I'm not sure if anyone else has said this, but here is my solution: Simply make an IE style search engine picker. When you open Safari for the first time after upgrading to 4.0, it will ask you to choose your default search engine from a list. 90% will pick to continue using Google, and the rest can do whatever else they want. Solved!

well, i love the idea of being able to use a different search engine than Google.

BUT... Why not be able to pick your own search engines, add away at will, like on Firefox????

HA HA HA you would have thought the world just exploded or someones dog died. Its a search engine for gods sake, if you dont like it then dont use it, as mentioned above just go to google.com

You would probably be right in a different world. But when it comes to Apple Vs. Microsoft, it has been more like a holy war for many years. Microsoft, the ultimate copycat and aggressor, winning the market by chocking the PC makers. Apple, the innovator, being the small dog, almost erased.
Now that Apple is strong, their innovation amazing, changing markets like the music market, mobile phone market (tablet market?), they shouldn't piss on Microsoft if they were on fire.

But yes. It is just a search engine. :D

People need to realize the iPhone is NOT just for Mac people. I'd even venture to guess that a good majority of iPhone users are also PC owners and acclimated to Bing! on their laptops and desktops.

Having Bing! as the default search engine would mean nothing to that user group.

The iPhone is much bigger than just Apple and Google knows it.

No, a majority of people are not "acclimated to Bing." Bing has tiny market share.

As Bing's market share (as per December 2009) is only 10.7 percent, this does not make much sense. Even the absolute majority of PC owners is using Google.

Pardon my ignorance, but does the iPhone let you change the default search engine?
You're correct. It does indeed do just that. Right now you can pick from Google or Yahoo! as the Safari search engine. Google is just default out of the box. If can change it to Yahoo! anytime you wish.

My point was the news wouldn't affect people the way it's affecting Mac users.

Bing may be the default in IE and perhaps the iPhone but people will probably switch the default to whatever they choose.

This is more of an up yours to Google than anything else.

And just a personal opinion. People think Microsoft is the evil enemy ?. Think again. Google is worse. They have less scruples than Microsoft.

I don't buy it

Look at your iPhone's Safari setting, there is a 'Search Engine' option currently offering two, Google and Yahoo. Bing may just want to be part of it.

Quick comparison between the two on the iPhone. Went to google.com and bing.com and got these results. Bing thinks I'm in France? Or something? I live in the middle of the US! Not even that but it's ugly as crap. They better improve this! I also like how Google auto-hides the address bar. I'll be pissed if this happens because most people don't change their default and Bing sucks! I better not get locked out of Google completely or I'll chuck my iPhone. I'm not even kidding.

You do realize that you are comparing a full site with a mobile site right? You are in m.bing.com. Try full bing and compare it to Google to make a fair comparison. (funnily enough, Bing is bloated in comparison to Google).

I'm pretty much don't care about Bing. I'm too used to Google I guess. But what some people it is most definitely true: it's great for porn.

(on another note, this had a highly interesting effect; now everybody here suddenly loves Google)

Potential game changer. Maybe Google can entice Ives to design the Nexus Two. That was a joke. Don't shoot me.

I love Apple, but competition is GREAT. Apple can only be a better company because of it.

looks to be that apple cares less about what users want and just does what ever they figure gets them more money. this is going to suck big time.

Apple has gotten too big for its own good and now we know who's next in line for anti trust suits.Apple has lost my support since the MBP 8600 debacle and this further reinforces my decision, that they are far too greedy now.

It makes no sense to make an inferior search engine the defalult on iPhone.

And what will the response be...
Picasa, Google Earth, Gmail Notifier & Chrome Mac versions dropped?

Apple needs to nurture a healthy relationship with Google - and vice versa.

Same here... Bing is good only for cashback, other than that... blows. No seriously, it sucks.

If Bing is made default, I will just switch it manually for find a hack to switch to Google, plain and simple.

You won't need a hack- you'll be able to change it in Settings>Safari.

The article doesn't say that Apple will stop using Google altogether. It just says that Bing! will be the default browser out of the box. You want to use Google? Change it to Google. You want to use Yahoo!? Change it to Yahoo!

Actually, now that I think about this, there is nothing surprising at all. After all, we already have MS products for OS X, Office for example. This is just another business decision.
