Here it is - the latest rumors:

The Blu-Ray drive will be used to install the game onto the hard drive, where then the game will run (not from the optical drive).

The Console will need to be online to run the game (a form of DRM).

Once the game is installed - that's it, no re-installs on a different machine.

Enjoy....

Hmm...add Windows 8 OS to the mix, and how will this be different from a PC now?

Still though, all rumors, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it until they announce it.

The only really plausible thing I have heard so far is the "cheaper model with subscription" deal. Question is though: Is the subscription your Live service with all the online stuff? Or will you need ANOTHER subscription for that? Will buyers of the more expensive system still have to get a subscription to play online? If they play this one right, it might work out pretty well, but it could also horribly backfire.

EDIT: Btw, your "latest rumors" are several weeks old. By internet rumor standards, that's pretty old! ;)

Xbox Business Plan:
Copy what the PS4 does.

I don't want to open up pandoras box of who copied who in the console world, but Microsoft look set to announce similar share functions to the PS4.

Also, If people have the ability to upload videos straight to Facebook, get ready for your feeds to be rammed with COD and Fifa footage that no one wants to see apart from the person who posted it.

It's just a regular XBOX Live account, but more per month and on a contract and you get the console for cheaper. Here's the 360 deal:

It needs 100% backwards compatibility with the 360, and all the content available on the marketplace. 100%. Talk of anything less is an absolute deal breaker.
inb4 "move on, man, etc.". People need to realize that these games we are playing are more than the quaint diversions from a few years ago. Computer/video games have emerged as a completely relevant media for rich story telling and enrichment. When I renewed my magazine subscriptions back in the day, the stack in my bookshelf didn't spontaneously combust. I submit that any computerized gadget today is capable of accurately emulating just about anything that has ever digitally existed, with the proper software and optimization (except for old Mac software on a new Mac. All other combinations are a go!).

Backwards compatibility is important for computing devices, but there seems to be 2 camps as far as consoles.

1 says BC is essential, and makes it easier to just play the old and new games on one single device with only one hookup to the display.

The 2nd camp says to just forget BC. BC tends to limit the next generation of hardware (Nintendo Wii U - seen mainly as an extension of the Wii) or increases the cost (the launch of the PS3). Console makers hate BC as it limits what they can do with the next gen and it's easier to sell the previous gen console at a low price or have people simply keep their old consoles to play those games on.

Hence, the rumors that there will be no BC with the next XBox, and the 360 basic console will be redesigned and retail at $99.

I know about Emulation, but that is never 100% compatible with the games from retail. You can buy download copies, but many times they've been modified to run properly on the newer platform.

BC is only important in the first year whilst there is a trickle of software.

Neither Sony or Mcrosoft are going to be offering real bc.

The always on, one install bull ****** would mean I would NEVER pick this up.

Check out the 720 Illumiroom

Looks like I finally have to buy a coffee table

Was just watching this a few minutes ago. Looks pretty cool.

Really hoping for backwards compatibility in some fashion. I have tons of arcade games on the 360. My receiver is about out of HDMI ports as well so another console plus keeping the 360 is not something I want to do. Excited for the announcement.

XBox Reveal tomorrow

In case you've been living in a cave, the Guardian has a nice summary of the rumors.

I'm really interested in the details...if they have real concrete stuff to show, it may make Sony's presentation seem amateurish, which would be a shame since we need competition in the console market.

Xbox (which, after the release of the 360 a lot of people called the Xbox 1)
Xbox 360
Xbox One

Where do they go next in this crazy naming scheme? It's so daft! I thought they'd have gone with Xbox 8 (with it slightly angled and possibly dubbed Xbox Infinity).

the show was a massive dissapointment to be honest:

Kinect: seen before
HDMI in with TV overlap ? i hardly watch TV anyways, so rather useless
Video/Music Store things ? only available in the US and "bigger" markets as usual
Skype on the TV ? nice to have but i suspect 99% of people will use it only once
EA Sports on new consoles ? what a surprise </sarcasm>
new Forza ? looks good but no huge leap visible
Halo Life tv series ? cheesy sci fi series ... how is this related to the new xbox yet again ?
Call of Duty ghosts ? new gameplay elements like sliding, leaning interactive destroyable environments ... welcome to 4 years ago; also i'll bet 5 bucks that in the story that combat dog is going to die ;)
NFL exclusive deal: no one out side the US cares

hardware: 8 cores, 8 gb ram, 500gb harddisk ... so ps4 and xbox one will be on par, so everything will be ok there

name: rather confusing for the english markets .. will do OK in the other language markets

Ok still no price?!?

The Verge is reporting that M$ is saying there will be NO backwards compatibility...

There was a funny comment over at Kotaku:
"XBox -> XBox360 -> XBox One.

Logic, we have none."

Then, somebody absolutely ruined it by explaining the idea was, you would have ONE box in your room for entertainment...hence...you get it...

Unlike the PS4 announcement, no one is talking about games.

Exactly.....

Real dissapointing reveal. We all knew the specs and its hard to get excited about kinect....

A big load of meh.....

Oh and the guy presenting the hardware (tubby dude who couldn't tuck his shirt in) had more make up on than a New York drag queen....

The One sums up why I don't bother too much with consoles, they seem to be forgetting that they are designed to play games, not watch TV.

Maybe they were saving it for E3?

But yeah I'd agree with you. PS4 reveal basically showed games for a 'games console' ...

This reveal we saw very little games and very little exclusives that would make me show more interest in this over the pS4.

In fact I saw nothing that said 'MRU - you buy every console at launch - you need this'.... Instead I'm thinking I don't need or have my reason to 'want' this...

I quite like the understated design... the less these things look like games consoles the better.

It's just a shame Illumiroom isn't ready for launch as that would have made things much more impressive. However, Kinect requires a large amount of empty space in front of your telly, whereas Illumiroom involves a coffee table or stand occupying that empty space, or a ceiling mount, which isn't possible for everyone. I'm interested to see how Microsoft solve this space conflict.

:apple:

Wow, that was incredibly disappointing.

Not that it's all about me, but I didn't care about any of that crap. I didn't get the point of this presentation, I'm sure the audience was mainly people wanting to see a game console, not a cable box+.

Quick thoughts:
Second-hand game fee
Same controller layout and functionality, in a new ugly case?
Where are the games?
What are you doing with Xbox Live, no really, the big features?
What benefit does your machine offer smaller devs? Sony were bang on with theirs. They showed big AAA and indie. In general the PS4 reveal was ace, we saw what the machine was capable of and where they wanted to take it. It felt like a games console.
It's a NES with new insides?
No backwards compatibility at all.

I'm trying to not compare it to other systems, but rather what it can offer me as a player and dev. But Sony really brought some incredible tech to the table with their reveal - being able to play PS4 games on a PS Vita (what did they call it, Playstation Platform? All games on all devices, and why not!), sharing screenshots (very addictive feature on Steam. I find it adds another metagame in, to just walk around taking photos) and videos. Systems and support inplace for small studios to make big games. Even Nintendo are listening now.

What I got from the presentation was MS aren't pushing gaming forward, in both services and hardware. I'm sure they'll have things to reveal at E3 and before launch but I hope it all improves. I've always thought Sony were best when backed into a corner, they're going to need a good equal rival. It's how we got PS+ after all!
