Just got my iMac 27" BTO, good screen or not?

Okay, I know I am a perfectionist...good screen or bad screen?. See attached pics.

I notice that the bottom of the screen is slightly warmer then the top, no noticeable sign of yellow tinge. However the grey bar above the object dock is fairly prominent, is this fairly normal?.

No dead pixels.

This unit has a quiet Seagate drive.

So, the question here is:

Should I exchange to try and get a better screen or not?

Will they let me keep my current iMac until I get the second unit so I could compare the two?

I have a BTO iMac, so how long will it take to get the exchange unit?

Sorry for all the questions, but I just spent almost $2500 and want to make sure I have a good screen or not, god forbid it would get worse.

Thanks.

-Franky

Hi Franky,
first row left & right display are reddish on both sides of the monitor, the rest seems to be better.
I would keep it...especially since it's a BTO order.
You might be waiting a bunch of days & get something worse...
Do it only if you have other computers to use in meanwhile.
And don't mind waiting.

So they won't let me keep this computer while I wait?

Also the reddish on both sides, only appears in the photo

The grey bars are very common. I would keep it if that's the main issue that you're noticing and if the difference in color between the top half & bottom half of the screen isn't super-noticeable.

To answer your question, they may or may not let you keep it. Tell them that you really can't afford to be without a computer, and they may ship you an "advance replacement" (that's their term for it). Odds of this are probably better if you've bought AppleCare. They'll make you sign a form authorizing them to bill your credit card for another iMac, if they don't get one of the two back from you within 30 days.

If you ARE going to try for a better screen, I'd definitely recommend this approach since there's a good chance the replacement might be worse (especially if you're not getting a prominent yellow tinge on the one you have now).

For the record, iMacs all have yellow, shadows bars, uneven back light etc to some degree... You may now continue running around like headless chickens.

Okay so after looking at bad screen, after bad screen with heavy yellowing, I am pretty sure my screen is yellow free, however I do not think this is normal.

I have a "grey shadow" that is parallel to the bottom of the screen, about one inch up. I highlighted it in the attached image, anyone else have this?

I finally took my iMac to the Apple Store for them to diagnose. The tech took one look at the bottom of the screen and told me that they would replace the display within 5 days. I get it back on Tuesday, I hope. I'll report back with the status. He also ran a couple of diagnostic tests and everything else checked out perfectly! No bad drivers or other stuff that the apple care tech mentioned.

Well, I picked up my iMac on Friday and was hoping for a perfectly good display replacement but nope. The black shadow is still there and this time a blueish to brownish area around the corners now instead of the bottom portion. I'm disappointed but it's not horrible...less brown/yellow than before.

whatever.

"Grey Bar" to most people is acceptable. The problem i'm picking up from your screen is poor uniformity. Take the screenshot, cut it in half and slide it across (middle to end, end to end) to compare. Then tell us what you see...

I am up to iMac #7 and will continue to return them until the screen is uniform and blue / yellow free. The local Apple Store managers agree.. For this price point it should be perfect. There is no excuse for this especially since 2009. First manager tried to blame it on glue (as per apple) and i shot that down. However, they did FINALLY acknowledge... There IS an ongoing problem !

Okay guys, so I took out my 14 mega pixel camera and took a high resolution shot of my display, other then the slight grey bar on the bottom, how are the uniformity issues?....yellowing? warm? cool? I really don't see any yellow, just the slight grey bar issue.

My question is, should I risk replacing this display? I have heard horror stories on here, concerning getting a much worse screen over and over again!

I have an appointment with a genius tomorrow! let me know what you guys think before I have this display replaced, or should I even bother?

Your screen has a grey banding on the bottom. I have that too, , and also there is a slight backlight bleeding just at the bottom of your screen ... but I think my screen is similar with yours, luckily no yellow tint, quite uniform white but has grey band just a bit lower than yours, and also a slight backlight bleeding. Other than that, it's perfect :D

When did you receive that one? From where? Any idea of month of manufacture? (Use the chipmunk Serial Number decoder). if I had gotten that one 6 machines ago... I would have been quite happy!

I ordered a BTO iMac 27" through the Apple online store. I received the unit on August 4th.

The chipmunk serial number decoder info:

Serial number: D25G60HSDHJW
Group1: iMac
Group2: Intel
Generation:
ModelCode:
Machine Model: iMac12,1
Production year: 2011
Production week: 32 (August)
CPU speed: 3.4GHz
Screen size: 27 inch

I think I am keeping this iMac considering the grey bar is on like 75% of all units, which the severity ranges. Mine has no yellow tinting or dead pixels and the grey bar is only slightly visible in bright backgrounds. I think I am being obsessive, I should just enjoy the damn thing!

Guys please.................will you not just enjoy your computers instead of spending hours of obsessing over a grey bloody screen???

Pretty identical to my display, which I would say is near perfect, if not in the top 15%.

I am currently at my Genius bar appointment at the Apple Store, with pictures of my display from this site, will see what the Genius says, I will ask about how long the repair would take, and if they can check for dead pixels, yellowing, grey shadow, all before they return it to me.

All I can say is, if he can guarantee me a uniform display with no dead pixels, no yellow tinge or grey shadow, I will proceed to replace it.

I will also ask if they have to send the unit out for repair or if they just replace the screen here. If they do, I will certainly make them put a note on my account to have techs inspect for a "PERFECT" display before it is returned to me. I do not want to part with my iMac for more then a week only to get it returned with a worse display!

Why do I have to be so OCD?

Honestly, if you're getting no yellow & just the grey bar, I'd say you're lucky & I would just stick with it. I don't think that the techs are going to have the same definition of "perfect display" as you are, so I think there's a very good chance you would end up with something worse....

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

So the tech told me it would take a week to replace, I also told him not to send back my old display just in case my old display is better then the new one. So that guarantees me even if I get something worse, I can switch back to my original or try again. That gives me a little piece of mind that I can always fall back on my old display.

He printed out the work order that specifically states that they will hold onto my first display.

Now it's just the means of parting with my brand new iMac for a week :(. Atleast I have my MBP.

Either way, I can't loose, so I made a genius appointment on Friday! 10am!

Grey is OK, yellow or blue goes back to apple. I absolutely 100% would have kept that computer Franky... Don't let them touch it !

I agree with you, however they will keep my original display, and if the two replacements they try are not any better, they will put back the original, I made sure to tell them that and they made a note of it in the work order!

But thanks for looking out!!! :D

Seriously. If you yourself can't notice any yellowing, then why the hell would you post pics of it for verification from others? If its ok to you, why do you so desperately want someone else to tell you it has yellowing issues?

Its like people WANT an excuse to return their Macs. Either that or OCD has reached new heights.
