When I first saw the commercial, I thought, wow...that was pointless. Then I came here and it all clicked...the ad is a success. Over 300 posts...they definitely got people to talk about microsoft, myself included. Dammit!

No way. The average person doesn't care about MS/Apple as we all do. They just watch this commercial and think: "hey, it's that comedy guy. And he obviously know about shoes. Let's go to shoe circus tomorrow. What's up with the ending? Nevermind... Oooh! Next commercial is McDonalds. Hmmm I'm hungry."

I think I figured it out

I too was dealing with the WTF factor. Then I realized that there are almost 400 posts in this forum alone talking about this commercial in just a couple of hours. So maybe the ad really is effective if it gets everyone around the watercooler talking tomorrow about what the hell the weird Seinfeld commercial was the night before. I know I found myself sending the link to the Youtube video within minutes to all my friends asking them if they got it. As the ad campaign builds, maybe they will make more sense.

heres the question like others have touched up on it. This commercial is dumb but now we have 13 pages so far talking about and will spread Forum to Forum.

Is it doing what it was really meant to do?

wow, interesting how some dudes say BG did ok. I thought he was lifeless, like his operating systems. Except when he just made faces at JS. Kinda like windoes: it looks cool until you actually use it.

Who knows, maybe that was the intent, but if so I would say they failed there too. Heh.

I felt they were trying too hard to be random. It felt forced and awkward.

It took 3 or 4 viewings until i finally had an idea of where the ad may be going. It had too much going on in it.

I also think it was a bit forced aswell, it doesn't help when you have a non-actor and a limited script/not very good writers it may get better with future ads.

Wow.
I sat down to check this site, just before the Jimmy Kimmel Show.
As the home page was loading and I saw the image of Jerry & Bill... the commercial aired.

Wow.
Ok, maaaaaybe as the campaign progresses, this 1st one will eventually make sense. But as a one-off... wow. Bad.

We'll see.

Taster's Choice

Remember those Taster's Choice ads in the '90s (?) w/ the man and woman who discover their shared interest in good coffee and eventually discover each other and fall in love?

Does that mean Jerry and Bill are gay? Not that there's anything wrong w/ that. :D

We do see their butts wiggling as a closer. ;)

We live in deeply strange times...

The only way I can interpret the commercial is by thinking Jerry is the Mac, and Bill is the PC, in which Jerry makes a fool of himself with his stupid ideas. I guess that's sort of valid, considering Apple has had some ideas that didn't sit so well with Mactards. Stacks, MacBook Air, Translucent bar, 3D dock, etc.

But I'm a Hodgman fan, anyway.

Also, Macshill wins post of the day.

Best,
Jason

This commercial is dumb... Had I not known who Bill Gates was, I wouldn't know what they're trying to sell. Very ineffective.

Oh and Bill Gates not being allowed to shop at a discount shoe store reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Joe DiMaggio isn't allowed to eat at Dinky Donuts :)

Well, I see this ad as an introduction to the series. A small, funny step to introduce the characters (Gates, Seinfeld) and make folks love 'em. That's basically why it did not include any promotion.

Expect to see more product related ads in the future.

Feel sorry for MS engineers

I just feel bad to those hard working engineers in Redmond who need to walk into MS building tomorrow morning.

Why marketing and BG agree to spend this money for this ads?

I don't see a good foundation for this $10 millions.

Time to start a new FAIL thread here at mac rumors.:)

I wonder what the microsoft fan boys are saying about this add?
Might be worth a good chuckle to head over to a microsoft fan site, and read some posts

I've seen worse ads, even worse Microsoft ads, but this one doesn't make me want anything from them, which is good. :p

Too subtle

I'm willing to be persuaded that this is the opening act in a low key campaign, but I'll have to see more to really go along. Each Apple ad can stand alone though they do support each other over time. Perhaps it will become obvious later but I don't see how this supports MS. Weird stuff about shoes. Showering with your clothes on. Bill shopping for discount shoes. Microsoft building computers. They don't make computers now (unless you count xbox and zune). Are they planning to start?

What is with that comment about the hordes of wonderfully smart people in Redmond? I don't doubt there are but the ad should somehow tie that in to something. They just lay it out there like people will accept it but it begs the question, 'If those guys are so smart how come Vista sucks so bad you had to make this commercial?'.
