Thanks, IJ, I'll keep an eye on Kershaw and McDonald. I know Penny didn't do anything last year, but he is a big time arm, and he is still fairly young. When he was healthy he was the Dodger I most feared in the rotation, and - as much as I love Jason Schmidt - I really doubt he is going to bounce back to dominance to help fill out the holes in the starting roles. All of which leaves you with those young guys in the rotation.

It's the same up here in some ways, but I think Lincecum, Cain, and Sanchez are farther along and all amazing talents. As young as he is, Lincecum's future is off the charts. Best young pitching rotation I've seen in decades. I also really like the improvements to the Giants bullpen to go along with Wilson and the other young arms there. You want to some Giant's pitching names to remember? Look out for Madison Bumgarner and Tim Alderson next year or the year after.

Anyways, thanks for the insight.

Penny won a few games, but his ERA was over 6.00 and it was clear he was struggling, then he went on the DL for the entire second half. I believe the club had a problem with his work and conditioning habits all along, which is why they didn't pick up his option for 2009. I always have to scratch my head when some sportswriter says the Dodgers "lost" Penny when they could easily have retained him if they'd thought he was worth keeping. Lowe is another matter. I still don't understand why they let him go without a fight.

Yup, you guys have some great starting pitching up there. Get an attack behind it and you'll be contending.

Having Blake here to start the season is a big plus, as is having the dead weight of Andruw Jones out of the way.

I agree with your assessment of Penny, Lowe and Kent. I'm not completely convinced that Blake is the answer at third. I suspect that they could have replaced him with DeWitt full-time and gotten almost as much production, but I'll be happy to have been proven wrong.

I'm also liking what I'm hearing from Martin this spring. He's been told by Joe that he won't be starting more than 160 games, and it seems he finally understands why.

I hope you mean more than 150 games? Martin has really gotten worn down the last couple seasons. I'd like to see him DH in the interleague games and get at least two other games a month off.

It's been a long time since the Giants had a good bullpen. In fact, I'd argue that for much of the last six years or so, it's been the Dodgers' biggest advantage over the Giants. (With an artificially-assisted help from Gagne, of course.) If the Giants have a really solid bullpen this year, then we should be worried.

And you're going to rue the day that you promised that much money to Edgar Renteria.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets ace Johan Santana said he was OK after throwing a bullpen session Sunday morning, and the team decided against sending him to snowy New York for an MRI on his balky left elbow.

Johan Santana threw 31 pitches Sunday -- fastballs and changeups -- and said he felt "fine" afterward.
"He felt he was fine, so he's not going to New York as planned," general manager Omar Minaya said. "He'll be seen by our doctors when they come down. It was the weather also."

Santana long-tossed with new closer Francisco Rodriguez before heading to the bullpen for a 15-minute session with catcher Omir Santos. The 29-year-old left-hander threw 31 pitches hours before New York's 13-1 win over the Houston Astros.

"This is the first time in the last four days that I've thrown, but I feel fine and don't think there should be any problems," Santana said.

Smart move Mets, lets see how well you do when Santana blows his arm out in May.

It's too much money, but he'll bounce back this year. Already looking strong in spring play. Signing O-Hud and leaving Burris at short would have been smarter, though, even though I have my doubts about Burris' ability to be a consistently good defender as a shortstop.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Manny Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers finally reached some common ground in their negotiations, a source close to the talks told ESPNdeportes.com's Enrique Rojas.

After multiple failed attempts, Ramirez and the Dodgers agreed to general terms Tuesday on a two-year, $45 million deal, a source told Rojas. Another source told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that obstacles still remain to completing the contract.

Agent Scott Boras told ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick that while he has been in daily contact with Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti, no agreement has been reached.

"We are in discussions and we have no deal in place,'' Boras said.

Boras would not elaborate further on the status of the talks....

Manny...

Can't live without his bat, can totally do without him (personality)

So I keep hearing. Obviously he's kind of a screwball, but to listen to the players, he's been a big factor not just in the lineup but in the dugout. Several members of the team have been outspoken about bringing him back. Russell Martin in particular has talked about how Manny showed him how to relax and have fun playing the game.

I do believe that. The Dodgers definitely need his bat back and apparently the players want him back. I hope it gets done, it needs to get done.

has anyone been watching 30 in 30 on mlb network? it's an hour preview show, and they are doing it for each team for the next 30 days, with a new team at 8 et every night. the braves were on two days ago and tonight, it's the rays turn. i thought the braves preview was the best one out there, way better than the espn ones we always get.

thoughts on the mlb network overall? better than espn?

It is hard to judge MLB Network until the season starts, right now it is just talking heads and no real substance. I like where the network is headed but haven't watched enough of it.

Ramirez and the Dodgers have agreed in principle on a two-year, $45 million contract, pending a physical.

According to MLB.com, $25 million of the contract is deferred over five years and Ramirez has the right to opt out of the deal after one year.

I sort of missed completely that the minor league player John C. Odom who was traded for 10 maple bats last year, self-destructed and died of an overdose 6 months later.

In a strange twist, the bats that were part of the trade, which never were used, were to be auctioned off but landed 10k to charity.

I seen that on one of my reader updates. What a sad story.

Heh, heh heh heh. Anybody want to loan a 3rd baseman for 10-12 weeks.:p

Not so far. I thought I might tune in the USA-Canada game for a bit today. Could have had tickets to the final three at Dodger Stadium but turned them down.

Could Netherlands beat the Dominican Republican in a baseball game? Good lord, what is the world coming to?

They scored 3 unearned runs in the 1st on 2 errors.

Pedro's coming out for a 3rd inning.

You should turn this game on.. it's really good. It's on ESPN2

edit: Pedro's final line: 3.0ip 1h 0r 4k 32/40 pitches for strikes... he looked really good.
