The smart kids get Minecraft for free with $25 to $30 Raspberry Pi 3 which can do a lot more than Apple TV.

When I was a kid we wanted the best graphics, now kids want the worst graphics.

Yeah, try finding a NES Classic for Christmas.

I don't know what's up with people. I'm trying to sell my old gaming rig with a GTX 970, so I can get a 1080 to play at 4K. Looking at games like The Witcher in 4K just takes your breath away.

Just in case you don't already own a computer, tablet, console, smartphone, internet enabled smart refrigerator...

I think the breakdown of versions goes like this.

Mobile "Pocket" edition (iPhone and iPad)
Full Windows/MAC Java version for PCs.
Console version (PS3,Xbox360,PS4, Wii U, Xbox One) which is like the PC version but more limited.

I'm guessing the aTV version matches the console one.

It's a big pass for me but I am not a Minecraft fan.
But I would like to know who it is for?
If you are serious about Minecraft, what benefit does this version give you?
I would think it would be the last version you would buy.
And to make things more confusing, there is also a Minecraft for Windows 10, that is different from the Java version that runs on Windows and Mac. The Windows 10 edition is more in line with the console edition, and I believe can play with the Xbox One. Thankfully the Windows 10 edition is (or was) free if you owned the Java version.

No - the smart kids, who ACTUALLY WANT TO PLAY THE GAME, buy the game for a game system like the PS4, Xbox One or Wii U that have real controllers, and don't have to worry about figuring out anything other than to click 'Play'.

I never understood the appeal of this game? Ugly graphics that belong in the 80's and boring gameplay. Am I missing something?

$20 for the mobile version when I've already paid for the mobile version? I'm usually all for paying developers but this version even lags way behind the console edition for crying out loud, and yet costs the same. PC edition is the most current and you pay more for it. Mobile is the most behind and limited so you pay less for it. Consoles are in the middle and so is the price. Hmmm…

I am an avid gamer (PC and console) yet I don't get the attraction of Minecraft. My 11 year old abso-freaking-lutely loves it. If I would allow it, she could exist on Minecraft and Hot Pockets. If she owns it, Minecraft is on it.

Me neither. Downloaded it earlier on but seemed totally pointless.

People are playing games to have fun?

So, are 8bit crappy looking games more fun than high definition games?

That's a dumb response. Of course people play games to have fun. I think what you were fumbling all over yourself to say was that some people don't need good graphics to have fun, to which I still say, what's up with these people?

I suppose when I point out that people no longer seem interested in high quality sound systems and instead buy crappy bluetooth mono speakers and I wonder what's up with that, you would say "because they like listening to music?"

That's the sad state of modern gaming really. The pretty AAA games tend to be just that, pretty. Devoid of any other real good content. Storyline, game mechanics, etc....just utter crap really.

I can name several indy based games, many made in unity, that are more enjoyable than AAA's prettiest games. Unity a lower end and cheaper engine to use. Also not the prettiest I won't lie...gets the job done. The devs know they don't have graphics to push the game, so they actually work on other aspects to the game to sell. Like storylines....they actually have them. Not canned so fresh and interesting.

Minecraft's main thing is it the tech behind it. laid the groundwork for procedural generation. Its a vast game that never has loading. Not even ye old waiting for an elevator sneaky (but not really) attempt to hide the game loading. technically speaking very impressive. And its true sandbox aspect. You literally make the game whatever you want it to be.

Anyone recommend a decent MFi game controller?

My 6yr old son gets limited daily iPad time. During those sessions, he bounces between building his own world in the iPad version or watching stumpycat navigate through his world via Kids Youtube. He's pretty pumped Minecraft is coming to tvOS.

If I can figure out a decent MFi game controller and secure it by xmas morning, this might make for "the big gift" this year.

What say the community, re: MFi controller recommendations?

Cheers!

edit: got confused....mfi is above this, the nimbus is a basic controller, my bad...

I have the Nimbus Steel Series and it sees it fine. I won't know how well it works though until the kids come over but Minecraft did see it instantly.
