You're assuming that "awareness" means more sales.

No. I mean 'awareness' as in 'awareness of brand'.

Why is it appropriate to make that assumption? What if more people are "aware" of problems with Windows?

The point of the adverts will be to show that there aren't really the problems that Vista had anymore.

I don't see why awareness = success. It seems to me, more sales = success. It's a fairly simple concept.

Because if you automatically think it's crap you won't buy it. If you become aware of something you're more inclined to try it and then make your own mind up rather than relying on Joe McBlog for your opinions. Microsoft have lain down and had the crap kicked out of them - and quite justifiably for the first year - now it's time to raise the profile again.

I said earlier there are two stages of advertising:

1) Make them aware of it
2) Make them want it

This advert was part of stage 1 and succeeded pretty well. Hell, very well - half the net is talking about it.

Simple concept.

Actually it's not. If you talk about an ad that is about increasing awareness then it's succeeded. It's a fairly simple concept.

Well, here's an example:

• Carphone Warehouse sponsor Big Brother.

• Contestant makes racist remarks about another contestant.

• Massive publicity.

• Carphone Warehouse cancel contract early, stop sponsoring the show and run for the hills.

"All publicity is good publicity" is not correct.

New Coke anyone?

Looking at so many people flaming about the "worst ad ever," thought crossed my mind that the ad might have already started working. After all we are all talking about it here.

It's not that it is bad publicity, but it's better than nothing.

Frankly, I'm getting more annoyed by the on-line Vista/Mojave ads. Those are totally pointless.

Boring Commercial

I mean I think a high-school kid using Imovie, could of created a better commercial. This was boring, and would turn me off completly from windows. Jerry seinfeld definitely did not help :D

And you were all ready to go out and buy Windows until you saw it, right?

YEP so my computer could crash, and I could get no work done! I guess thoose are feature enhancements.

It was funny last year how microsoft listed on their exchange page, how one of the features was viruses before they took it off.

Anyway, I think I'm more productive on my mac. Thank You!:D

So Vista is like a bad pair of shoes that someone is trying to hardsell you and you try to stretch and break them in but in the end they just aren't your size?

And the solution is to go get another pair of shoes. Umm.

I like it.

It's the best ad Microsoft has ever done, but you probably have to be a Seinfeld fan to appreciate it.

I agree . . . the best Microsoft has ever done, but that's not saying much.

Now, as for the best Seinfeld ever was part of; I remember some Apple ads with him back when he was famous.

Vista = Tight shoes that will cause you pain until they stretch in to System 7

System X = right fitting shoes that won't give you any pain from the start. Oh, and "It' a ten" per Seinfeld.

Oh, and the "Conquestidor brand! That was good! I recall the conquestidors were a small number of guys that didn't believe that sticks with a sharp end was the best way to go, even though a popular poll at the time said that 96% of the people favored sharp sticks.

Sharp sticks = fail

Gunpowder = blow the feathers off of sharp stick users

Ahhh - got it. The point of the ad is to make us aware of the OS that has 92% market dominance.

I don't get it!

I gotta say, I was a bit disappointed with this commercial. It's not really clear what Microsoft is trying to convey. Microsoft has very smart people on their team and they make more money in 3 days then Apple makes in a week; you'd think they'd be able to come up with something better. Very disappointed.:(:

I just want to know when they will stop using that excuse to prove relevance. We know that the OS is this and that and has such and such market share Windows.... when will you show us WHY we should consider it for our next purchase?

Why do you think the most recognised brand in the world – Coca-Cola – is advertising?
Although it may sound weird to some, brand recognition is why.
