Not happening. Apple doesn't need money from MS.

In other news, BusinessWeek got PWNED, just like the Gizmodo PWNED article I wrote last week.

I hope not. I don't use Bing, don't like its name, nor the way it works.
Google all the way.

IFF they are going to change the default search engine, I'd like the option to choose my own as default, such as Firefox does.

Quick comparison between the two on the iPhone. Went to google.com and bing.com and got these results. Bing thinks I'm in France? Or something? I live in the middle of the US! Not even that but it's ugly as crap. They better improve this! I also like how Google auto-hides the address bar. I'll be pissed if this happens because most people don't change their default and Bing sucks! I better not get locked out of Google completely or I'll chuck my iPhone. I'm not even kidding.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

I wouldn't be very upset if this happened. Despite the bashing on Apple fan sites, Bing is a decent search engine. I used a site once (can't remember which) but it gave me blind taste test styled returns for different search engines on one page. I had actually chosen the Bing results. Let's be honest with ourselves. Returning accurate search results is about all the innovation we need in our search engines. If Bing gets us there then there is no harm. Google has moved into other businesses because they've done just about all anyone should do for search. MS is not an enemy of mine.

After reading some of the replies, I think people are misunderstanding what happening (either that or I'm misunderstanding). Apple isn't going to remove Google from the list of possible Safari search engines. They are just going to make Bing default. That just means that when you buy a new iPhone or iPod Touch, Bing is going to be the default search engine. That doesn't mean you can't still change it to Google or Yahoo!. It just means you'll have to go into settings and change it to Google on your own. It'll take all of 5 seconds to do. Not a big deal really.

I dont care much for bing it doesnt have the same ring as google it

I'm not a big Google fan. To me it will always just be a company that the stock market built. I like the idea of Jobs just telling them "you guys are just another search engine" and can be replaced. :p

The Cruel Sea

The Honeymoon is Over Babeh!
It's never gonna be that waaaay again! Huh! Heh! Hoiyuh!

Apple defecting from the mother land...

With the China issue and now the ground shift from Google... it's a bit of tectonic movement in the infrastructure world...

No, just no. While I love Bing Shopping, this is an unholy alliance.

However, this is from an impeccable source in matters like this.

So Google introduces Android and now Apple is supposedly about to sign a search agreement with Bing, even though Microsoft has Windows Mobile?

Ah well, I have a HTC Hero anyway...At least I'll still have Google search :)

Bing shows the search results a bit nicer as long as your search for stuff like "cinema NYC", but as soon as you dig a little deeper with more complicated and less "obvious" search phrases, Google has far far better results.

Thing is, if I want to see what film is on in NYC, I sure as hell won't use a search engine, there are far better websites for that purpose. Might be different for restaurants or sth like that. Dunno.

When the St. Louis Cardinals needed a new baseball stadium, they had talks with the Illinois Government to move across the Mississippi.

They had talks, but it didn't mean it had ANY FREAKIN' CHANCE of happening.

That's probably what's happening here.

I don't buy it. They're saying Apple is working on a search engine and this supposed Bing deal is a stopgap measure.

Why would Apple roll their own search engine? It just doesn't jive with the rest of their initiatives. This isn't a Page 1 rumor, MacRumors.

Exactly. Some sanity in this thread.

More choice is awful.

Actually I've been told by several profs at uni that studies have shown the more choices people have, the less satisfied they are with their decision and the result of that decision. It sounds counter-intuitive at first but it makes sense. With three choices? I'm not so sure. But from that point of view, this is worse. Perhaps this is why Apple is so limiting in other areas of their business, and subsequently why they are so successful?

Sorry for double posting this, but I think double post in necessary here:

Instead of having 2 built-in Safari search engines to choose from, we'll have 3.
