Really? A display could get yellowing or dead pixels from being removed and reinstalled?

Hello folks.

Just came back from holidays, My Refurbish iMac 27" was delivered last week. Just install it on my desk and after some test, I must realize that the screen is infected.

Check my pics (on the very left the red tint is due to my iPhone4's crappy camera).

I'm already tired of making back and forth with Apple...

I can't make out the address of that picture, which is a really good test, what is the link to that picture?

That's a really good test.

Do you guys find that the yellow mostly disappears if you tilt your monitor back as far as it can go -- i.e. so that you're looking at it while it's at a 120 degree angle back from you, rather than at a 90 degree angle? It does on mine.

Seems to confirm the theory that the yellow is due to the angle that the light is hitting the LED diffusion layer. But I'm assuming that in a properly aligned diffusion layer, you shouldn't be seeing yellow when the screen is at a 90 degree angle....

@jm88 : I was in the same situation last year with the 21,5 imac, I've changed it three times without success so i decided to stop the madness, I was thinking "maybe next year the problem will be solved", I was wrong.

Now I plan to send back the 27" although the yellow tint is not that much noticeable, but what would it be when I'll be working on serious graphic design or painting in Photoshop ?

The only solution is to take a Mini Quad or a Dual i7 with discrete graphics and pair it with my old Dell 20"

It's a shame, that 27 " iMac is so gorgeous & quiet...

Brought my display in to the Apple Store, the Genius assured me, that the grey band at the bottom of the screen is quite common among large LCD displays and that all iMac's have a slight grey bar on the edges of the screen, which varies in degree. He told me that is just how the display sits in front of the led's emitting the light.

Most people do not notice it, but I have OCD and well....yea.

I told him that I barely notice it, the screen is totally uniform, with no dead pixels and since it is a normal occurrence on large displays, just varies in degree, the chance that I may get a worse display is 50/50.

The tech also informed me that my display was one of the best he had scene, being uniform, no dead pixels, no yellowing and a normal grey bottom edge, at a very unnoticeable degree.

What really put my mind at ease, was the fact that all iMac's have it, it is normal for the LED backlight behind a 27" display. Obviously in varying degrees.

I am glad I went, I am happy to know my iMac checked out with flying colors, now I can finally enjoy my iMac.

Thanks, Apple.

P.S And for those who told me not to replace my display.....sorry I doubted you!

Thats all I needed to

Why does the entire border appear white? As if someone retouched that photo.

Yeah strange isn't it, I think it's the panasonic dmc-z10.

I don't see the border with my eyes that's why it's difficult to take a good picture.

bought base model 21.5" imac from apple retail in canada. Exchanged it twice. All three imacs had yellowing, but on the right hand side of the display. the guys at retail didnt really believe me when i told them the screen didn't display colors uniformly :(

very disappointed and decided to return it in the end. ironically, i started noticing the yellow tint because of Lion's new full screen feature, which gives u huge swaths of white space in mail and safari.

now i'm debating if i shld order a refurb imac online or buy a laptop mac instead.

but now i'm curious as to whether anyone actually has a screen with relatively uniform colours (or if those 'perfect' screens out there are just barely acceptable). pics of good screens out there, anyone?

I went thorugh 3 21.5 imacs they all have yellow tinges. But the 27 inchers don't have them. So i bought a 27 inch instead and its perfect. Good luck with your next mac.

I wish I would have read this before ordering my brand new 21.5" the other day. Hopefully there's nothing wrong with it because I live in Atlantic Canada and the nearest apple store is a 9 hour drive from here.

Cheer up! If you look at the poll at start of thread, your chances are good.
Real world ratio likely to be even better as thread title tends to attract people with problems rather than those without.

haha, yeah, there ARE good displays out there. most of the resellers in my area hv nice looking screens. and apple retail in richmond and oakridge, bc have quite a few good screens. pacific centre seems like it's plagued with it tho, eh. and applecare has been really helpful (much more helpful than retail stores), so it's a good thing u bought online i guess?

btw, i checked all these imacs on the chipmunk website, and it says they were all made in april 2011.

i'm gonna try again with the imacs online, but gotta decide btwn refurb/new.

The poll is incorrect.... MANY of us have had three or more bad imacs. I have had SEVEN yellow screen imacs in a row for example. Just ordered number 8.

You need to look into Statistical Methods 101 ;-)

Your probably right. But what I don't understand is if you've had 7 Imacs your not happy with , why don't you just get a refund.

Out of curiosity JM, how many had the grey bar on the bottom?

And no, I am keeping mine, very happy with it.
