Weak Mouse

I bought my brand new iMac a week ago. I haven't dropped it and it's perfectly taken care of. There's no way dirt can fit around that tiny ball anyway and now the ball only scrolls up. I've tried pushing down on the ball and scrolling. Exactly how many pounds of pressure did you use?

Weak Mouse

It has decided to start working again all on its own. My advice to others is to just keep enduring with this faulty mouse even though it makes you feel as though you've just become disabled.

Just take it back to the Apple Store and they will replace your mouse.

Yeah it worked

Worked on both my MM and the wired mouse. I just took a piece of printer paper and while on the desk I held the mice in place and pressed fairly hard with the paper between the ball and my finger and moved the paper around with fairly long motions. Keeping moving to a new spot on the paper after about 10 reps or you will just start putting what you removed from the ball back on it. Thanks for the help. I just wanted to post this particular method I used. Do several times if necessary and I think it should work.

To Amigo: At least the 1st post was useful. Yours my friend was not. I'm sure after all of the ball busting (pun not intended) you received, you wish you had a way to retract your post. Hugs.

Mighty Mouse Scrolling Problem

I bought my iMac about a year ago and have had more-or-less constant scrolling problems with the mighty mouse. Since it was under warranty, Apple replaced the mouse twice...but after using the 3rd mighty mouse for a few weeks...same problem. would sometimes scroll up...sometimes scroll down..or left and right...but usually not in all directions.
I finally went to Office Depot and bought some "cleaning wipes for electronics." (80 wipes for about 5 bucks). I also bought a can of "cleaning duster." Again, about 5 bucks.
Now, when the mouse forgets how to scroll, I can fix the problem:
1. turn off the computer.
2. turn the mouse upside down and roll the scroll ball lightly over a cleaning wipe.
3. blow the scroll ball with the cleaning duster, and let it set for a few seconds.
This has worked every time for me.
I use the cleaning wipe over and over until it gets pretty much totally dried out...so the 80 wipes should be about a 10 year supply.
Hope this helps anyone having scrolling problems.
Incidentally, I LOVE the mighty mouse! It was just very frustrating until I found out how to solve the problem.

cheers, the thing which helped most was turning upside down (the important part) and rubbing on normal paper. still plays up once in a while but man was it satisfying the first time it went up and down properly! aaaargh itsgone wrong again... back to square one

Fix works well

Thanks. BTW, also works with an old chamois and Bug-N-Tar remover, in case you don't have a solution of iClear and Isopropyl Alcohol and a sterile microfiber cloth.

Works better yet

Another prophylactic application of Bug-N-Tar remover and a chamois and the mouse works better than it ever has. I'm a scrolling fool. Man, this is livin'.

Mouse Scrolling Solution

I have had the same problem as many others regarding the small scroll ball. Here's my solution.

I got a magnifying glass, a fine set of tweezers and can of compressed air.

1) Clean visible dust around the edge of the hole containing the ball with the tweezers. I was surprised how much was evident after a short period of use.

2) Slightly press the trackball down and blast a few seconds of compressed air, with provided straw, in all 360 degrees of the opening.

If you still have a problem, then hit it with air until it the ball scrolls correctly.

I've done this twice and my mighty mouse works perfect.

dirty mouse balls

I've encountered this problem several times. My solution:
1. Get a lens cleaning cloth, of the type used to clean spectacle or camera lenses (no lint).
2. Spray the cloth with lens cleaning spray.
3. Lay the cloth on a flat surface.
4. Turn mouse upside down, roll ball on the cloth.
5. Check for normal function.
6. Repeat until it works properly.
Works every time. Any surplus spray simply evaporates. Oh, yes, clean the mouse mat with the same stuff.

Sketchy mouse

So I have also been dealing with this issue. I first thought my mouse defective and sent it in for apple care to fix it, but after receiving a new one. sam issue. It really sucks when you are trying to do vector art. CMD-Z again! dammit! is this a mouse issue or a software issue?

