At least it got us lot talking about it.... goal 1 achieved. ;)

But.. really.. WTF was that about..?

Does Bill think he alone is so interesting that posing him as a friendly down-to-earth guy makes you buy more M$ products???
And he needed a very funny fossil to help him? And everyone knows by now that Seinfeld was a Mac guy, but hard cash won him over... hmm....

Typical M$ strategy: if you can't beat 'em: buy 'em.

Yuck.

what the hell did that have to do with windows? Thats all i have to say....
Why is it that everyone and his brother thinks this is supposed to be an ad for Vista or Windows in general? It's a profile ad, it has nothing to do with any particular product. And Microsoft isn't all about Windows. They make office software, games, consoles, mice, keyboards and a bunch of other stuff.

They're trying to change the perception of the brand. They're known as a company who take themselves a little too seriously, and for a founder and ex-CEO who is a scrawny nerd with zero charisma. This in contrast to Steve Jobs who is a great evangelist, can captivate an audience and is funny on occasion, and Apple also use a lot of humor in their ads.

This ad is a hell of a lot more clever than it will get credit for (some in this thread have managed to decipher the message though), but naturally everyone's going to hate it on this forum... it's like showing an Obama ad at the Republican convention.

You just said it right there!!!

Thats why he represents Apple!
Exactly. Gates has the future up his sleeve and the obnoxious 90's has-been wants a sneak peek.

The message will probably be a lot clearer a few episodes down the line, but for this first one I think they wanted to be a little cryptic and make people scratch their heads wondering wtf that was. Mission accomplished, apparently.

I just watched it again, and I have to say it just gets better every time. You have two of the richest men of their profession, shopping at a discount shoe store. I love it. If you don't get well then, watch it again until you do.

With one exception, Jerry Seinfeld was not actually shopping there. He entered the discount shoe store after noticing BG inside. He did, however, seem to be fairly knowledgeable about their line of shoes.

The size of this thread is a tribute to how successful this ad series has been so far.

This was an amazing ad. It did it's job. I now totally wanna go to the Shoe Circus...oh. It was a Microsoft ad? What the hell?

Just watched the ad for the first time.
Boy, is this sad. Never seen an advert that sad in my life.

Worst
Ad
Ever?

Seinfeld reminds me of the mid 1990s. Kinda like Microsoft...

Exactly what I was thinking... I laughed so hard at this attempt, not because it was funny but because it was bad. Poor bill really doesn't get it.

Too Uncomfortable to watch...

Wow, I think it is great that Microsoft is waking up and trying to infuse Mojo into their monolithic organization. But as a creative director at an advertising agency, I find this first debut to be highly ineffective. OK so it was trying to be playful and show case Bill with self depreciating humor, but the lack of chemistry is painful to watch.

Hey Microsoft, if you are listening, you deserve better creative representation than what has been displayed in the first series of ads. If we are going to have to endure $300,000,000 worth of this stuff, then I think I am going to be sick.

I don't think MS noticed that Jerry was an Apple guy.

What would be even funnier is that if Apple used Jerry in their own "Get a Mac" ads, airing only one week later.

So Funny. Not the ad. The attempt.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Microsoft does it again. Pumps loads of $$$ into something that is just dull. Come on. Seinfeld on board and that's all you can come up with?

Let's face it, they spend years on Vista and Windows is still terrible so why would anyone expect this to be any different?

I think it's a terrific ad, and much better promotion for Microsoft than the stupid "Windows Mojave" spot.

Of course it wasn't Seinfeld standing there extolling the virtues of Windows. Now that would have been lame.

Dancing iPod ads were abstract, but great at building image.

That MS ad was also abstract, but just plain sucked.
What part of the dancing iPod stuff was abstract...? A dark dancing silhouette with the signature white iPod headphones on. Yeah, I'm sure those ads generated marathon threads where people were desperately trying to decipher the many layers of hidden messages...

I agree, this Ad does leave alot of questions, however it has succeeded in it's primary goal... to get your attention.

For all those people out there who dislike this Ad, how many of you will still watch the 2nd Ad when it comes out? Gates is still a big draw and a major player in the land of fame.

I dare say most of us will click, discuss, dissect and examine the next Ad. In which case, the campaign is working.

Wow, I read the first 10 pages then couldn't handle everyone's copy of WTF anymore.

For not being a very good commercial according to most posts, it sure has everyone talking about it.

I think Arn's was the first reasonable post I read. I personally haven't laughed/chuckled so hard at a commercial spot for a long time.
The directing, dialogue, filming, and acting were all superb. Microsoft sold Microsoft just fine in that commercial without any stupid gimmicks - well except for perhaps the churro. ;)
