Magic Keyboard please😁
Not an Apple Magic Keyboard but pretty close. After trying several recommended keyboards for my Mini 7, I came across the TECHGEAR Magic Keyboard case. A little on the heavy side but massively useable. Very happy with it.

Since it seems like it'll never come to the iPhone, I'd like to see external monitor support come to the mini. I'd rather bring that to work and dock it at my desk than take my MacBook or 11" iPad Pro.

External monitor support has been there since the Mini 5, hasn’t it?

I’m curious how do you handle the modified layout for that keyboard? I’ve seen it recommended often. But I would be using a keyboard for novel writing and I need to use the “ double quote character a lot. Having it in an entirely different spot feels like a deal breaker. Do most people not use this character as much as I do? (I ask because there are very few iPad mini case keyboards that leave this key in its usual spot and no one else seems bothered by this).

That would be a deal breaker for me, too

My priority is decent key action and touchpad plus small size for travelling so I can live with looking for the odd unusually placed symbol. Plus I largely use the mini for emails and Whatsapp plus small edits to bigger documents.

If I am writing longer documents then I take my Macbook Pro and live with its weight and size.

I have the iPad mini 7 which compliments my iPad Pro nicely. It's the perfect size digital sketchbook when on the go. It's barely a year old & works great, so I won't be upgrading to the iPad mini 8 later this year. No matter how tempting it may be. Eventually, but not now. But i do like the rumors about a more waterproof ipad mini. Of all my iPads, the mini gets brought outside the most. So better water protection would be most welcome. 👍

OLED means it's not tempting to me at all. I might buy a mini 7 on clearance for backup.

On the one hand, I want to see a new improved mini. On the other hand, I already have a 11" iPad Pro. If the mini released, it would see a little more action than my 11".

I hear you. I'm in the process of updating my 2018 iPad Pro to either an M4 iPad Air or an OLED M5 iPad Pro. I do like the iPad Pro for the brighter screen, Face ID & thinness, but I do have concerns about the PWM flickering. I went to the Apple store a few times already to compare the two & to see if PWM of the OLED screen bothers me. I kinda felt something, but not sure. Apple stores are brightly lit and from what I've read, PWM is the worst in dim lighting. Which is kinda funny because I tend to draw on my iPad late into the night in my room. 😂 If I am not affected by PWM, i will get the Pro. But if I am, i have no problem getting the Air. It pretty much has the exact same screen as my 2018 iPad Pro which i love(except for the pro motion) and after comparing the Air & Pro at the Apple store, promotion has ZERO effect for drawing. At least to my eyes.

You'll love the iPad mini 7. It really is great. And if you don't like OLED, it may be your last chance to get it with an LCD screen. 👍

A reduction on bezels slightly and an increase in screen to 8.5” to 8.7”, Tandem OLED screen, Pro Motion, water resistant design, M chip would be nice but doubt it. Keep the same colour choices? 5G with Apples modem chip, better battery life. Will be interesting to see what they do with the new model.

I prefer my Mini 5 over the 6 and 7 overall. Coming from the 5, the changes I'd like are:

- less refreshes or at least more controlled refreshes
Whether that's a hardware or software thing or both.

- lighter weight
And thinner too for good measure (no pun intended).

- Smart Connector or iPhone MagSafe
In order to use wireless charging stand/mounts.

- louder speakers

- folding or slightly smaller

So I can pocket it since I always keep it with me around my home. Note- I don't want the rumored folding iPhone to replace my Mini and my phone because I want my phone to be light and thin, but I might want it as a replacement just for my iPad Mini if the software isn't too limited compared to iPadOS, and if it can operate as a proper secondary device. Currently iPhones aren't designed to be secondary devices like iPads are, as there are some Continuity features they lack.

edit-
Oh and maybe waterproof and nano texture so I can take it to a pool or hot tub.

My own interest in a new Mini has grown after picking up an old Mini 4 for cheap to try out the form factor. It's much more usable than my 11" iPad Air, so I will be jumping on an 8 as soon as it's released.

