off every single enemy in the world……
What a Noble story……

Eh, bring exclusive games to M1 Native and you’ve got my attention. Otherwise, streaming can stream anywhere and I already have other devices that can stream that content.

I DON’T have other devices that can play macOS M1 native games :)

How would it lead to more Metal games? Apple doesn’t want xCloud to take off because it would mean the end of native games on Apple platforms. Now, the reason is that they don’t get their 30% cut if it’s a streaming service (that lets you sign up in the browser) and not because they care about gaming, but still. If cloud gaming takes off Metal gaming will never happen.

WWDC 2022 should be interesting, if it goes back to be being a live event. I can’t imagine that big changes aren’t being planned for the App Store.

I do think Apple is missing opportunity here. MS has been playing well with almost everyone which is a business strategy that is working well for them. Apple is still struggling with gaming (though improving) and this would be a huge win. With this iOS would be the ultimate mobile gaming platform and that means $$$. This was a good middle ground between what epic and apple were both fighting for and while the App Store rules would have had to change I think it would have been worth it.

I mean, you do what you want in your own house, obviously, but piousness is a steep price to pay not to enjoy the games/media you want, isn't it? Apple has had a sour attitude about gaming since 1984. It's not going to change. Better to look out for your own interests, because you can bet Apple is looking out for theirs and theirs alone (as this story shows).

Honestly, my Series X (and the XBOne that preceded it, and the Switch that shares space in the entertainment center) were the best investments in gaming I ever made. Solid hardware, plays nice with others, and an actual selection of games you've heard of. With the end result of me not spending a dime on games on my Apple devices. But I guess Apple would rather keep pounding sand and have 100% of $0 than 30% of something.

Apple is ridiculous with their store policies.

~3 years ago:
Apple got mad at the makers of the Spades game I play (Trickster Cards) all because they didn't like them listing their games individually on the App Store (i.e. Trickster Hearts, Trickster Spades, etc.).

They argued: they are all essentially the same webapp (just redirecting to a specific game) and could be accomplished by one app instead.

Now:
They demand Microsoft list each title separately, despite all the "games" being fundamentally the same: a webapp redirecting to a specific game.

Conclusion:
I'm getting my dedicated Spades app back.
