The spaces are linear instead of in a grid because now we can swipe to move between spaces - a huge advantage and time saver and worth every "inconvenience" you've described. And in Mission Control it's very easy to reorder the spaces, just grab one with the mouse and move it.

You could still swipe if it was a grid. It would actually be easier than linear.

You couldn't move spaces when lion first came out, which is when this was written. But try moving windows from space to space. Way worse.

I, and just about everyone else who has responded to this post, completely disagrees with your ridiculous statement that spaces now only working in one dimension is better and worth the many many other "inconveniences."

its going to be so fun having an iOS device for my desktop, weeeeeee! ;-)

oh wait, I do work that needs real OpenGL/CL drivers, and robust CUDA support, PCi v3, RAID, and a desktop environment that doesn't RUIN a multi-display setup more and more with each successive release ( towards iOS-ification ). I better keep exploring Unity/KDE/Gnome/XFCE/Win7(not Win8 metro).

iOS is great for non-power users that DON'T NEED MULTIPLE DISPLAYS or other "creative pro level" tools/features. I think the direction OSX is going will be GREAT for a media center system. And apple is, imo at the moment, making the logical MARKET DRIVEN decision, obviously. This however doesnt negate the abandonment of its pro users (hint hint, how long since the last mac pro release ;-)

ReSpaceApp's ability to disable desktop switching transitions has made Lion soooooo much faster/smooter for me. His list of upcoming todo's is great, might beat SL/L if he see these todo's through.

respaceapp!!!

Just to update you:

BinaryAge Bought ReSpaceApp, Now TotalSpaces, Fantastic!

The developer of ReSpaceApp, Stephen, has been working hard. BinaryAge bought his ReSpaceApp a month ago, same company as TotalFinder, and renamed it TotalSpaces.

See rest of my thread for info, and try it out now while it's still in beta. Stephen said he'll give it away to people who help him out with crash logs/debugging once it hits version 1.0 (although I only had one instance with 10.8 DP3.2 a while back, it's rock solid now). :D

I too use TotalSpaces on a daily basis. Its the one app that has gone a LONG way towards easing the iLion frustration over missing features. I'm VERY eager for Stephen to implement the robust multi-display support he's been working on for a while now.

Hmm… Have you heard of swiping up and down, in addition to left and right? So no, there is no reason for Spaces to be linear.
