As a UK mobileme user, i definitely feel that we are losing out in a big way here....

With no itunes in the cloud announced for the uk yet it could be a case of sitting with 25GB of space but not a lot to sync to it!!

That on top of still using Snow Leopard i may be missing out on alot!!! :(

Can I point out not just to you but to everyone that this is still in beta stages who says that apple will not launch something like airdrop to all devices? People are shouting about a service that has neither launched or had full details released.

You can set up iCloud on the devices that run OSX5 you do not need to upgrade from SL to Lion unless you want these to auto update. And these will sync to the cloud and you can then choose to use the cloud apps at www.icloud.com or you can set you accounts in your current address and ical that are unable to auto set up. these are as follows

In Mail p02-imap.mail.me.com:993
Mail out p02-smtp.mail.me.com:587
Calendar p02-caldav.icloud.com
Contacts p02-contacts.icloud.com

As for itunes in the cloud and itunes match again, wait and see what happens the fact we now have 90 seconds preview in itunes means that apple are working on things behind closed doors.

Apple have said that mobile me was not what it should have been, and these moves are to make the service better. I think only when the service has fully launched can people complain about it.

It is also your choice if you wish to upgrade to Lion or not, if you do not you can continue to use the services which you paid for and were advertised at the time you purchased it..

I'm worried about this as well.

I have a MobileMe account that I use for mail, contacts, and calendar.
And then I have another Apple ID (that I had before MM) that has all my songs, apps, and videos on it.
Why isn't there a way to merge these?
What am I supposed to do when iCloud comes out if I want my calendar synced with my MM and my music synced with my AID?

At the moment I sign in with my Apple ID to the cloud, when you use the migration too to move data from MM to icloud l it connects the MM accounts to my Apple ID that I used to sign in with. I am not sure if this will stay like this but this is how mine is currently working and it is working without any issues

DropBox vs iDisk

I would never use dropbox, it's the equivalent of giving my SSN# to google. Their service is so insecure - NO THANKS!!!

I will miss Gallery, iDisk and synching of keychains, settings etc. I'm sure they are not gone forever. iClouds current features set it just the beginning. Give it time.

Not a good comparison because they dont even make Airdrop to support all their Macs capable of running OSX 10.7 lion as it is.

As part of the beta update I just tried a first full backup and restore to iCloud. The 4.5GB backup took a looooooong time to finish and ever longer to restore. Actually, as the next day the restore was still running I canceled it and did an iTunes restore via WIFI sync.

Look forward to a (new) TimeCapsule that is rumored to act as iCloud cache...

Depending on how you used iDisk, Dropbox isn't even a viable alternative. The great thing about iDisk was the ability to share individual files with anybody - password protecting them and setting time limits on their share status. With Dropbox, you can only share at the folder level and the recipient is required to have a Dropbox account. iDisk's method was infinitely more flexible for those that needed that functionality. OK, it was dog slow, but it was incredibly useful, and I'll miss it when I'm gone.

I'm also concerned that when iTunes match eventually materialises, it is going to completely disrespect local metadata modifications. I hope I'm wrong about this, but I'm assuming that every track that gets "matched" with the service is just going to inherit whatever metadata is available for that song on the iTunes servers. Goodbye well maintained music libraries if that's the case. :(

I've been investigating potential iDisk replacements, and so far, none have matched it's functionality. Close, yes, but no cigar. At least Apple gave us a year to prepare.

I still find it curious they would KO iDisk at the very time "cloud" storage is coming into it's own. Apple was really ahead of the game on this by a decade and now they kill it. Odd.

As iCloud is currently packaged, I don't think I'll need more than the free 5GB, but it's cute how Apple is offering mobileme users 20GB + 5GB. It's like crack dealers offering potential clients the first rock for free. If you xfer 25GB of data to iCloud you are much more likely to keep it there once it's no longer free.

this is not 100% true, they can, and have limited the Mac OS that data can sync with via the cloud.

As someone who last month had Apple erase her entire MobileMe mailbox, and then was subsequently by two levels of support sorry, there is no backup to restore it (it was later restored after a phone call to Executive Care), there is no way the cloud is 100% "safe". Since I got lectured by multiple people how I needed to be doing a local backup.... It's imperative to have one - despite the "cut the cord" statements. But apple can, and will at some point, prevent me from doing those backups on a machine running Leopard/Snow Leopard and force it to a Lion only environment.

Will it launch Lion only? I think it might just...... Time will tell.