I recently developed a scrolling problem with my Mighty Mouse. It started to only vertical scroll in one direction. I reinstalled the software and it did not help. So, I called Apple tech support. While waiting on the line, I decided to press quite hard on the scroll button and try to scroll. That cured the problem, after that it only required the normal light touch to work properly. I do not know what was the cause of the problem, maybe dust(?), in any event it is working fine now.

A few years later I know but same problem for me, would scroll up but not down. Followed advice of above by pressing down hard while scrolling and mouse is now mighty again........ well.......

Especially registered for this; there is a very simple solution that worked perfect for me, don't know how long it will last (first time using it and having the problem of not being able to scroll downwards, only upwards).

-Take a normal sheet of paper, of which you normally print a letter on or something;
-Turn your MightyMouse upside down, with the scroll-ball on the sheet- leave your mouse attached to your mac, open a window to check your motion with the mouse while rubbing it- you will hear a typical scrolling sound of a rattling wheel when you do it right (mechanical sound which you normally hear when you scroll);
-Rub the mouse slighty harder than normal use on the paper (press the bottom first, otherwise you will end up with dassboard and not to hard pls, it has to survive this action:));
-Continue as long as necessary, after 40 sec. you see the screen perfectly going up- and downwards;
-Try tot rub 360 degr., to 'clean' all the way round.

Turn your mouse in normal position and sim-sa-la-bim, the scroll-ball works fine again!:D
No need for wet panties, alcohol, special Apple-cleaning-whipes (I'm surprised not to find these in their Applestore yet, to be honest:rolleyes:)

Thank you for your question/answer. I did press hard the button and it did fix the problem. Scrolling up & down now perfectly!!

These problems sound exactly like problems with trackballs on Blackberries.

I'll use some of the suggestions for my Bold!

My Mighty Mouse tip is hold the mouse upside-down and to roll the scroll ball firmly on a lint roller in every direction multiple times. I've had my mouse since 2006 and wile it is all scratched up from use, the scroll ball works as well today as it did when I first bought it.

If it happens again try this!

Hold it upside down, move the scroll wheel around in every direction for a minute to dislodge whatever is causing the problem. Repeat if necessary.:):)/U]

I wonder if there is a quality control issue with some of these mighty mouse'. I've had mine for several months and it performs flawlessly. About once a month it will clog up and stop scrolling, I'll put it upside down on a piece of paper and roll it forwards, backwards and side to side 2 or 3 times, that's it. After that 3 second procedure it performs perfectly for a month or so.

Maybe some of the mice let in more dirt than others and I just got lucky with a tight one, I'm not sure.

THE FIX (has worked for me several times)

Ok, so this is simple and easy and so far a guaranteed fix.

Spray a generous amount of lens solution/glasses cleaner fluid onto a micro fibre cloth (one used to clean your glasses or one used to clean the lens of your camera) and don't be shy, go ahead and saturate the cloth. Hold the mouse upside down and roll away for a few minutes with a page active so you can see the scrolling action come back. Took approximately 20 seconds to fix my mouse the 1st time, and a good solid 2 minutes to fix it the second, but no problems since then. I make this a routine at least once a month now and it keeps me trouble free.

scroll problem

pressing the scroll button hard also worked for me thanks to reading all the advice on here, thanks.:)

You are awesome!!!! I just did a Google search for "might mouse scrolling issues" and found this thread! I also had the same problem where I could only scroll up. I did a hard scroll down as you suggested and my life is now sane again!

Great tip!

Mice might like a soapy bath

OK, this might sound a bit un-orthodox but after getting frustrated with the MM and thinking that I should try whatever it takes to get it to work since there was nothing to lose anyway, I toke it to the sink and washed the ball with a bit of dishwashing soap! let it dry overnight and it the MM was performing as new!!!! Second time I tried with another mouse (I hooked it up to quick I guess) it did scroll but not click yet. After letting it dry over the weekend it was as new again.

cheers