My main wish would be for Apple to stop treating the mini as a second class member of the iPad lineup. On paper, the iPad mini has always been roughly a shrunken version of the iPad Air. But there is always some aspect of the mini that is behind the state of the art larger iPad of the time. Mini 1 - no retina, Mini 2-3, retina but not full sRGB coverage, Mini 5 - still has a home button, etc. The Mini 6 design was the closest we have gotten to a design that was on par with the Air. But then we got that lower quality screen with the very visible screen tearing issue.

I want Apple to stop treating the Mini as a device where they can cut costs and dump excess inventory of older, cheaper parts. If Apple is going to charge nearly the price of an Air for the Mini, it should be filled with components comparable to the Air. Every Mini has been compromised in some small way and my wish is for that pattern to stop with the next model.

Oh, and OLED with a nano texture option would make it a a killer e-reading device.

I agree. I have said before that they should keep the Mini 7 on sale and offer a Pro-like Mini to those willing to pay for it. Thereafter a Mini SE could be a parts bin product, catering to those who are budget or PWM sensitive.

Mini 5 and Air 3 were actually identical internally and launched on the same day. The Mini 2 was the smaller OG iPad Air, but the Mini 3 was a joke of a release that added nothing but Touch ID and sowed the seeds of the treatment that has continued, to a greater or lesser extent, with that one exception. The Mini 4 was a poor deal against the Air 2 given the Air 2 had the X chip, but even more so when you think that the Air 2 with its better chip actually came out with the Mini 3 a year before. There was no reason for the Mini 4 not to get the A9, even if it was a binned version.

The Mini 6 and Air 4 were roughly equivalent (both marked the increase to 4GB RAM) except there were 11 months between them and all the Mini 6 got for that that was better was a camera flash and a slightly better chip. Then it was blown out of the water by the Air 5 only 6 months later. Given that they must have known what they were planning to do to the Air (M1/8GB) in less time than Mini users had had to wait to make the form factor change, it was unforgivable that they didn’t attempt to make the Mini half way inbetween by putting in 6GB RAM. The jump from 4 to 8GB on the Air took ~18 months and 3 years on the Mini.

It’s understandable that refreshes are less frequent given it’s a bit of a niche product, but that means it will need to be sold for longer. It’s illogical therefore to prevent it overtaking the Air for periods of time. If that annoys some Air users, you might upsell them a Pro but Mini users have nowhere to go.

The iPad lineup could really do with a series of models like presently: basic, Air, Pro in three sizes…

I’d be all over an iPad Pro mini…

I currently have an iPad mini 7 that compliments my old 2018 11" iPad Pro nicely. I'll soon upgrade my 11" iPad Pro to a new 13" model which i think will compliment my mini 7 even more. As an artist, the iPad mini is the perfect size digital sketchbook when on the go and i wanna travel light. So i will always have an iPad mini in my collection. Right now the mini 7 works fantastic. I get 41 layers in Procreate. I can use the Apple pencil pro. It's got 8 gb of ram. It's hard to find a reason to upgrade right now. But an iPad mini Pro would be awesome. Since it's the iPad I most often take outside, 1,000nits of brightness would be an amazing addition. A single panel OLED screen sounds nice, but I think as an artist I'd appreciate the 1,000 nits of brightness more. And i wonder if a SINGLE panel OLED screen would have a greater chance of burn in than the tandem oled of the pros? Remains to be seen. 120hz promotion would be nice as well, but as an artist, i have found there really is zero difference btwn a 60hz & 120hz display. Believe me, i've tested it extensively and unless you record drawing in slow motion, you wont see the difference with the naked eye when drawing. Only perhaps in scrolling webpages and home screen icons. And even that is negligible. Face ID would be cool. But touch ID on such a small device like the iPad mini is not that bad. Lastly there was a rumor of making the ipad mini 8 more water/weather proof. That accompanied with the 1,000nits of brightness are the two features I'd want the most and that would benefit an iPad that one takes outside a lot. 👍

OLED and better battery life are the main two upgrades I want in an iPad mini. After that, it would be more RAM and ProMotion. That’s all I really care about. Anything else they could add would just be a nice bonus.

I’m sorry but I’m out of the loop. Why everyone thinks that Mini would get OLED screen but meanwhile Air doesn’t have it? Is Air rumored to change?
