PvP was the main reason that most people even played Minecraft in the first place.

ROFL.. CO-OP servers have always outnumbered PVP servers by more than 10 to 1.

I'm guessing the aTV version matches the console one.

Nope. It looks like it is the same as the Win10 version which is the PE (iOS/Android) version at its core.

I never understood the appeal of this game? Ugly graphics that belong in the 80's and boring gameplay. Am I missing something?

Yea, it's called an imagination. ;) The core of Minecraft is a sandbox game. YOU bring the story.

We used to suffer through such horrific graphics because the GPUs sucked. Now that it is intentional it is neither retro or schick. It's embarrassing.

Yea, that's why Lego bricks get less and less popular every year... not.

Gameplay and creative flexibility beat pretty graphics, especially when the limited graphics allowed the Java version to run on almost any computer more than 5 years ago and yet still support a possible world size that is 7 times the area of the planet. Find any other game that lets you explore in any direction for 30 Million meters.

Still doesn't make the Apple Tv a viable platform or give it an air of legitimacy

Agree. Another missed opportunity by Apple. I had many generations of Apple TV, but nkt this last one (same with iPhone).

Steve always claimed that he hated DRM and that they took it off of music as soon as they could. But now we are all locked into apple DRM for movies and it is not cross platform. To avoid getting further and further into a hole with Apple, I have switched to buying either from amazon, or physical format with digital copy.

Take away iTunes and the Apple TV is just overpriced compared to chromecast or fireTV.

I don't understand the appeal of this game, ugly looking graphics in a game that has no goal and no competition. Why the big success?

Also, $20. I remember this was free or donation-ware when it was in beta which lasted for eternity iirc.

It's about creation, collaboration - it's open ended, you can tell stories, build worlds - it's basically like a set of Lego :)

By keeping the graphics simple, it re-enforces the creative element, and allows fairly low end hardware to work decently well. You should see what my little G does in Minecraft with her group of friends - they've created a whole world with a backstory, a new form of commerce, they trade, have discussions about expansions, it's pretty fantastic.

Yeah, but can you save the game in iCloud and then continue it on your iPad? I am guessing the answer is NO (unless you spring additional cash for Realms), therefore I'm not going to get this for my kid, because there's little point if she can't continue working on her world.

On the PC version the data is saved on the server so you just connect to the server that you want to continue working on.

So, are 8bit crappy looking games more fun than high definition games?

That's a dumb response. Of course people play games to have fun. I think what you were fumbling all over yourself to say was that some people don't need good graphics to have fun, to which I still say, what's up with these people?

I suppose when I point out that people no longer seem interested in high quality sound systems and instead buy crappy bluetooth mono speakers and I wonder what's up with that, you would say "because they like listening to music?"
Wow, you accurately answered your own question with sarcasm.

I have a more than decent setup in my living room, but the majority of listening I do is on a "crappy" Bluetooth speaker because it's where I am at the time, and I can't and won't wire the house with killer audio. It's better than my MBP's speakers, at least.

Anyway, since this is MacRumors, and I can safely assume you loathe Drake, I'll ask this: Would you rather listen to Drake on a $2000 audio setup, or listen to your favourite artist on a crappy Bluetooth speaker?

Sit a kid down down with two games in front of them. One that's "8bit crappy looking" and one that's 4K running on a $2000 PC. They'll choose the one that they consider fun. There's nothing more to it than that.

When I was a kid we wanted the best graphics, now kids want the worst graphics.
LOL ... that's right ... I just cant stand the Graphics .. LOL ..

but seems that's how it suppose to be ...

very well said ....

Actually quite happy with this. You can play local multiplayer up to 5 players either from another Apple TV or an iPad or iPhone. Using the SteelSeries Nimbus controller it works great.

I'm struggling to understand why for Minecraft on Apple TV $19.99 = £14.99 but for Apples AirPods $159 = £159??

I have the Nimbus Steel Series and it sees it fine. I won't know how well it works though until the kids come over but Minecraft did see it instantly.
Thanks for those that chimed in re: MFi controller recommendations.
I picked up a Nimbus Steele Series controller from my local Apple
store. That and Minecraft for Apple TV are my 6-yr olds' "big gift" this holiday season.

Cheers.

I believe it was free early on in alpha or beta testing. I bought it quite some time ago and it was about $10.
Actually when I worked on the beta I had to pay I think $15.00 for it and when released we go the unlocked version at no extra charge .
