NEW YORK -- Barry Bonds' contract with the San Francisco Giants isn't final just yet.

After the commissioner's office rejected Bonds' $15.8 million, one-year deal because it contained a personal-appearance provision, the team sent revised documents to his agent, Jeff Borris.

"At this time, Barry is not signing the new documents," Borris said.

Baseball's Uniform Player Contract states a player "agrees to cooperate with the club in any and all reasonable promotional activities." Bonds' contract had additional language that the commissioner's office rejected.

The New York Yankees have offered the former All-Star outfielder a minor league contract and an invite to spring training.

The offer was reported Wednesday on Sports Illustrated's Web site and confirmed by a baseball official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team didn't publicly disclose the offer.

"I'm waiting to hear from Bernie," Williams' agent, Scott Boras, said Wednesday. "Once I talk to him, he'll let me know what he's thinking."

The 38-year-old Williams has been with the Yankees since 1991 and has expressed a desire to remain with them. But with the team's plan to go with 12 pitchers, platoon at first base and move Jason Giambi to designated hitter, there is no spot on a 25-man roster for Williams at this point.

I wish the Yankees would just give him a spot on the team, For all the good things he has done over the years he deserves to finish his career in NY.

Since when has "deserve" had anything to do with it?

Sorry, but somebody had to ask. ;)

Completely agree. He made a lot of money for his years of service. Neither of them owes anyone anything. If he's not good enough to make the Yankees roster, then he can go to another team or retire.

I think that he would be a better player on the team then some of the people they signed, He proved himself last season that he can still play. I would rather have Bernie on the Yankees then to hurt us with another team.

Obviously management isn't convinced. Baseball is not a sentimental business, and of all the teams, the Yankees have to be the least sentimental.

That's debatable, but the key thing is probably "than some of the people they signed." Bernie isn't signed, so the Yankees don't have to pay him. The other outfielders are already on the payroll. Whether it was a mistake to sign the others doesn't matter now. The question is whether Bernie deserves a roster spot in April. If he does, who gets the playing time? Or do they trade someone else? In terms of production and durability, the Yankees are probably making the right move.

Sometimes you can't be too sentimental in sports. Just among teams that I've loved in the last 20 years, I've seen the departure of Piazza, Lo Duca, Gagne, Hershiser, Magic, Shaq, Scott, Gretzky, Robitaille (a couple times), Blake, et al. It sucks, but it's gotta end sometime.

PHOENIX -- Mel Stottlemyre will join the Arizona Diamondbacks as a special instructor in spring training and will work with the club's pitchers during the season, the team announced Monday.

Stottlemyre, 65, spent 26 seasons as a major league coach, including 11 as the New York Yankees' pitching coach. He had a 164-139 record with a 2.97 ERA in 360 games, all with the Yankees.

His son, Mel Stottlemyre Jr., is the Diamondbacks' minor league pitching coordinator.