Canceling the MobileMe Gallery is a huge disappointment. Horrible decision imho. One of the BEST MM features is Gallery!!!

I think I'm going to start submitting feedback to Apple every day until the purported iCloud cancels MobileMe (June 2012)

Email alias

I know that you haven't been able to create new email addresses in MM since apple announced iCloud but what is happening to the addresses I already have registered...you know the ones that aren't my AppleID?

Sorry if this has already been mentioned!

Agreed. Out of all the things that were wrong with MobileMe, Gallery was always perfect (for me). I had my image portfolio online and looks classy. The integration with aperture is almost perfect. My only gripe there is automatically watermarking for export to Gallery. I've got a year to figure something out but I'm worried I'll find no equivalent.

Do you mean email aliases? These get carried Across to iCloud but they haven't enabled the ability to create new aliases.

When you use the migration tool from mobile me to icloud it says it will send across your mobile me (and if you have one .mac email address). Then when you use the mail app in the cloud you can choose what identity to use...

thanks!
so all addresses will go to iCloud..

Personally, I use dropbox and love it. But I also have a personal home server set up via my Airport Extreme. It's pretty good. I even have printing over the internet set up, which required a rather large amount of ports, but none were blocked by my ISP. :) Upload is rather slow here, but it's adequate, and I get 1TB of free storage! Being a geek comes in handy sometimes.

The settings are different depending on your account for example my mail server is p99 and my calendar and contacts severs are p03. You can find out what they are for your account by logging into iCloud on the web, clicking your Name at the top, then View Account and then Advanced and it will list all the servers used for your account.

I moved my mobileme account to icloud earlier today, but the storage plan given by default is still 5 GB instead of 25... Will the 25 GB be offered after icloud is officially released?

No iDisk, Web Space

The loss of iDisk sucks big time.

So true.

There are two primary things I use MobileMe/.Mac for. First is web storage. I've been hosting my website on the included server space for a long time. Why would I want to now pay for server space PLUS money to Apple for storage?

Second is iDisk. It's the easiest, most reliable way I have for moving files from work to home and back. Sure, I could use a flash drive, but I also could forget that flash drive or lose that flash drive. And no, DropBox is not the equivalent. Plus, it's blocked at work.

So Apple is taking away significant services from me, a long time paying user. It can't possibly be that expensive for Apple to maintain a few servers for us using their service. How do we get them to change their mind? I've already left my comments at http://www.apple.com/feedback/ . Perhaps we should all flood them with comments?

What do I use?

Let's see, I use Gallery, iDisk and Mail on Mobile Me. So they are cutting out most of what I use. My daughter uses. Gallery, iWeb, iDisk and Mail. Neither one of are happy.

A little confused on this.

Sorry folks, but I need some clarity on this.

I have a MM Family pack, all set up with alias's and the like. I never use my primary email of my Mac account for spam purposes, and only use alias's. My main account (me) is tied to my mm mail, iTunes purchases (both music and apps) and syncing all devices. My machines i.e. my iMac at home, my wife's, my son's, and my MBA are all allowed on this account.

Now, my wife has her own MM account- same as above (on her mac)
My son- same as above (on his mac)

The confusion I have are the following:
Each family member has his/her iTunes account id for purchases (I don't like this) and it's a bear to manage. I.E. my son buys apps on his computer, my wife buys same app as she never uses his id on her computer...etc.

You cannot tell what devices or id's are authorized on iTunes, other than the # it tells you; and you can only reset this once a year to sort it. Secondly, I would like to get this more streamlined into 1 account for purchases/ history for my family pack. Additionally, I like to use back to my mac for my sons machine, but cannot because he has his own id- (I think the master account holder should be able to B2MM on any device in the master category IMO).

Enter iCloud. I do not run lion. My dev account consists of 3 separate id's for the devices (again adding to the confusion).

If the above makes sense, (I hope I got it clear), how would one streamline this process if it were you?

Many thanks for tips you can offer me. As we know, as it stands apple will not transfer purchase history or the like to another MM id, and I don't want to loose my .mac address's.

I would like to see a new option added to apps currently able to publish to MobileMe ...i.e. iPhoto, Aperture to be as it is in iWeb. Simply add in an alternate FTP option.

I have no problem re uploading all my galleries to my own web hosting just allow it Apple! Please! I assume most functions would work although some server side functions might be lost but there is no reason why most of it wouldn't relocate just fine.
