Anyone having problems with default setting? Whenever I open a document or start a new one..the document window appears on the left screen...and never in the middle.

^^^^Nope, MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint or Outlook documents all open in in the correct spot for me. the only issue I have, and have always had, is that Word most often opens up at 130% and I usually need to resize it to 112% to fit my screen.

I'm saying that if you want to look for problems in software you will find them.

In the space of a few hours I can go from saying El Capitan is an awesome free upgrade to saying its full of bugs and it's unacceptable given how much I payed for my laptop.....

I'm going to throug it out there, Australian English is British English , from my experience going through the schooling system, mostly .

What impact is having Australian English having over British? American English i would understand, especially in relation to spelling.

I'm actually honesty wondering what the Impact of Australian English is. I was not aware there was an Australian KB layout either...

In all due respects, I am not 'hunting' or 'searching' for bugs when the bugs jump right out at you or you cannot get your work done because Microsoft has crippled Office to the point that the only saving grace is the compatibility (or at least the better compatibility when compared to Pages/Numbers/Keynote) for those of us who need to transfer files to and from work.

There is a impact - Australian English includes a tonne of Americanised spellings that have been creeping in for quite some time where as I set my language to English UK because in New Zealand we use the standard UK spelling.

Regarding the keyboard, the keyboard is the same as the US layout but Apple offers an Australian setting which I select - it doesn't change the fact though that Microsoft should be respecting the language settings I choose in 'System Preferences' of OS X instead of ignoring my setting and trying to find it out some ridiculous way that in no way represents the language I want to use.

Honestly mate, stop defending what is a half baked piece of software by Microsoft who can't even be bothered getting the most basic functionality fixed. Again, I am not talking about bugs you have to go hunting for but hugs that stand out like a sore thumb of which El Capitan has few and Office has a metric tonne of - spend time in a forum outside of Macrumours and you'll see multipage lamentations of people's tales of woe relating to Excel crashing or grinding to a halt when dealing with large complex spreadsheets. The problems are there - you denying their existence won't magically make them go away.

I'm using office on my Mac, day to day it's fine. Your making it out like it's unusable . I have no love of Microsoft, though I am yet to run major issues that prevent me using it on my personal MacBook Pro.

just pointing out that all software that ships these days has bugs.

Though I have a few documents to do this week, so I might get back to you if I encounter issues.

mine works generally well minus a couple of crashes (not good given its only been about 2 days). also the icons get mixed up. e.g. the powerpoint icon changed to word

Scratch that, it seems to be crashing daily if not more than once a day. Really starting to annoy me.

I think it is just the last Office 2016 patch is not compatible with El Capitan, I installed the latest patch 15.14.2 and Outlook was completely unusable... crashed and could not be open again...

reverted to 15.14 ( thanks to Time Capsule) and now is working again....

I know a lot of people are having real issues with Office on El Cap, but I'm using the latest version of Outlook daily on two different El Cap machines with no problems whatsoever. Maybe because I have it hooked up to only an Exchange account and no POP or IMAP accounts?

I was using Word & Excel for a long time. After installing El Capitan both of them just hanged when starting.

The weird thing is after installing Apple Numbers, Excel started working again...

Then I thought "Hurray, now let's try Word".. But that didn't work. Then I installed Apple Pages...... Just as you guessed. Now the Word started working... What the heck?

I have found that the problem usually goes away after restarting you Mac with El Capitan.

The problem then bids up again but should resolve after a restart.

I know keep at least one document of each Office 2016 application open and the problem usually stays away.

Since OS X El Capitan was released to the public last week, Microsoft Office users have noticed some serious bugs when attempting to use the software. MacRumors has received multiple emails from people having issues with Office 2016, and there are several threads about the problem on our forums.

Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint are crashing for many Microsoft users who have installed Office 2016, and Office 2011 users are also noticing problems with Outlook.

Microsoft is aware of the problems with its software and has been responding to customer complaints. In a thread on the Microsoft forums, Microsoft Program Manager Faisal Jeelani said the company is working with Apple to resolve the issues, but said there is no timeline for a fix. Microsoft also gave Computerworld a similar statement:Customers who are running Office 2016 are running into a wide variety of problems. Some are seeing only occasional crashes with the software, while others are unable to open any Office 2016 apps at all. Many who use Outlook for email are unable to access their inboxes, and this particular issue affects both Office 2016 and Office 2011.Microsoft's first support replies came shortly after OS X El Capitan was released, which means the company has been working on a fix for several days now, but it is not clear when a patch might be released. Many customers on the Microsoft forums are growing angry with the company because Microsoft had several months to work out crashing issues ahead of OS X El Capitan's release. Crashes and Office 2016 problems were first reported during the beta testing period but remain unresolved.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson has told MacRumors that a fix is in the works.

No rumor, MS Word has been crashing, and the Fonts on certain documents turn into gibberish, now and then. But only on certain documents. MS Word will not auto save files while I work. When it crashes, I lose all work. I WILL NEVER try a new Apple OS until I check the results after a few weeks. This has been a disaster for me.

The El Capitan issues are frustrating, and somewhat reminiscent of issues with Office 2011 when it first released (in my experience, it crashed and hung all the time, especially PowerPoint).

I saw this post in another thread, and it certainly seems related to the discussion here, so I'll repost:

According to MS, this update does not fix the El Capitan crash problems:
Update on Office 2016 for Mac, El Capitan
On October 13, 2015, we released an update to Office 2016 for Mac containing great new features, security fixes, and stability improvements. This update doesn’t address the issues experienced by Office customers with OS X 10.11 El Capitan. We are actively working with Apple to ensure resolution with the next update of OS X 10.11 El Capitan.

I heard on another thread that an update to El Capitan is going to come out on October 21/22...maybe that will fix things, but, so far, no crashes have happened.

I am now only using office in Windows via parallels. My fonts are all funky on office or make. For some reason some of my fonts aren't showing up as bold when they are selected ad bold

this microsoft is very important for my everyday work and since i upgraded my os to el capitan and downloaded microsoft this cause me a lot of time wasted due to some freezing stuff etc. so how come i upgraded this and using microsoft if they are not compatible with one another it useless at all even the open office didn't work either i needed that applications.

The problem has nothing to do with OSX EC. It is an Office 2016 problem. I run OSX and OS Win10, both with Office 2016. The crashes/freeze are just as hard on both machines and using any of the programs in the suite is a crap shoot. Outlook on the Windows 10 machine is completely useless as requires hard boot just by me whispering "Outlook 2016..." ****! PC just locked up again!

Freaking amazing: Who makes Office? Too bad that mystery company did not have access to test the 2016 version against Windows 10, or OSX PRIOR to releasing such a huge cow turd. But don't worry as I take great comfort in the 1,978,647 responses I've gotten from Microsoft that state: "Thank you for the information. We are currently working on a a fix for this." Hey here's a novel friggin approach! How about a plan where you load and run the program, oh I dunno, AT LEAST ONCE prior to release and fix this BEFORE launch.

Whew...I feel absolutely bett....nope. Still pissed.

I don't know what the heck you're doing but where my work makes me dependant on Office, I am very sensitive to changes.

That said, I've had no problems with Office except the SQLite issue in OS X which caused Office to hang.

Are you saying it deleted your saved document that you had been working on? That's impossible. It's best practice to ensure you manually save your new document the moment you begin and save it every so often to ensure you lose the absolute minimal work in the event of your computer crashing/running out of power/app crashing.

Initially there were a few issues with 2016, but over the last 3 months or so it has been solid as a rock for me.
