Heh

I heard this last night from the other room (I was ummm indisposed), and thought that this sounded like another Jerry Seinfield Amex commercial, especially the part about the platinum card. It wasn't until this morning after watching it that I got it was MS's latest media blitz.

Fail!

If there is one good thing about this ad, is that it humanizes Microsoft in a way. It seems to make the large, monstrosity, number-driven, cold company into more of a friendly face. Bill seems so accessible, and so then Microsoft becomes more accessible.

If nothing else, I walked away thinking Microsoft was a little bit less EVIL. The ads following this will continue this trend, no doubt.

Also, does it make the Apple Ads seem slightly mean? Like they're picking on ol' Bill. You know, the guy who "adjusted his shorts" for the churro eating Jerry Seinfeld?

Just thought I would offer a contrary viewpoint. ;)

Wow, that was incredibly bad. Micro$oft has 90 quadrillion dollars and they can't hire someone to make them a decent add?

I can just picture the dopes at the MS board meeting that thought that add was a real knee slapper.

Maybe they hired the same folks that put on the republiscum convention. Great stuff...

Why does everything have to harken back to politics? I do not care what your affiliation is - nor do most people here. The prevailing opinion is that Mac users are goofy, wacky left-wing nut-bags and your silly comments do nothing to dispel that. As shallow as it may be there are people who dislike Apple et all and Mac users as a result of this behavior and the Holier than Though attitude (which, by the way, is prevalent on both sides of the Mac/PC debate - and both sides have merit). Politics had NOTHING to do with this ad and this ad had nothing to do with the election... I do not wish to engage in a political debate with you are we are most likely not that far apart - but please knock-off the name calling as is does more harm than good. It turns people off.

As for the commercial? I thought it was funny - kind-of. I saw it late last night while review a new audio piece for my day job. I had the browser open and a review in process - only to stop, rewind the commercial and watch it twice. I though Bill Gates did a wonderful job and Jerry was funny and wacky and had no substance (isn't that what he is famous for?) and I thought it was unique. I am not sure it will sell Vista or PC's - but it was entertaining - even though a bit odd.

Does anyone remember the iPod commercials with nothing but silhouettes of people dancing and psychedelic colors flowing around and throughout the screen? What did that tell you about Apple, the iPod or iTunes? It did nothing but introduce otherwise unknown (for the most part) musicians to the public and show how hip it is to own an iPod. It had no substance - yet it sold millions of iPods.

If it has anything to do with Windows and Bill Gates most people on this forum will shoot it down on principle and that is a shame.

D

So bad..
They wanna revamp microsoft? This ad doesn't say anything about microsoft..

It was ****, what a monumental waste of $10 million, I could think of a lot better uses for that money.

just the tip

I'm no lover of microsoft, but this commercial is not about vista or any product yet. It's setting the stage for the campaign. It's about turning heads and getting people to talk about it. lot of posts on this topic.... Similar to Bud light and miller light sniping each other like in the referee commercials. The mac commercials feature a bill gates like person and this ad's intention is to make that stereotype seem less like i'm so much cooler than a tech support guy and rather playing off the walking a mile in someone's shoes, the Conquistador...which run tight.

And after all that you're still stuck with a crappy mojave vista SP 47...

What's that trusty powerbook running tiger? you've been running and sleeping for 37 straight days while connected to the internet, airtunes and apple tv with no problems? I promise to let you rest when they release smaller laptops again.

1. Seinfeld has ZERO relevance to generation "now." Not saying I don't like him. TBS and other channels still run the show but this campaign is not going to cause a Mac user to switch and that ad really doesn't do anything to sell the product. If this is an image-only campaign, then MS knows this. Unless they're trying to make their current user base feel better about using Windows..."See, we're fun too!" (Not to be confused with WTF?)

2. Image improvement? Maybe. But to win at that game they've got a lot of ground to make up. Apple has always had a decent lead over MS in that department. Apple has been the desired computer but it always had the appearance of being too expensive. However, once you win the consumers' purchase, user experience is all that matters. MS doesn't do very well in that department.

3. I'm a Mac/I'm a PC campaign sells consumer benefit of a Mac in concise, entertaining, hip, and to the point segments. One spot. One thing. MS takes a full :59.5 seconds to tell me I should be buying discount shoes. At best, MS is going to create a series of ads that will eventually lead up to buying a new OS. I don't care about your product enough to follow a plot. I don't have time for that or to decipher what it is that you're trying to tell me.

4. Is MS going to go all the way and make Jerry a switcher? Since every episode of Seinfeld has a Mac on Jerry's desk, they'll be pretty busy with that.

5. If MS starts using life-size cutouts of JS for in store promotion and you are able to snag one, PM me. I'll give you $100 bucks for it!

Microsoft is selling shoes and bread sticks in malls?

MS & Seinfeld

My wife and I saw this last night. We were speechless. This has to be one of the worst ads that we have ever seen. Truly sad.

I don't get it...honestly.

I thought maybe the "tight shoes" was a shot at the "limited options" Mac and OS X offer - "one size must fit all" - and Seinfeld gets him a different size that fits better, but they don't execute on it.

The rest of the ad made no sense, either. How it ties into buying Windows or not buying Mac is beyond me...

Sorry, childish I know, but I couldn't help myself here...

Cue PC & Mac standing at a tall meeting table with a bowl of Apples on

Mac
Hello I'm a mac.
PC (standing in Gates Conquistador shoes)
and I'm a PC.
Mac
Say, PC, I just saw your new commercial, nice shoes.
PC (Proud)
Yes, we've finally managed to produce something that is virus-free and just works.
Mac
Shoes?
PC
These aren't just shoes, these are Microsoft Conquistador 2008 Ultimate shoes.
Mac
Oh?
PC
With these shoes you can go anywhere, think "where do you want to go to today?" and these shoes you can get there.
NO need for an internet connection, you don't even need a computer.
Mac
But what about Vista?
PC
Well we hoped users would get the message, you see Atari showed us that the desert is the best place for redundant software and well, we hoped people might get the hint with the Mojave project.
PC
But with these babies...

(PC starts stomping during which the laces start to fall out)
...you can can go anywhere,do anything.
(PC Stands still realising he has no laces left)

PC
Of course, there might still be some compatibility issues, people with different feet configurations and all... ...we'll have them sorted in the first service pack.

PC, looking deflated, picks up an Apple fom the bowl, takes a bite and starts to walk off set...

PC
Say, these are delicious.

Cut to Apple logo.

Sadie.

Brilliant! Pitch that to Apple! :)

What.

If I was computer illiterate, I would have no idea what that ad was about. (Well, maybe I would. But "shoes" would be in my mind, not "Windows Vista".)

Reuters: " Microsoft said the commercial is part of a broader, long-term initiative to change consumers' perception of Windows, which will include setting up a retail corner at several hundred Best Buy... and Circuit City... stores staffed by "Windows Gurus" to explain the benefits of Windows."

I can't think of a more horrifying job than being a Microsoft Guru at a big box store...

"Yes ma'am, your grand son is right, you do have a virus and a bunch of spyware. You will have to buy a new copy of Vista and install it because there is no other cure... Yes ma'am, it goes in the CD tray... by the way, ma'am, your computer is too old to install vista on it the way it is now. You'll have to upgrade the Ram and the video card, and maybe the processor... No Ma'am, I'm not kidding. OWWWW. You didn't have to slam your computer down on my hand, Ma'am!"

Commercial is as bad as the product!!

Awesome - it's as crappy as the OS and just as incomprehensible!!
