Glad to have Barry joining us on this end of the Bay Bridge. :)
Well we know Barry will be jumping off the bridge when the feds come a calling and Zito might jump off when the Giants don't come close to the playoffs.

Zito! Man, I was hoping the Giants would get him, but that's a helluva contract to hand over to get him! He's still 28 and hasn't missed a start in his career due to injury (knock on wood!). He hasn't gotten the greatest run support from the A's, which didn't help the old W-L record, but I don't see the Giants' offense setting any scoring records next year, either. Zito's a risk with that kind of contract, but IMO there's no way he turns out to be a Mike Hamptonesque disaster.

I guess that's the consolation prize for my man Vernon Wells getting the fat extension from Toronto.

I'd much rather take Zito than Schmidt or Zambrano, but Santana is something else entirely. That guy is scary good.

As for Hillenbrand: I didn't think he did anything bad in the clubhouse in his stint with the Giants, but loads of fellow Jays had major problems with their manager. I think he just didn't produce quite enough in a Giants uniform and was thus allowed to walk. Looks like the Giants' 1B situation will be some combination of Neikro, Klesko, and Aurelia: not an inspiring bunch, to say the least, though I am glad Aurelia -- one of my all-time favorite Giants -- is back in the fold.

RIP Chris Brown and Jose Uribe.

How on earth did we miss this story during the season?

Apparently Ryan Freel has an imaginary friend who he believes helps him make his defensive plays. I'll just quote the best part for you...

Ryan Freel said:
"He's a little guy who lives in my head who talks to me and I talk to him," said Freel, acting as if he finally crashed into too many walls, ran into too many catchers and dived into too many dugouts. "That little midget in my head said, 'That was a great catch, Ryan,' I said, 'Hey, Farney, I don't know if that was you who really caught that ball, but that was pretty good if it was.' Everybody thinks I talk to myself, so I tell 'em I'm talking to Farney.' "

I 'spose this makes it sound like I'm crapping on mental illness. I'm more taken aback -- and in great admiration of the delivery of the blogger.

Ha-ha. That's a good one. I suppose Freel isn't the first ballplayer to not have all of his fasteners completely torked down. Moe Drabowsky comes to mind.

I wonder how many football players do that. Troy Aikmen comes to mind.

Those around here know Im not a Red Sox fan but I think this is worth reporting....

Red Sox fan dies; attended first Fenway game in 1912
Associated Press

MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. -- Kathryn Gemme, a lifelong Red Sox fan who followed the team since the days of Babe Ruth, has died. She was 112.

Gemme died at the Nemasket Healthcare Center in Middleborough on Friday, according to the O'Neill Funeral Home.

As an 18-year-old, she attended her first game at Fenway Park in 1912 shortly after the ballpark opened. At 109, Gemme was greeted by catcher Jason Varitek and former player and coach Johnny Pesky during her last game in May 2004.

Team officials brought the 2004 World Series trophy to her 111th birthday party in November 2005.

"That was a big day of her life,'' her daughter, Lucille Findley of Jacksonville, Ill., told The Boston Globe.

Before the days of television, Gemme would listen to Red Sox games on the radio and take detailed notes that she would later read back to her husband, Ovella, when he returned home from work.

Gemme credited her long life and health to simple living.

"I didn't drink, didn't smoke, I ate regularly. No fancy stuff," she once told The Enterprise of Brockton.

Although her eyesight, hearing and mobility failed, she remained mentally sharp until the end, said Sharon Gosling, Nemasket's activity director.

Born Kathryn Moreau in Chicopee in 1894, she graduated from Chicopee High School and attended a local secretarial school. During World War II she helped prepare parachutes for the Air Force.

Besides her daughter, she is survived by four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

I'm no Red Sox fan either, but it is always nice to hear about someone like that. 114- not a bad deal right there. I'd like to get to 100 myself, and I plan on it! :)

I"ll be disappointed for everyday I live a day past 80.

And she hung in there from 1918 was it, 'til 2004 between championships. That'd make any Cleveland Indian fan pay homage. My first glove was a Johny Pesky model. :)

The Yankees have traded Randy Johnson to the Arizona Dimondbacks.

The D-backs will send veteran reliever Luis Vizcaino and a pitching prospect in exchange for Johnson. It's believed that the Yankees will include some money in the deal to help Arizona defray the cost of Johnson's $16 million salary for 2007.

The pitching prospect will likely come from a group of Ross Ohlendorf, Micah Owings or Dustin Nippert. It's unknown whether the D-backs will include another lower-level Minor Leaguer in the deal.

The Yankees have also been reported to have agreed to terms with first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz.
Jason Giambi will be the teams full time DH in 07.

Felipe Alou to remain with the Giants as a special assistant to Brian Sabean. Terrific news for everybody...classy move to keep a classy guy around the team.

Let's see, which ancient broken-down pitcher would I rather have in my rotation, Randy Johnson or Roger Clemens? Hmm, can I have another choice please?

Like fashion change eventually comes back around to being in style, I'm hoping some of the old skool baseball philosophies (farm club) may someday come around to new skool thinking.......aghh....never mind. Too idealistic.

Who else is there to chose from.

Well, certainly not Matsuzaka.

Or Beckett.

;)

Am thrilled about the signing of Piniero to close in Boston -- think with his stuff he could be Papelbonesque.

With a rotation of Matsuzaka, Schilling, Beckett, Papebon and Wakefield there's a lot of excitement in New England this "winter."
