San Francisco Giants

Key additions

RHP Tyler Mahle
RHP Adrian Houser

What they've accomplished so far: It has been a much more conservative offseason for a Giants team that signed shortstop Willy Adames last winter and executed the blockbuster trade for Rafael Devers last summer. But the team believes it has addressed its rotation depth with Mahle and Houser, who came in on deals totaling $32 million in guaranteed money. New relievers Jason Foley and Sam Hentges, meanwhile, will make a combined $3.4 million on one-year deals.

What they still need to do: The Giants were aggressively pursuing a second baseman as of Tuesday, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. On their radar were Nico Hoerner, whose name has been running through the rumor mill after the Chicago Cubs signed Bregman, and Brendan Donovan, who has fielded a lot of interest from a St. Louis Cardinals team clearly entering a rebuilding phase.

Second base, where the Giants received a mere .616 OPS last season, is a clear position to upgrade. More broadly, Adames, Devers and Matt Chapman remain in their primes. There's a strong case to be made that they'll never be better than what they will be in 2026. That's why the Giants need to do everything they can to maximize this window -- and why their conservative approach to pitching has left so much to be desired.

Urgency Rating: 4*

I was incredibly excited when they hired Buster Posey but now I feel like they, ownership, are telling him to cool his jets.

The Hernandez siging does seem hopeful:

*
1 -- The work is (basically) done.

2 -- The team is having a strong winter but more would help.

3 -- We'll judge the winter on where it goes from here.

4 -- We're waaaaaiting ...

5 -- It has been a disaster. Can the team turn it around?

If the Cubs trade Hoerner, I'll be sad. Shaw was coming along fine at third base, and moving him to second base might not be the best option. I think they might work either or both of them in right field during the Spring, and maybe Bregman as well. Suzuki is in the mix out there too, so they could have a rotation of sorts with Right Field and DH. There's no harm in having more than four good infielders.

When does T-Mobile normally offer the season for free? I've been a T-Mobile Customer for years and never seem to get it, I end up paying for the season

It's offered for only one week in March. Do you have the T-Life app? It will pop up on that during the free subscription window. I missed it the first year I was with them but have enjoyed it the last two.

The Brewers traded their #1 starter and another pitcher who was on the roster last year to the Mets for two prospects! (one a pitcher, the other an IF/OF guy) Seems like they got less than they gave up.

The brew crew received 2 great prospects (Jett Williams and right-hander Brandon Sproat) and freed up some brats n beer- aka salary caps. the dumbassed pundits have the meties wining every WS until 2029 but in reality the brewers will most likely play in October (and lose) since they always do!

They won't bring him back, they need to start spending money on people besides sorry ass Rendon, but if I remember right I think they bought him out or something
they went on with Rendon.
well the Halos don't stack well with the Rangers, Mariners, Astros and the A's look much better now

The Halos are a mess. One of the few franchises as bad as, possibly worse than, my beloved GIANTS.
the Giants have hope since they made the playoffs this decade and have a good crop of talent.
they also play those Rockies more than the Rangers but the D-backs always have a good-solid team.

Remember, any functional team can make the playoffs as the Reds proved and did last season.
they finished 2 games behind those reds last season.

The problem is that the Giants current ownership is running the organization more like a business and less like a competitive team.

The people that used to be in charge were genuine baseball fans, before being businessmen.

The result is a streak of mediocrity, almost by textbook definition, with that one 2021 season an anomaly.

And with Pac Bell Park now old enough to rent a car without paying surcharges, it's harder to simply rely on the experience to draw casual fans when the team isn't as interesting or successful.

Hiring Buster Posey was a step in the right direction and he made some bold/good moves last season.

He's not made many moves this off season and now I wonder if he's been reigned in.

according to baseball reference, the Giants only had a first baseman
just for 72 games, D Smith 63, Villar 9 (both ex-mets)
that is amazing! and they finished 500?
wow, their second baseman must be really tired!

imagine if they had a first baseman or even canine for 162 games?
things look good for 2026 in the bay area for sure!

I did some research on the internets wow that is getting wide and more expanse on my MBA!
What struck my interest was the Giants made a deal with the mayor to
maintain, paint and buffer the Golden Gate bridge in order
for the city to accept anything from New York when they relo'd back then.
So the SF Giants are poor, decrepit team that can't afford pine tar for their bats
even though they are close to LaBrea and Sequoias.

They organization also tried to bid for Pete Alonso in Nov since he was a Met but felt he was not banged up enough,
and has some productive years left, a huge no-no of the candlestick gurus!
The General manager is hopeful that Bryce Eldridge, Josuar De Jesus Gonzalez and Carson Whisenhunt
will fill some roster spots but was very excited over the new 3rd base coach, the Dalai Lama,
though the clubroom is still trying to sew a hybrid Tibetan robe with a standard MLB uniform.

I might see a giant game or two this season, they seem like fun!

I have a hard time understanding your posts.

Building a homegrown team from the farm system was always going to take time, and hiring Vitello was a key piece of that plan.

But in the interim, they still have to field a respectful, and hopefully entertaining team, and that's harder to do when management gets in the way. But heck, Posey is part of the management, so the maintaining the status quo might be part of the plan as well. Though that's not what the fans want to hear…
