here for all who are interested a review from anandtech of the U2711
..sometimes it pays to use "older" technology

If you want something a little smaller, or if you have a need for 30-bit color support, the U2711 is a better buy than anything else currently on the market. This is a great high resolution display that delivers on the quality and features fronts, and we're pleased to award the Dell U2711 our Gold Editors' Choice award.

and Apples 27" cinema display to compare as thats exactly what you get in the iMac too

then we can talk again about "old" technology
Let's talk.

I just got my u2711. I'm seeing a green to reddish tint from right to left. The whites are definitely different from side to side. Its pretty easy to see but I circled two areas where you can see the different tints. Anyone else have this problem?

The AG coating on this monitor sucks and looks even rougher next to the imac. My wife noticed this without me saying anything the first time she sat down. (she almost packed up and left me when she saw the portrait setup, its a little awesome and kinda useless at the same time)

I am coming from a 3007wfp I have had for 4 years. The u2711 is better on the color and brightness but white pages and text still sparkle just the same.
I have not read one review that mentions anything about this. It is about time someone nailed them for this. It sucks.

The picture looks great, but does anyone else have an issue with the bottom most menu button light flickering/blinking on and off? It's a small nitpick, but it's starting to annoy me since it happens right at the edge of my peripheral vision.

My first u2711 had green tint i right upper corner. The replacement, second u2711 had warm yellow tint in the middle of the display. I returned and got my money back.

My friend also bought u2711 and his had the even worse yellow tint in the middle of the screen.

Remind something, ain't it?

Can somebody please have a look at this screen shot. I'm not sure if there is yellow tint on the bottom right hand side. Toke the screen off the install a ssd, now the tint looks different to me.

Yuck! that's really bad news, i was hoping this would have been my solution as well.

As a result i just ordered a new iMac, my 4th
TNT is picking up the two i have put back in their boxes tomorrow, and they will probably be shipped to some unfortunate refurb buyer real soon and be back in circulation.

The lack of options is frustrating, i ultimately decided that the 2011 MBP are too far into their refresh cycle to get one of those instead, and i also doubt BattleField 3 will run well on the MBP compared to the iMac (with 2GB HD6970's) when that game is released. I was REALLY close to ordering the U2711 today, and just use my 2010 MBP on that and wait out for the iMac screen problems to get solved, but then again, every day brings us closer to the next refresh and I like my stuff to retain it's "top of the line" status for atleast half a year or more before the urge for the next model sets in

Next refresh probably early Dec or Jan. Hopefully Apple improves on this screen hassle.

my dell u2711 is ok no other tints then the ones i was expecting on any display today , very vibrant colors , and best of all its less glossy then the apple display , which was the main reason for getting the dell and not the apple and the response times are a little better too , still nothing a gamer would even try to speak of , but worth mentioning
i mean a display of those prices should offer today in 2011 nothing less then a response time of less then 5ms ,and this 16:9 size is just not ideal

like i said in another post if you wait for apple to solve the problem :
Apple does not have a solution , but they admire your problem

They won't. It is not a new issue so if they haven't corrected it by now don't count on them ever correcting it.
It's impossible to fix this problem completely. Because of technological limitations. Enzo uses the same LG matrix but with sophisticated backlit consistency stabilization system or whatever. Apple simply can't afford such expensive system. Imac is a product for masses. So best advice choose your imac in store, don't buy it blind. And yep with time tint or more warm color could appear because of temperature, lamp degradation, etc.

In the end I have almost perfect display and enjoy my powerful, cool imac.

there was that old saying ..quality has its price

i just bought the dell u2711, because it offered a less glossy display then the apple and is really usable ..my needs just a monitor big enough to watch movies from the sofa that isn't to glossy(the display not the sofa ;)) , the dell fits that bill perfectly ,
but for my work i got a HP dream color 24" and its really worth the money, rotating display and hight adjustable i need those features , but the dream color is really a dream never expected to find a lcd with that kind of quality picture but its only a 24inch display , so to small for most here

I received my second iMac 27 today and after I started it up I tested the screen for yellowing and it looks good thus far after about 20minutes of being on. I'm going to leave it on for a couple of hours to make sure that it doesn't have the yellowing that my first one had and hopefully this will pass the deadpixels test too today.

Nice one! congrats :D

now do yourself the favor and stop testing it and start enjoying your iMac.
If you keep staring at it you might end up seeing something that isn't there.

I keep looking at these pictures and seeing that the shots of the screens look yellow. Then I start to worry that it's my screen making it appear worse! It's really nerve racking. I know my screen has a slight tint but it's so minor and uniform that it was not worth returning for another unit. If my brightness is above 1/3-1/2 there's hardly any way to notice it at all anyway

Wait until it gets dark and then dim your display some. This is when you will see the yellowing the most.

well, i'm looking at them on my MBP not an iMac, and they look nice and white to me. remember your viewing angle plays a role as well.

What happened with your Imac(s)? I remember you have a perfect screen.

Regarding U2711, I just copied the negative feedbacks, try to read the whole topic about it. It's not that bad, but you have to choose it rather carefully, like Imac.

@Odvan,

i had this issue: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1174626/ with my "perfect iMac" and the second one had the same AND a yellow screen.

If the one i have on order isn't perfect, i will either end up buying a i5 "highend store machine" instead of the BTO, and give that a few tries.

OR im really seriously thinking about a DIY Hackintosh i7 in a stylish Lian-Li PC-V600F with a real desktop GPU, SSD's and a Dell Ultrasharp (thanks for the link...it's a NICE screen :) )

(black fans will do BTW, it's not a racecar)

I just got a refurb 2011 27". When I do the grey bars test, I can sort of see a little yellowish tint to the darker grey bar toward the bottom but seriously - if I didn't do that test, there is no way I can otherwise tell there is a yellow tint. The screen looks totally perfect to me.

I realize it's a subjective test, and some people have obvious yellowing on their screen. I'm happy with mine though.

so when you read these forums with the white background and as you read down the page to the bottom of your screen , you can't notice any yellowing?

@KasperH

I see. Can't imagine how would I switch from my imac to anything else. It's an awesome machine, I like it more and more every day. :)

I hope it doesn't come to that, and that iMac #4 will indeed be perfect.
But i'm hooked on OSX and a big monitor, so if Apple can't deliver, i might end up with a DIY. It's ridicules to spend so much time waiting for replacements as i feel i have done now.
