dude, the worst get a mac commercials is better then this, and shorter...

they need to hire a new ad agency like apple or something...

shoes....everyone needs shoes, but not everyone need a pc..

To be honest I think it would be better for microsoft to do lots of shorter ads, lasting only a few seconds each, rather than this long one. If people saw lots of short ads they would have them in their heads all the time, especially if MS played a catchy tune alongside.

Then again, this ad isn't too bad, but it's not exactly great.

Microsoft tries to explain Seinfeld ad

how bad is your ad when you have to issue a press release because no one gets it?

less money for r&d to actually improve products instead of selling them

From that article, look at this:

That article said:
Microsoft plans to hire 155 "gurus" by the end of the year to work in Circuit City, Best Buy and other retailers to help customers

So Microsoft have Geniuses... Uhh... I mean Gurus now!

The ad was made by Crispin Porter + Bogusky, the hottest ad agency on the planet.
Mm-hm. They're like any other agency: some successes, some failures. Creative advertising is great to watch but unpredictable in its outcome. The same goes for Apple, BTW. They need to be careful, too.

But to repeat what I said earlier: great ad, I hope to see more.

Lots of dumb comments on this thread. Take a chill pill, people. Just enjoy it. It's OKAY TO ENJOY THE AD EVEN THOUGH IT HAS BILL GATES IN IT. YEAH REALLY.

EDIT: My fear is that Apple will react to MS - or rather, someone at Chiat/Day will flinch and try to out-do CPB, the agency that C/D was in the '90s: 'hot' (whatever the hell that means). But Jobs is for the long-term.

Wow. More than a thousand replys...

It's incredible to see the amount of bad advice given by people in this thread.
"The logo isn't visible for long enough"... "They should have made a lot af short ads instead of this long one"... "They don't even mention Vista". etc. etc.

You don't know what they are trying to achieve. You don't know anything about the campaign - apart from having seen this first ad.

My piece of advice for all of you: Wait. Have patience. Let's play judges when we know what to judge.

(Yes, I'm an ad industry professional. Yes, I both use and prefer Macs.)

Perhaps they're trying to go for the same sort of "wtfness" that the original Macintosh ad came out with... ;)

Honestly though, I think the attempt was to bring some more light to Microsoft, make them appear more "down to earth" and "real." Of course Bill Gates wouldn't be shopping in shoe circus, but it was designed to make him seem more of a real person than just some rich guy with glasses. His little butt shake at the end could have been an attempt to show that he can be a fun guy. Will we see Steve Jobs shake his behind in a Mac commercial? Nah, because that's the making of a dumb commercial.

Regardless, I thought it was a lame commercial. I'm with the people who believe that this is one in a series of commercials where Seinfeld becomes closer friends with Bill Gates and through comic situations reveals a friendlier more inviting Microsoft.

In reality, there is no friendly or inviting side to Micro$oft.

The commercial was brilliant. The ad agency behind it (Crispin Porter + Bogusky) is one of the top agencies in the country and have really opened the door to a great and memorable ad campaign. Alex Bogusky is a genius in the ad world.

It's comfortable, entertaining, funny, and makes the Microsoft brand seem the "normal guy" instead of a trendy / hip thing (by subtly being trendy and hip in its portrayal of the "normal guy / everyman"). It's the antithesis to Apple's campaign. I love it.

Besides everyone here being apple fanatics, the other reason you don't "get it" or think it's "lame" is because it's not aimed at you. Most people here are apple fanatics and would fall on the sword for the brand. So most discussion will reflect that bias.

I don't see how "you've mind melding your magnum Jupiter brain to those other Saturn ringed brains at Microsoft" could be construed as "normal guy/everyman".... fanboy or not.

I love Seinfeld, and reruns of his show are a staple of mine. But this ad is a bore, and is so uninteresting. Personally, I think this ad would more likely drive people away from Microsoft, than toward Microsoft.

My bet is the sole purpose was to illicit thousands of responses from Mac people so they can read all the suggestions to try and find what they should do.

hm seems some of u are pretty pissed off by the add.

i've never seen a 1000 post discussion about a mac add on a windows forum :D

wrongo

so bill gates adjusts his jocks and shakes his arse and the next thing the voice over says 'delicious'? WRONGO!! Yuk! Puke! an almost 60 year old greiatric's arse is covered with an adult nappie. what were they thinking? Maybe they haired Jerry to write this and Jerry's secretly sabotaging the whole thing!

If in fact you are an "INdustry Professional" you understand the importance of listening to the people you are trying to impress with your ad campaign, and if nobody "gets" your message" then it doesn't work no matter what is loaded down the pipe.
Also one thing I would like to point out is the ad was designed for "Mac" users, and it just doesnt work. Its lame and its desperate, not too far off from what MS has always done.

trust me, if an ad agency listened to the competitors condescending fans advice, it would be a very strange representation for their client. just listen to the above posters advice, and show some patience of what this campaign has more to offer - because if the agency listened to the masses, youd get something simplistic, dumbed down and low road as the "i'm a mac" ads. but im beginning to think this is all my fellow apple users understand...

and what you enjoy pointing out is just something you made up ("designed for "Mac" users").

OMG, i made a mistake! MR users don't need a week, to go up to 1500 post... they will do this in a couple of days.

So, that means, the ad was efficient.

Would it also be a fact if....

i have to disagree. there has been no Vista Bashing for the sake of bashing. everything they have brought up in the 'get a mac' ads is simply a point of fact. a fact that is a negative yes, but a fact all the same. just like all the pluses they bring up about Macs are also facts.

Would it also be a fact if Microsoft created a campaign highlighting all of the bad "facts" about OSX 10.4.0?

Most of the criticisms of Vista in the Apple ads are either dated (referring to Vista migration issues that were "facts" for some people nearly two years ago) or serious mis-representations (the "I've been error-free for 7 days...I've been error-free for 7 days...I've been error-free for 7 days.." ad comes to mind here.)

Don't rely on Apple for your Vista facts.

Give them time. This is the first ad. Crispin is a very good agency. Their strategy is probably tremendously deep. Just give it time.

I actually think it's a nice spot.

As far as the strategy goes, don't forget that Windows 7 will be here next year - and don't forget that Microsoft is saying that Windows 7 will have the same hardware requirements as Vista.

Take a few cues from the Mojave Experiment, add in Windows 7, and I'd bet that you'll see where this campaign will be going.

Come on now, that's reading into the ad way too much when you do that...

Why do I have a feeling if Steve Jobs was in this commercial I'd be hearing the opposite?

no, you would be hearing the exact same thing.

because it is not about Bill or Steve, it is about the ad being stupid. about it having nothing to do with anything much less computers and Windows and about how the average person is going to gain nothing from it in regards to using a computer. probably won't even notice the windows icon in the corner

First of all Bill Gates is a BAD ACTOR.
. . . blah, blah, blah. .

hey, if you were that rich, you could be whatever the hell you wanted.
good actor, bad actor, someone who squanders millions of dollars on commercials about nothing.

wheeeeee!

[edit]
i also like it when bill shakes his butt. oh, the joys of silliness!
and 0:17 at first glance, i was like, jobsy? no, just a bald man wearing a black shirt. i think they did that on purpose. lol, only had the guy been wearing jeans. oh, creativity abounds at microsoft!
