That'll teach Google

We'll go with a second class solution that our users would hate, just to spite you!

Well, certainly Google is paying for being the default now. If this agreement is about to expire, Apple might just negotiate with MS to see how much it is worth to them. And then offer it to Google for 10% less :)

This whole Apple : Google rivalry is blown out of proportion by the media. I will ROFLMFAO if Apple is announcing an updated Google Maps version with turn-by-turn navigation and Google Voice to be part of the iPhone OS 4.0.

I think it's fake. However the only negotiation that could happen with Microsoft will be with Silverlight. Apple needs to add somekind of pluging to the iPhone which do the same work that Adobe flash do. Apple don't want flash for the iPhone, so the only alternative will be Silverlight.

Actually I've been told by several profs at uni that studies have shown the more choices people have, the less satisfied they are with their decision and the result of that decision. It sounds counter-intuitive at first but it makes sense. With three choices? I'm not so sure. But from that point of view, this is worse. Perhaps this is why Apple is so limiting in other areas of their business, and subsequently why they are so successful?

I don't know how to respond to that. Too many choices as to how to respond....

You're right

I don't buy it. They're saying Apple is working on a search engine and this supposed Bing deal is a stopgap measure..

It would make better sense that Apple is allowing opt-in for Bing, not a replacement.

Given the history and the Apple-Microsoft competitive nature it would be an unlikely turn to replace.

Apple are most undoubtedly spending their skunk works dosh on search research amongst other things whilst building data center/mining/cloud infrastructure.

It would tend towards a slightly more open approach to their browser platform, with the intent to open up their own search services.

Verizon forced it on their blackberry users, you cant even delete it on mine, if i delete the files and service books Bing is just pushed back on it a day later.

Replacing Google on Safari with Bing won't thrill me in the least. Hope that doesn't happen.

what diff would it make. you could just go to google.com.

frankly i don't buy this rumor anyway. the sources are the typical vague, there's really not that heavy a war between google and apple as it suggests and in honesty Microsoft is the one that really benefits from this rumor because it makes Bing.com sound like the new It thing cause Apple wants to play with it.

Now if the rumor was that Microsoft filed a complaint about Apple's use of Google as THE search tool in safari with no user option to change it to a different engine (such as Bing), that I could believe as possible.

HA HA HA you would have thought the world just exploded or someones dog died. Its a search engine for gods sake, if you dont like it then dont use it, as mentioned above just go to google.com

It's not like you're using WinMo.

Just switch it back to Google then.

Also, this is a rumour, after all.

When the St. Louis Cardinals needed a new baseball stadium, they had talks with the Illinois Government to move across the Mississippi.

They had talks, but it didn't mean it had ANY FREAKIN' CHANCE of happening.

That's probably what's happening here.

Where...in East St Louis? I had a roommate from Fenton and when I went home with him to stay at his parents house (I'm from KC) I said I wanted to go across the river and take some shots of the Arch at night. He said there's no way in hell we're going over there with our gear at night. It's supposed to be really dangerous. I almost bought a car the other day but then I discovered that it had a salvage title on it for being stolen and recovered in East St Louis. That place blows.

I don't buy it. They're saying Apple is working on a search engine and this supposed Bing deal is a stopgap measure.

Why would Apple roll their own search engine? It just doesn't jive with the rest of their initiatives. This isn't a Page 1 rumor, MacRumors.

Because they have--whats it up to now--31 billion dollars in cash? They don't want to just stand by and let Google conquer the tech world. They wanted admob, Google got it, and they snatched up that other mobile ad company instead. Google wanted Lala and Apple snatched it up. Google is making phones and wanting to sell music. Apple makes phones and sells music but doesn't sell advertising or serve up search results. Google is hot right now. Apple is too. Apple needs to stay ahead and offer something better. I think they just might do it, and have the cash reserves to make it happen. iPhone sales aren't going anywhere! OS 4.0, IMO, will knock the crap out of Android for, I think, at least 80% of Android users. Only the hardcore will think they are better or need something that 4.0 will lack, but 4.0 will deliver so much more. I'm more stoked about that then the Tablet or anything else. Don't get me wrong, Android will catch up again, but Apple will be keeping things at a high level now that they've been put on alert. I just hope that Google keeps the pressure on them because this is great for all of us!

Says who... you? THe OS and handheld wars are two completely different arenas. Between MS, Apple, and Google, MS has the OS war won multiple times over. The handheld war is just warming up between Apple and Google. Having MS on its side would be nothing but a benefit to Apple. Mind you, this is all over ad revenue. Make it harder for people to find Google from an iPhone, make it harder for Google to make money off mobile ads.

From a business perspective I am sure Microsoft is willing to pay dearly to make Bing the default search for the iPhone which is great for Apple.
However, I think the majority of people would be upset with the switch and switch back to using Google. If Apple dropped Google all together I am sure they would spark major controversy and resentment, something Apple does not want, especially since their brand perception is their biggest selling feature.

I personally don't think they will make Bing the default and I highly doubt they would drop Google. As long as they don't drop Google I don't care.

Hey you reactionary yahwhos, you already have a choice of search engine on the iPhone (albeit with a limited choice set of Google and Yahoo) - if it was changed to Bing, just change your phone back to Google. Problem solved.

Say it ain't so!

I am mortified by the thought of Microsoft having anything to do with the iPhone or Safari. The very suggestion is bad enough.

Apple do not even think about it. Remember who the real enemy is.

Not only will I not use Bing on my phone, (I already don't use Yahoo since Microsoft took over), if Safari starts using Bing I will move to Firefox and drag my friends with me away from Safari.

Frustrated Machead. :mad::apple:

Quick comparison between the two on the iPhone. Went to google.com and bing.com and got these results. ...
My search engine test is to search on my name. In the early days of BING, I got relatively few hits on my name. Google got many more unique hits. In preparation for this post, I BINGed myself. I must admit that BING has improved. However, there is no comparison. When I Googled myself, Google had everything that BING found plus much, much more. I have to seriously question the judgment of anyone who claims that BING is even in the same league as Google.

BusinessWeek is a reputable publication and all. However, I have to seriously question this story. Apple is going to switch from Google to Microsoft because Google is entering the phone business while Microsoft has been in the phone business for ages? The story makes no sense. If Apple is switching to Microsoft, then it must be for other reasons and big ones at that. Perhaps Apple is going to sell some search technology to Microsoft. Perhaps, Microsoft will pay Apple a buttload of money to use BING. However, I don't think that either one of these could seal the deal. Perhaps, Bill Gates has agreed to do yard work at Steve Jobs' place.
