Former MLB commissioner Fay Vincent dies at 86

Fay Vincent, who became MLB commissioner in 1989 following the death of A. Bartlett Giamatti and then was forced out three years later by owners, has died at 86.

And speaking of spines, the Ichiro HoF snubber has evidently not elected to step forward.

Bartlett Giamatti would have been another great one if he'd lived long enough.

Fun Fact: He is the father of actors Paul and Marcus Giamatti.

A. Bartlett Giamatti was a huge loss. Maybe the only MLB Commissioner I've ever known whose genuine love for the game really came through. The stress of the Pete Rose case no doubt played a significant role in his death.

Looks like the Red Sox may have a go at putting together a team that’s capable of going to the WS over the next three years. Alex Bregman’s three year deal, the Garrett Crochett trade, and some interesting talent coming through from the minors all mean significant upgrades.

They've made some good moves, for sure. The AL East is going to be a dogfight this year.

So the Yankees have ended their ban on facial hair. They will now allow groomed beards.

This almost seems seismic. I wonder if they lost out on a hot free agent who told them to pound sand because of their old policy. And they no longer have the most money. Several teams can easily match what they are willing to pay.

Happy US Opening Day Eve. I'm excited for this year, even though it feels like the inevitable is going to happen (Dodgers buying another championship). Still, the day to day grind of the season is probably the best part. It won't get annoying until the playoffs.

Go Giants.

I'm excited for the season to get rolling too, even though the Dodgers are pretty much everyone's pick to win. Signed up for my free MLB.TV through T-Mobile yesterday!

Robbie Ray, Verlander, and Webb... we might have a good rotation... :)

No one has really talked about this, but I think I would prefer Hicks in the bullpen as long reliever and allow Birdsong his shot at the rotation. Birdsong had a really good spring.

I'll be finishing work an hour early today to catch the first Cardinals game of the year (4:15 ET). They're probably going to finish last in the NL Central, but my AL team, Boston, has a shot at a decent season.

The leaked SF City Connect tops were... pretty horrific. Very Phoenix Suns meets high schooler with a spray paint can, or something.

At least the Giants looked far better in Spring Training. How that translates to the regular season, I guess we shall see. Good pitching, good defense, and timely hitting are the classic formula.
