Can MS also fix the BLOATWARE that Office 2016 has become?? Word and Excel used to be around 50MB in 2011, now they're over 1.5GB each!!

And those two programs used to install things in random places. I think they moved to actually supporting the OS X app model.
 
Some (most?) of you seem to forget that Microsoft provides fixes to their products back several years. Isn't Office 2011 even still officially supported on OS X 10.5? 10.6 I am pretty sure about that Office 2011 still runs fine on that OS (looooong dumped by Apple!). And they're still even thinking about fixing Outlook 2011 (mind you: the rest of that Office 2011 runs fine on OS 10.11! I can confirm that first hand!), even though they're already selling the upgrade 2016!

Apple on the other hand? Not even fixing crucial security fixes such as the "privilege escalation" bugs ("too complicated, too much effort") in 10.9 Mavericks! For ****'s sake!
 
mine crashes every time i try to select the text of more than one page at once. it turns the page black for a split second before word crashes.

That's a known bug in the new graphic drivers implementing Metal. Apple ****ed it up here.

I forgot, let's make the is Indiana Jones any important for the outcome of this movie test? What would have happened if Bill Gates never existed and never would have made copies of Macintosh OS called Windows and of WordPerfect called Word? Apple would have become the most profitable tech company in the world and Steve Jobs would never have been fired as head of Macintosh development. He would have defined the spirit and development of Apple Computer till the end of his life. And so third party developers would now need to adapt to fancy new versions of Mac OS 10 and remove the bugs before releasing their software to the public. Nope, we don't need Gates and the money he grabed from the industry. His contributions are neglectable.

My theory is that all those snippets of NSA snooping code in Office don't play nice with OS X's new security features. Just a thought. A very paranoid thought...:eek:

Office 2016 was already unstable with El Capitan beta. Worse, the side by side feature would render any Office applications' UI to freak out and freeze. Although I think MS will fix things, it is kinda lame the fact that Apple had made El Capitan available as public beta, meaning MS had access to it for some time already. At the same time, maybe MS only have a handful of people assigned to the Mac business unit, resulting in constrained manpower to handle projects as big as Office.

Office 2016 was unstable under Yosemite. Granted may of the bugs have been fixed over the last three months, but it still has too many problems to be considered ready for a production environment.
 
Not just the latest 2016 version of Office but 2011 problems as well. Outlook is crashing or hanging at least once a day. At least it does not need to have the identity rebuilt, which is a total pain. Outlook was reasonably stable under Yosemite.
 



Since OS X El Capitan was released to the public last week, Microsoft Office users have noticed some serious bugs when attempting to use the software. MacRumors has received multiple emails from people having issues with Office 2016, and there are several threads about the problem on our forums.

Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint are crashing for many Microsoft users who have installed Office 2016, and Office 2011 users are also noticing problems with Outlook.

Microsoft is aware of the problems with its software and has been responding to customer complaints. In a thread on the Microsoft forums, Microsoft Program Manager Faisal Jeelani said the company is working with Apple to resolve the issues, but said there is no timeline for a fix. Microsoft also gave Computerworld a similar statement:Customers who are running Office 2016 are running into a wide variety of problems. Some are seeing only occasional crashes with the software, while others are unable to open any Office 2016 apps at all. Many who use Outlook for email are unable to access their inboxes, and this particular issue affects both Office 2016 and Office 2011.Microsoft's first support replies came shortly after OS X El Capitan was released, which means the company has been working on a fix for several days now, but it is not clear when a patch might be released. Many customers on the Microsoft forums are growing angry with the company because Microsoft had several months to work out crashing issues ahead of OS X El Capitan's release. Crashes and Office 2016 problems were first reported during the beta testing period but remain unresolved.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson has told MacRumors that a fix is in the works.

Microsoft AND Apple should have been aware of this issue before the full release of El Cap. People, like myself, have beta tested Cap and noticed this issue months ago. Whenever it happened, I would always send a report with full details. My only issue currently is with Outlook.

Cameron, You may be satisfied with iWork and were are excited for you. But the Office suite is accepted worldwide in corporate environments and iWork is not a solution. Enjoy iWork, but don't expect everyone to join in
 
Stick to pages/numbers/keynote. I suspect no matter what Microsoft does with office, you will have an issue with it. FYI, for a non Rinky-dinky organisation pages/numbers/keynote suck coming from one of the richest companies on the planet.

Apple doesn't do more for Pages/Keynote/Numbers because it isn't a core focus of their business - it is a free additional software for those who want basic functionality, not some sort of competition to Microsoft Office. I complain about Office because they can't get the basics right such as detecting that my system language is UK English but it insists on using Australia English because my keyboard is Australia (why the hell doesn't Microsoft respect my system settings and insist on its own 'custom detection' scheme?) not to mention the missing CalDAV, CardDAV and ActiveSync from Outlook. I've listed in the past the issues I have with Office, if you want to ignore those posts then that is your own prerogative.

When iWork does pivot tables like Excel and formatting of technical documents (including with bibliographic plug-ins), then I might consider it.

Stories like this - be they for MacOS or iOS - always amuse me. Isn't the point of developer previews is so that developers can, well, PREVIEW the os and test for compatibility issues?

In the past, when I've run pre-release versions, I've found bugs in third party applications. I've then told them about these bugs and heard back the standard line that "pre-release software is not supported." And that's fine. But then a couple MONTHS later, after the release, invariably those same bugs are still there and now they have to scramble to fix them in a hurry.

Duh?

(p.s. I'm not calling out Microsoft specifically here, but the pattern does apply)
 
I was also having the pinwheel spinning problem with outlook 2011. My IT department installed outlook 2016 and it works great. My only complaint is the font color for unread messages. Is there a way to change the font color?

What gets me is the absolute lack of respect for Mac from Microsoft... again. Office 2016 runs beautifully on my Windows 7 system. It's fast, fluid, and has more features than the Mac version. Mac 2016 is slow, buggy, missing features, and (for many people) crashes if the wind blows. I've left it installed but reset the default apps to 2011.

I'm saying that if you want to look for problems in software you will find them.

In the space of a few hours I can go from saying El Capitan is an awesome free upgrade to saying its full of bugs and it's unacceptable given how much I payed for my laptop.....

I'm going to throug it out there, Australian English is British English , from my experience going through the schooling system, mostly .

What impact is having Australian English having over British? American English i would understand, especially in relation to spelling.

I'm actually honesty wondering what the Impact of Australian English is. I was not aware there was an Australian KB layout either...
 
I've found a what seems to be a temporary fix with Outlook at least.
I spotted it was crashing either immediately, or after 1 min – the time I've got my auto Send/Receive schedule set to.
So I turned that off.
And instead control click on the Inbox to 'Synchronise Now'.
It now works and doesn't crash, but I have to manually get new mail.
At least it works for now.
 
What about connecting to Exchange / Office 365 / Outlook.com using the APPLE MAIL client? My iPhone connects to my Office 365 email flawlessly that way?

(I, too, am one of the victims of the Outlook 2011 Pinwheel of Death on El Capitan (10.11.1 beta 2)
