Can't be any worse than the current Safari performance...

I downloaded Edge and ran a couple of browser benchmarks using my 2018 MacBook Pro 2.2Ghz 6-core. I'm running Mac OS 10.15.2. I also tested the latest version of Firefox. Edge isn't as performant as Safari, but it's close! Firefox lags far behind both.

JetStream 2: (https://browserbench.org/JetStream/)
Safari 137.875 *edit 2nd: 145.128
Edge 132.787 *edit 2nd: 136.070
Firefox 87.818

Speedometer 2: (https://browserbench.org/Speedometer2.0/)
Safari 127
Edge 111
Firefox 62.3

Next I loaded up imgur.com, all three browsers loaded it quickly, but only Safari scrolled in a buttery smooth, perfectly quick and responsive way using the trackpad. Edge and Firefox both scrolled in a jerky way using the trackpad. Using a mouse scroll wheel, it's hard to tell the 3 browsers apart. Since I often use my trackpad, Safari "feels" way, way better than Firefox or Edge whenever I scroll.

Nice... But I'll stay with Firefox, it's by far the better browser IMO. Features like Container Tabs are unparalleled for privacy, and at the same time offering the ability to log into multiple O365 tenants at the same time which is handy in work. Of course I block all the adds and trackers I can.

Is there anything special, apart from opening a new tab, to be able to do this? I usually have to switch to a different browser to be logged into two different O365 users at the same time. If FF can do this in each tab, that'd be awesome!

You people slay me. Bottom line is if you are on the internet, your life is exposed. Thinking anything else is foolish.

This is truly lowest common denominator type thinking. Oh... and you're wrong also. You're really on a roll.

People who actually know how to use a computer can have complete privacy. Stop being a passenger at your computer, and be a driver instead.

Some of y'all can't be for real. What's next, firing someone for having a gmail account?

Indeed. The idea of sysadmins blocking Microsoft products, something the majority of world runs on, whilst saying "The reasons is far too complex for you to understand!" is a tad ridiculous. But this is an internet forum, where everyone is the King in their own head.

TLDR: If you were excited to download this for the sole purpose of finally getting decent 1080p or even 4K Netflix playback on your older Mac, don't bother. As far as I can tell this does not support 1080p on Mac systems at this point.

Was hoping they implemented at least 1080p Netflix playback on Mac (for those who don't know, older Macs "can't" play Netflix above 720p anymore due to a Safari update years back - doesn't matter if they are absolutely capable of doing so, there isn't a single browser that supports it, and the one remaining plugin I can find that does actually force 1080p does so at the lowest possible 1080p bitrate, so it's still very poor quality). Anyway, unless someone can confirm a method to enable 1080p playback in this browser on Macs don't bother downloading it.

Awesome. I really don't like Chrome. I need a second browser to pair with Safari.

EDIT: Ok, that excitement didn't last long. It copied one of the things I hated the most about Chrome. Is it too much to ask to actually have a header bar for the window so it's easy for me to drag my windows around?

I am not even kidding but an IT guy once told me connecting to music streaming services is considered as DDoS.

I like that example. There's plenty of smart people saying stupid things. I heard a story recently about someone thinking a WiFi password is covered under GDPR. Probably said by someone who doesn't know what GDPR stands for.

Again... lowest common denominator type thinking keeps rearing its head here.

Just because people choose Windows as their OS doesn't mean that everything Microsoft makes is suddenly good. Try to see past the tip of your nose.

I am trying to count the number of F...s being given about a new Microsoft browser but so far I keep finding zero.
Anyone else has the same issue?

You should always be happy when competition to Apple (or your chosen company) makes progress because it pushes the industry along. When you don't have competing browsers you end up with the old Internet Explorer issue where the industry can't move forward. This is a good thing for the industry. Same with Visual Studio Code - massive step forward that really pushes development tools forward.

Can you imagine this HR talk? "We are calling this meeting for a major security violation on your part."

"What'd I do?"

"You checked your private gmail email on your phone at work!"

"Ok and?"

"You also opened a Microsoft Office docx file."

"Ok and?"

"YOU'RE FIRED!"

This cannot be for real.

Nobody said they were all good. There's plenty of terrible Microsoft products (SharePoint, Skype are two of the worst currently). Equally, it doesn't mean they're all bad.

So with that in mind, are you going to explain the instant block on a new Microsoft product? And what other browsers have you blocked and why? Or it it too hard to explain? Or does everything boil down to "lowest common denominator"? A phrase which makes no sense in the current context?

I'm not the one who blocked anything. You're very confused.

Microsoft's aim with the Edge browser is to provide better web compatibility with improved performance for customers while also making sure there's less fragmentation of the web for developers

Oh but we liked building websites in the past that never worked properly in all browsers. That was all the fun...building a page that broke in one browser or another and troubleshooting a workaround all day long trying to make it work.

Everyone is going to jump on this and say it's terrible because it's Microsoft and because Edge (and IE) are terrible. But this is actually good - really good. It's all the benefits of Chrome, but without the Google having your data worries.

If you want to go further down the 'Chrome but privacy' route, then Brave browser takes it a step further. That's Chromium but with a big privacy focus. I've been using it recently (coupled with DuckDuckGo) and it's really good.

When I moved to macOS from Windows about 3 months ago, Safari was my biggest disappointment. Edge and Brave are really good replacements.

I was a fan of Edge prior to the switch to it being Chrome based, but this was a few years ago when I ran a Windows 10 gaming PC. Now I'm on Safari with my Mac, and I like Safari like 90% of the time... Until I get to a website it just won't load. Firefox has been my go to in that instance, but I am willing to give Edge a try again. Edge is no way an Internet Explorer, and I am thankful for that! lol. I think I will try Edge for a bit, I'm not a fan of Windows, but the latest update to 10 has been great and the Microsoft Surface is almost as beautiful as a Mac. No Microsoft hate here anymore. When I updated to Windows 8 I basically went to Linux Mint until I bought a crappy prebuilt gaming rig with 10 on it. Even then, I still had Mint on my laptop.

Just FYI, this uses Webkit. Same rendering engine as Safari. And it's based on Chromium, which is what Chrome and Brave are built on. It's also open source. So if you're worried about hacking and security issues then you're in for a surprise with the products you currently use.

The Linus quote is so long ago it pre-dates a few CEO changes. Steve Jobs also said that if you see a stylus they blew it. But we don't whip that one out on Apple forums. Almost like circumstances change.

The stylus thing is still different too. It really never was hat styluses are bad inherently. The problem was when you needed one to use the device. Now the Apple Pencil is simply an option to use in the few cases where a stylus really makes sense or if you just want it, but I can still buy an iPad today and use it without ever needing the pencil/stylus. My finger is still the primary interface as Steve intended. I don’t think Steve would have had any problem with the pencil (other than that idiotic charging scheme of the first gen)

I'm using Ghostery Lite and it works great in Safari. It’s free.
I wrote a super simple ad blocker specifically to block Facebook but it also blocks over 3k ad sites. Open source, all swift.
