I'm debating about whether to get the Smart Cover with my new mini. Right now, I'm leaning towards holding off because I'm thinking that I might would rather just have a slip case of some type. In fact, I already have an old one that might work fine with it. With my original iPad 1, I have the case that was being sold with Apple at the time and it has served fine. But one of the advantages of the mini is it's light weight and size for reading, which will be my primary use. Any opinions?

I use both a slip case and a smart cover with my iPad. I think the mini smart cover looks cool and I would get it.

I love the smart cover. It adds little bulk, it works as a stand and looks great. But what I dont get with the Mini is that it lacks one cover segment so how does it keep from falling apart? Is there another magnet?

Does anyone know when the Smart Covers will be available for purchase? Can they be pre-ordered on Friday as well? Would be nice to get the Mini and the cover in the same shipment.

Will the Product Red have a $10 markup? The website says all will be $39 but the Red version for the current iPad is $10 more.

It works the same way. If I fold the outer panel over so I have three segments mine still works. I think what's happening is that there is a magnet in the hinge flap which holds the traingle together.

No...just as with the original iPad, it didn't offer much in terms of protection. I've already started my search of an adequate case. Surprisingly, there seems to be a lot to choose from ALREADY.

On the regular ipad the smart cover makes it super easy to hold one handed; just fold it in the triangle and its less fatiguing that way.

I was thinking of doing this too. I would get a sleeve regardless, but if the smart cover doesn't add much bulk then I'd like to have it also as a stand/screen guard.

I'm considering the smart cover but I would prefer it in leather. The auto on feature is cool of course and I like the folding stand. Since it will be a while before release I am quite interested in what will be offered. The thread for iPad cases is quite extensive and I would believe most of those manufacturers will make a version for the mini. I'm torn between a smart cover or a nice leather bag.

Definitely the smart cover, and yep the red one for me. I've used a purple Belkin thing that frames my iPad 1 and covers its back, and it has been protective enough, but really disguises the elegance of the iPad's design. So I'm going for the smart cover with the iPad mini. Hope my interior klutz  doesn't emerge while I'm holding the mini over a tile floor sometime.

Yup. Dark grey or red. I just can't decide yet.

To the above poster asking about the red ones, they're the same price as the other leather covers, so I'd expect them to be 39 for the Mini.

There's nothing smart about buying an Apple "Smart" cover. Overpriced junk. So many better options for a third of the price.
