It doesn't matter that they control when to announce the products, because demand is always going to outstrip supply for a new iPhone during launch. It doesn't make sense for them to have a production capacity of 100 million iPhones just for the launch quarter when they only move 50 to 60 million in the succeeding quarters.

Look the poster you are replying to has far better supply chain experience and superior business acumen to that of Tim Cook. Who are we to question him?

So as usual I'll stay up until 3:00am ET, click "refresh" numerous time on Apple site / Store app.
Nothing will load.
Finally get site / app to load at 3:07am

Demand for this is going to be crazy, probably record sales and back logged within minutes of pre-orders going live. I think even Apple are caught of guard sometimes by how many are pre-ordered at times.

They better put out this fire of an 8 this year or it will undermine 7s sales.

Build inventories. and release it next year as is usual. Because if there is the slightest hope there is another iPhone this year and they can't deliver, they are just kicking themselves in the face.

I'll be driving to my T-Mobile store the morning of pre-orders. When I get it, I get it.

I'm not going to phone in and deal with "systems are down nonsense", only to waste my time.

It's cliche, but I love my 7. No bezels are overrated. I'm more interested in the technologies a few years away that will change the way we use our phones (unless they implement true wireless charging this year). Only reason I'm upgrading is because I can upgrade whenever I want, otherwise I wouldn't even be considering an upgrade.

Predicting shortages isn't really tough to do for an iPhone launch considering the pre-order sells out on many models every time. If the shortages are because they can't get everything sorted out correctly, I would rather they push back the redesigned iPhone than force one to release that will have issues. Learn from Samsung.

The worrying thing here is not the supply shortage, but the fact there'll be three iPhones now.

The product line is getting un-Apple like. Whereas Samsung are now stream lining with their Galaxy series.

Welcome to the new Apple, where everything is back ordered.... Things were getting better for a little while there in this regard, then it all just went to hell really fast.

Either way I think I'll skip this one. First - I'm pretty satisfied with my iPhone 7 Plus, but second - I don't want 1st generation issues (we can all recall plenty of problems with almost every single completely new Apple product).

Many people have an iPhone 6S or later, and while the 7s might not be worth upgrading for some iPhone 7 owners (I will likely upgrade to the iPhone 7s Plus), the iPhone 8/Edition will still push millions onto the iPhone 7s due to price and availability.

The iPhone 7 is an amazing device, so an iPhone 7s is already exciting.

I don't like the all glass design. I was hoping they would go for something easier to hold like carbon fiber.

I find it a bit funny that there is all this supposed demand for frameless screens on smartphones. It may be a "cool" feature, but I just don't see the functional benefit of such a design, especially for small handheld devices like the iPhone. I actually think the frameless screen works best on desktop and laptop devices, where something other than your hands / fingers are holding the screen.

It could be beneficial for iPads as well, but as soon as you have to hold onto the device, you'll have fingers or your palm touching or covering some of the screen.

I think people have this thing for wanting something they've seen in movies (frameless floating screens), but in reality it's not providing some "have to have" benefit to the user experience.

Hail to Ming-Chi Kuo for predicting the same thing every year. Hail to Chuxing Didi! Hail to Mao Tse-tung. Hail to Xi Jinping! Hail to Tim-yin Kok! :D

Yawn. I always buy last year's model anyway.
Cheaper

Trying to get your hands on a new iPhone within 6 months after launch day is for the birds (or masochists).
I wouldn't use an outdated iPhone, not future proof enough for me personally. I upgrade every year.

Most definitely going to upgrade from my 6, probably to a higher tier storage just as well, am running out of space quickly on this one already.

I think am going to start a new three year upgrade cycle, it gets me a good redesign and better performance improvements.

It's so strange how Steve Jobs stopped announcing products at MacWorld because he said it made no sense for Apple to rush products around someone else's schedule. Thus began the era of the Apple Special Event where Apple only announced product when it was presumably ready to announce and ship product.

Maybe TC didn't get that memo. Time after time he announces product that Apple can't ship in quantity a timely manner after announcing it. Why does Apple do this when they control the announcement schedule? All it does is frustrate customers and kill impulsive purchases. Of late Apple's product announcement are really more like pre-announcements. Kinda reminds of the boy who cried wolf.

Because manufacturing, testing, and delivering phones to customers at the rate of 700K to 850K iPhone units per day (along with vendors being able to source their components at that rate) during the introduction period, manufacturing capacity available is still finite (it can't be instantaneously doubled, for example) - especially considering the enormous demand projected for the "anniversary" phone.

The other alternative is to wait 4-6 months before announcement to accumulate inventory (no smart company would ever do that), endure all of the tiny moans and whines from upset customers, all the blather about TC being a failed CEO, all of the Apple is doomed buh-blah, and then let many of those potential customers purchase an S8.

It's a very competitive world. Apple is handling this perfectly, as evidenced by their iPhone sales. Year after year. Especially while TC has been CEO.
