Yepp it comes down to personal preference again I guess. In everyday use me and my colleagues can't see any difference in Display quality. We use it for note taking, paper and book reading as well as Internet research. Maybe the screen is inferior if your into photography or design. But everything else is just made up. They could also have made 2 equally specced devices differing in screen size alone. But then the price would also have to be the same. They did not go this route and I am happy with it.

I really can't complain at all. We all have near to perfect devices (although I had to exchange mine twice to get the perfect screen). The gamut thing is made up - believe me because we like experimenting a lot ;)

It's not made up: http://www.displaymate.com/Tablet_ShootOut_4.htm

I can see the difference with my (not perfect) eyes immediately. I had both devices at the same time for more than a month and the Air has the greatest display ever. There is also something else: I expect from Apple to use top displays, top components in its products. I pay a premium and expect premium quality. The Mini has the worst display among tablets and that's a shame. Of course, many people cannot see the difference and the display is good enough, but that is not what Apple is about. Since when do we compromise in such important hardware components? A tablet is made up mostly of a screen, we interact with it all the time, so all IPads should have a great screen. The Mini is a big disappointment.

I really prefer the mini form factor. It's small enough that I don't notice it in my bag. I can (comfortably) hold it in one hand. And text looks better on it IMO.

Hey ho, it's all a personal opinion. And you know what they say about opinions ;).

I've been working from home this week and found myself using the mini more. Just so light and easy to carry around. The only thing is is that I have to 'pinch' to expand text more. They are both equally superb. At the end of the day the mini is more portable than the air but the air a better (as in bigger) display.

If the Mini had the screen quality of the Air, it would be the greatest device ever...

Not sure that's accurate about refurbs. They can't claim they've replaced items and not do it. Why would they risk that? And, the fact that they give refurbs a full one year warranty does say they are as confident of them as a new device which also has a one year warranty.

The two refurbs I've purchased have been excellent and indistinguishable from new. Just saying.

You may have got those that was returned for change of mind. Sure they change obvious parts but they wouldn't change screens for screen bleed or IR. Just saying.:)

I have both and I'm typing this on the rMini.
I like both, but the rMini fits into my pocket, so it always goes where I go. It's simply more convenient for me to use.

Not really, it's fact. Air is far far superior , like compairing a grape to a winery

Grow up. The shock value is not working, clearly you would trade it. Any human knows the difference between a good product and a flop

Ironic that you tell him to grow up and then troll.

I am always amused at the mentality exhibited in these type of discussions.

The OP is just expressing an opinion. This forum encourages opinions just like the one you expressed above. So, don't be amazed instead rejoice. :)

I actually went out and bought a rmini, even though I have an air.

The rmini is soo nice and comfy as an ereader.

I had to compare them side by side to notice any screen difference, and the mini was less vibrant, but I never would of noticed otherwise, and who honestly cares that blue isn't as blue as it could be. Very minor in my mind.

Both are great devices, and the mini is so nice and compact..

please tell me that you aren't going to keep both...

It's all about the expectations when using an Apple product. You want it to be the best in each category that counts, and display is one of them. Even the Nexus has a better screen...
Blue is very important in iOS 7. Just go to Safari, or to the Settings app. Blue is everywhere, so yes, it does matter that it is not displayed correctly. Even the Facebook app has it and as we all know it is used by most people.
The Mini is a good device, so the question is if people can live with its problems. If you answer yes, then you will love it. If the answer is no, then you will be better off with an Air.

Like those verizon coverage adds where the guy asks the kids if bigger is better or smaller is better. Every kid shouts "BIGGER". They are correct.

;)

That's AT&T.

I was a nay-sayer of the smaller iPad, but when it came out and I actually got to use one, I fell in love. Its the right size of tablet, there is nothing to big or small for it to do. Goes everywhere, fits anywhere. Its perfect.

The Air (and all 9.7" iPads for that matter) is a great device. I did own a full sized iPad at one point, in 2011 I got the original iPad and in 2012 I got the iPad 2, but the mini is just a better fit for me.

What really did me in was the weight. I know the gap in the weight now is much smaller then it was back when the 1st mini came out, but damn is it thin and light!

Mini too wide in portrait mode

sixrom wrote yesterday: "The width of the mini makes it uncomfortable to hold one handed, which defeats the purpose."

I agree, and also agree about the lack of a swype keyboard.

The persons thinking of designing a tablet that can be handled in a good way with one hand, have not done a good enough job in Apple, IMO. Maybe they have had other things in their minds...

I really like the idea of the rMini. I have tried the original mini and I loved the form factor because I could thumb type on it which was way faster than typing on the iPad 3. The downside was of course the low res screen and iPad 2 level specs but those have been improved to the point where my next iPad can be a mini with no drawbacks (for me at least) and also saving money :)

please tell me that you aren't going to keep both...

Possibly.

Two uses I need the ipad for include:

1. Sheet music.
2. Reading.

I use a full sized ipad for sheet music, and it works great. I have many pdfs on it.

However, my other hobby is reading, and after becoming use to curling up with a kindle - the full sized ipad is kind of unwieldy. I tried the first gen mini and returned it due to the poor screen, but the retina is spectacular, and very comfortable. Ill probably sell my kindle if I keep it.

I may buy a dock eventually and use one as an alarm clock/internet radio in the kitchen as well.

My squeeze box got moved to a different room, and cooking is kind of lame without music.

If it wasnt on sale I would of stayed away, but it was hard to resist..

My bad on the wrong carrier. :)

No doubt that the portability and lightness is the minis main attraction. If one isn't as concerned about those things then the Air is the easy choice.

Most definitely. Like I said, great device just not for me.

I would upgrade to the new rMini if it had the same color gamma as the Air. The washed out graphics just don't work for me anymore. I want something that pops like my iPhone's or rMBP's display.

Or, 10 inch form factor is vastly superior to 8 inch. (8 inch has its places, but experience is not the same)

Those who know, know.

Steve Jobs was absolutely correct.

I agree 100%. Before the Air I would have said the opposite, but now that I have an Air and have tried rmini's in store, I feel the Air is superior. Like others said though, it's just our opinion though.

Hi everyone,

I've had a 128GB wifi iPad Air since launch, and I love it. Unfortunately, so does the rest of my family! I'll be getting a small windfall in the next few days and was considering buying another iPad. The reason for getting 128gb was to be able to have lots of music and videos when I visit family quite regularly who live out in the sticks with slow internet.

I think a second device would perhaps only need 32gb, but maybe cellular/3G would be useful. Here are my options I think:-

1. Another iPad Air but 32gb.

2. Ipad mini retina 32gb and maybe add cellular?

3. Something cheaper like a kindle hdx (I have Prime) or a Nexus 7?

A retina display is a must. I mainly use the iPad Air (and will still have use of it sometimes!) for films, TV like iplayer, ebooks, games, email, surfing, notes. There's not much I don't use it for!

I'd like to get the most bang for buck. I did have a root round the forums, but didn't come across anyone in my position with a part-time ipad.

I also have a kindle Paperwhite, which I may sell if I get a smaller tablet for reading ebooks.

Thanks in advance

Mandy
