I think the spot is brilliant. It's unassuming and fun, you don't need to put a product on tv for it to sell. Look at this site 600 plus comments and still going. I think it is doing what it intended to to. Have people talk about Microsoft. You all fell right in to their trap, lol.

Very interesting point, and yet the best one so far in the whole damn thread.

I would have thought this was an American Express ad if it were not for the last 3 seconds of the commercial.

Eventually, you'll figure out that you are being tricked into watching a series of ads because it's like a TV show you wish was still on TV, only this time in short bursts and in HD. But you'll keep watching the show because you want to see what doesn't happen next.

The same way MS tricked us into buying windows in the first place?

Lets compare this to other attempts to change images of something. You just can't push a bunch of ads on TV claiming you're great, while still treating your customers poorly. Its like ATT Wireless - 100 ads claiming you have better service is easily trumpted by 1 dropped call or 1 "experience" calling or visiting a ATT customer care center.

You can convince people of something with advertising as long as their own experiences don't undermine the message.

Microsoft Guru at Best Buy store scene II

"... OK, girls it was nice to meet you too. Are you guys really 18? You're sure? OK here is the address to the party. It will be lots of fun... There will be lots of beer!... bye bye!"

"next customer?...."

"Yes sir, I understand that you were on the phone with Dell for an hour and that they said it was a problem with Windows. I know you are frustrated. I'm sorry microsoft kept you on the phone for a half-hour just to suggest you bring it here. But, I just can't help you. Did you try to call the manufacturer of the video card? I bet the problem can be solved by them. Their number? I have no idea, maybe you can find it on the web. Is there another computer that you can use to do that? OOWWWW. Sir, that was my foot you just stomped on!"

I chuckled a few times...I love Jerry...But this is the wrong direction for microsoft. They need to just keep marketing toward that old unhip business crowd. They are not cool and never will be.

I don't think they're trying to be hip. Whenever they try, they fail, and they may be starting to get that. The whole "let's hire Seinfeld so we can be perceived as being hip" thing was the presumption of the Mac crowd.

i watched it again the second time and it isn't too bad as the first time. it's still mediocre. and i guess the commercial makes sense in that way.

Mediocresoft.

The Future.

i showed it to a co-worker and she said, "Oh g*d, it's like a credit card commercial."

how poignant.

And then there are those called the CRITICS... Hence... 600 post later, the criticism seems to depict a failed attempt to be drawn into the idea of liking Microsoft.

And by tonight it'll be the second most talked about - perhaps the most talked about - current topic on this site. An Apple fan site.

Think about it.

Ha, this Macrumors article has the most negative votes that I've ever seen... and well deserved.

wow

Just… wow. That ad was, uhm, LAME!! If I hadn't read about these ads beforehand, I wouldn't have known it was for Microsoft/Vista until the last 2 seconds. Even then, there is no mention of Vista, which is probably best, since Vista is a major dud anyway.
And what is MS trying to say? That they're working on making computers edible? How incredibly stupid. Poor ad IMHO.

My first thought was that things are so bad at Microsoft that Gates had taken a job in a shoe shop rather than work there.

Easy Cowboy... McCain is a mac guy. So is Obama. Decisions decisions...

How is McCain a Mac guy? He has been quoted as saying he doesn't even know how to use a computer, let alone how to get on "the Internets?"

If people are debating/praising/slamming the ad, they don't have as much time to slam Vista :p

A win for Microsoft in my book.

New Microsoft Ad

How Dumb. What kind of rise were they looking for in this AD. The problem with using un-trained actors is they make the commercial sound bland. Well then again Bill Gates is a trained actor. He's been acting like is products are actually good. In any case the commercial was Dumb.

It was an ad showing that they don't have to bash Apple to get attention, or to try to convince people that their product is better. Making Bill look like more of an ordinary person than the monstor that he has been made out to be. It just placed Microsoft in the minds of people in a very gentle way. Nothing more, nothing less.

microsoft advert

-that was by far the worst commercial i have ever seen. not to mention a horrible attempt at humor.

-i have never been into seinfeld and this makes me proud to own apple products. they paid him 10 million for this campaign which they should have spent making better products. what a joke. i could have done better.

-the only microsoft product i will ever endorse is the xbox 360, and maybe a mouse.

-this does not make me feel like i want a PC at all. i don't even want to ever buy shoes again.

-apple adverts are 100 times better. they suckered me to buy an iphone that has so many issues, yet i seem not to care and still love it.

-nice try gates. go away sienfeld.

And by tonight it'll be the second most talked about - perhaps the most talked about - current topic on this site. An Apple fan site.

Think about it.

I have thought about it. The point still remains: A crappy ad is still . . . guess what, a crappy ad! I think there are many people on this site (even though it is a Mac site) who would have loved to see something creative, fun and interesting in these ads, regardless of who it's for. Personally, I would have loved to see the Apple get a run for its money in the advertising world. I think everyone was excited about a series of ads featuring Jerry and Bill. Something to have fun with. But in the end, it still sucked.

As the old adage goes, "Garbage in, garbage out."

My first thoughts right after the commercial where:

"Seinfeld, you dog. You just made ten million dollars for that?!"

"That wasn't even funny."

" 'The Future… Delicious'........ how more vague can they be?"

"WTF was the commercial even about?"

After having a few minutes to mull over… same conclusions actually. Now if it's a SERIES of ads, it's at least supposed to be funny AND to make the viewer curious about this "delicious future" they're talking about. Because, as the commercials keep coming, we'll get more and more of the picture.

But this just wasn't funny. Big Top Shoes (not funny). Showering in your Shoes (not funny). Offering Bill some of your already chewed-on food (still not funny).

What WAS funny was seeing Bill Gates "act" and you could tell that Jerry had coached him on all his lines. All of them. And yet Bill was NOT even close to funny.

Terrible ad.

And we all know where this is going… to one of the of the most tired lines ever: "The Future is Now" as in "The Future is Now: Vista."

All I have to say is: the cake is a lie.

Don't be so sure. All Apple has to do is announce that it will be in a future release, and Microsoft will roll it out within 9 months. This could actually be a great counterintelligence strategy for Apple.
