We'll see how this plays out
The Red Sox could pick up anywhere from $6 million to $9 million of Lowell's salary as part of the trade, and the money side of things is definitely still in play. Recently, several players have said the dollar figure is closer to $9 million.

"There's a financial component to it, but I'm not going to address that specifically," Daniels said.

Lowell's health is also an issue; he is still recovering from hip surgery in the 2008 offseason, and his range was down significantly last season.

Also, according to those close to him, Lowell was not thrilled that it has come to this -- "he signed a three-year deal to play in Boston," one person involved said, but does not appear to want to stand in the way of any trade.

Some of his teammates have also privately expressed their unhappiness at seeing the well-regarded Lowell go.

Theo knows he needs to do something with this team. Ortiz is dead weight at $13 mil,Tek is an automatic out and Wakefield is often injured. If he decides to go younger (and wait for the prospects in the farm system to develop) and just plug holes this year,it will be a transition year. Whatever he does,he can't keep leveraging the success of 04 and 07. The fans and media are already restless..And it's only December.

Whichever team that offers him 5 years,or 5 with an option for a 6th,will get him. I'll be shocked if he's back for the Sox this coming season..

Jason Bay turned down the latest contract offer from the Boston Red Sox and was prepared to "move on", agent Joe Urbon confirmed to ESPNBoston.com on Saturday.

"We don't agree with their evaluation of the player," Urbon told Foxsports.com. "Frankly, we have other offers on the table that are of greater interest to Jason."

The total value of the offer Bay turned down from the Red Sox was roughly the same four-year, $60 million contract he turned down in midsummer, according to a baseball source with direct knowledge of the negotiations. The difference, the source said, was in how the contract was structured, suggesting there may have been a vesting option in the earlier proposal.

The Red Sox have no intention of offering Bay a five-year deal, the source said. If another team -- and a candidate could be the New York Mets -- elects to do so, the Red Sox assume that Bay will depart from Boston. "If another club offers him five years, my guess is he'll take it in the next few days,'' the source said.

"We've been talking with [the Red Sox] for 10 months," Urbon told the Boston Globe. "We've got to a point where based on the offers we've received from other clubs, we needed to make it clear where we stand, and they've made it clear where they stand. If they want to re-engage at some point in this process but we're not going to wait. We can't wait. We have to go at the pace of the other clubs. I'm sure the Red Sox will have other avenues that they will pursue or they are pursuing."

The Mets made Bay an offer Thursday. ESPN's Buster Olney reported the Mets offer was for four years and between $60 million and $65 million, according to sources close to negotiations.

Urbon said Bay is not expected to make any decisions this weekend.

I don't understand why anybody who wants decent defense would throw that kind of money at Bay. Yes, he can hit, but his defense is, well, indefensible. As such, he's either an overpriced DH or a defender for the Red Sox, since it's the only park in the majors that doesn't need left-field defense.*

*I'm like parks to be unique, but Fenway is a joke...

I wouldn't assume that because the field area is smaller, that it's easier to play there. It may help slower fielders, but there are many ways the ball can bounce off the Monster. Granted, it's not as tricky as it used to be, back when the surface was railroad ties and balls bounced off the signs in unpredictable ways.

Sure, you need to be able to play balls off the wall..but you can play a massive amount of balls over your head without even bothering to try to catch them. Fenway screws with almost all the advanced fielding metrics. It's a stupidly designed park. 302 to the right field pole is a joke, and the left field wall is absurd.

ESPN/TSN/Sportsnet are reporting that the Blue Jays have traded Roy Halliday to the Phillies in a three-way deal....

You'll be missed Doc....... thanks for stickin' with the Jays for so long....

Lackey said to agree with Red Sox
John Lackey could be close to a deal with Boston for around $85 million for 5 years

Top free agent pitcher John Lackey is said to be in agreement on a five-year, $85 million contract with the Boston Red Sox, sources say. Lackey has scheduled a physical with the team.

Lackey's deal with the Red Sox is similar to the $82.5 million, five-year contract A.J. Burnett got with the Yankees last offseason. "That's what they were looking for,'' an AL executive said.

Lackey has had a couple minor issues with his shoulder and back in recent seasons, so the Red Sox will want to check him out. But nothing serious is expected to be found.

Beckett's in his last year..Interesting to see how he responds to this deal.

It was not designed so much as hemmed in by streets and buildings. Obviously if they were building a new stadium they wouldn't put it there!

The Flyers could use a horse like Halliday:rolleyes:

The Los Angeles Angels are in serious discussions with Hideki Matsui about supplanting Vladimir Guerrero as their designated hitter, a source familiar with the team's thinking told ESPN.com.

A league source told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that the Angels and Matsui were closing in on a one-year deal for about $6.5 million.

The Associated Press reported later Monday that the two sides had reached a preliminary agreement.

In an e-mail to 1050 ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand, Hideki Matsui's agent, Arn Tellem, wrote, "I can confirm that we are in serious discussions with the Angels. I have no further comment."

Nonsensical move by the Phillies. After this big trade they are still at the same spot they were last year with only one good pitcher. Makes no sense.

Agreed...

Yup. Toronto and Seattle are the winners here; Seattle especially. Three prospects for a year of Lee @8M. Heck of a deal. If the season doesn't go well, they can trade him at the deadline, otherwise they can extend him or grab two draft picks for letting a Type A go at the end of the year. Meanwhile, Toronto gets its farm system restocked for a year of Halliday that probably wouldn't have made them a contender anyways (not so long as they're saddled with Vernon Wells' contract etc)

This is called addition by subtraction, even if the Dodgers are still paying part of his salary.

Oh, I've been beating the drum for this move ever since they got Manny (actually wanted it as soon as they signed him). I had just hoped that they could somehow get more for him, but everyone knew they wanted to move him. No leverage there.

Crap, I really like Godzilla, I hope the Yankee's don't get rid of him. Hell he is a big reason the Yankees did so well in the post season!!!!

He's gone. All that's left for him is to get a physical. Wang may also be going to the Mets.

The Yanks are still in need of another starting pitcher. The price for Halliday was way too high and the Sox overpaid for Lackey.

The big winners so far are the Mariners and Jays. They got the best of the Halliday trade. The Red Sox definately look better with Lackey and can find someone to replace Bay. Anyone can hit in that park.

Really? He's got similar stats to A.J. Burnett and got the same deal, I'd say they were inline with their offer, unless, of course, both the Yankees and Red Sox overpaid.
