What I don't get with iCloud: docs are now linked with the apps they are created with. So, my pages documents are "in" the Pages app. Great, but a rather simplistic view of the world.

I have projects, and organize my files according to those projects. A project has Pages files, excels, images, …

If I understand correctly, I cannot keep those together anymore with the new iCloud? Unless there is some tagging system, this is quite bad for everybody but novice users.

this is what it sounds like to me, but I can't believe it'd be like that. Maybe that is useful for OSX/iOS integration, so you can easily take documents with you on your ipad/iphone, but it'd be very limited value for those wanting to do work on multiple computers, or wanting a cloud backup of their documents.

so everything will be inside like iPhoto's bizarre file management?

It seems as if if Apple is taking a BIG step backwards in this new world transformation to "Cloud" computing by getting rid of the iDisk feature..

But, hey at least we don't have to worry about iWork documents syncing/updating.. Apple yet again tightening the noose on their ecosystem..

Makes no sense..

One simple question I haven't quite been able to Google a direct answer to...I think/hope the answer is "Yes"...

Can a Snow Leopard computer continue to sync calendars with iCloud?

I think I understand that it's just the document sharing/syncing across devices that requires Lion/iOS5-enabled features. But the calendar syncing is just a generic iCal server that should be OS independent right?

My wife and I rely on MobileMe calendar syncing to keep up with what each other and our kids are doing. I've upped my computer to Lion but not ready to Lionize her since she runs her photography business from her computer and (unbeknownst to her) still relies on some Rosetta apps and plugins. She also does a lot of photo editing and manual versioning using "Save As..." and changing her workflow to the Lion-style auto-versioning would make her head spin. Not sure if/when she'll ever be ready...

Just when you thought Apple just couldn't screw up yet another cloud service launch they come up with iCloud. It truly follows less is more mentality meaning less people will be using it and more (or the rest of who still used iDisk) will go with Dropbox... Seriously, why the hell do I need a fuc*ing cloud service that doesn't sync with my Macs, lacks file sharing and user managed cloud storage? I mean really, what is the purpose of service like that? Oh why oh why Apple just couldn't give us the MobilMe services we now have and build the new services on top of that? It's just mind blowing that you can't share files with third parties like you can with MobileMe...

Really couldn't agree more here.

I have asked once, and i will again. How and why would I need 55gb of data on iCloud when it does not work as iDisk.

Anyone care to share here? Also, with gallery gone there go my picture uploads to MM, so that doesn't count.

I'm worried about this as well.

I have a MobileMe account that I use for mail, contacts, and calendar.
And then I have another Apple ID (that I had before MM) that has all my songs, apps, and videos on it.
Why isn't there a way to merge these?
What am I supposed to do when iCloud comes out if I want my calendar synced with my MM and my music synced with my AID?

I 3rd this....I only ever took a @me.com email address because I had to and now it wont let me verify my @me address with my apple ID (@gmail.com).

It just seems aboutluty comical and reminds me funnily enough of the way they started mobile me.

Steve Jobs talked about his big mistake and smiled.... well Steve the joke is on us and our wallets not you!

I want my extra storage (that I have paid for and more) linked to my apple ID not the exstinct dinosour that will be mobileme. What is apples problem?

Ugh. So, just to be clear, Apple is removing the only 2 features of MobileMe that I use on a regular basis: iDisk and Gallery. Super.

I'm guessing Apple is getting rid of both because no one really used them, or at least not in enough numbers to warrant keeping those features. To Apple, they're probably cruft to be gotten rid of.

You can direct your ire at all those folks around here (and there's a lot of them) who were always harping on why they chose DropBox and how wonderful DropBox is compared to MobileMe/iDisk, and how it's miles better and they would never touch iDisk. Well they should be congratulated because it looks like Apple listened.

And who really used the Gallery feature when everyone's using Facebook, Flickr, etc? I maybe used Gallery twice, but nearly everyone's got a Facebook account (or Twitter) and it's probably the most easily accessible in terms of everyone viewing everyone else's photos, etc. If you want a more sedate forum in which to showcase, there's also Flickr. Both services are decently integrated into OS X and iOS, it seems, and there's also the promise of very deep Twitter integration. MobileMe Gallery was somewhat redundant, to be honest.

You are not taking into account the thousands of professionals like photographers for example who unlike the hoards of amateurs seeking nothing but ego petting by hearing the flood of "Grrrrreat Capture" garbage on sites like Flickr, actually value the private sharing of photos with clients who's mutual concerns over copyright infringement and concept theft are fairly well protected by using all the great methods on iDisk.

I have absolutely NO desire to "Share my photos, Watch the World" on a site like Flickr which is full of amateur garbage when keeping track of my content and protecting my client's images are paramount, even Dropbox is highly risky in this regard. You don't see many famous shooters like my self loading their best on sites like Flickr for a variety of reasons, the quality of imagery being one of them.

I just don't understand why Apple can not just charge a bit extra for us pros who actually use the heck out of password protected features on iDisk, I don't mind paying for that, but I sure as heck object to losing the option.

iCloud is of no use to me, as is Lion at the moment.

You can add facebook to that as well (good post btw). Believe it or not, there are folks on the planet that just don't use it.

A iWeb question

I'm reading a lot about lack of "iWeb support" in iCloud, but does anyone know whether or not a person will be able to use iCloud to post a personal HTML page? Will Apple not allow a url to point to a place on their servers?

I wonder what will happen to the storage for people on a family plan?
I'm on a family plan but I do not own the master account... Did the migration yesterday and I was given 5 GB storage. Another member in here that had the master account on mobileme says that he was given 25 GB...

this doesn't answer how they'll handle merging mobileme accounts to existing apple ids or if that's even an option, nor does it explain what they're going to do with mail aliases. Those are the two things i'm concerned about.

+1

I'm concerend about:

Keychain items: according to 9to5mac they are not synced
iDisk: is dead
Mail Aliases: go away (I can't change them anymore already)
iWeb page: will disappear
main mail account: stays as is

so 4 out of 5 features that I use and need go away. great move apple since the mail account I can get for free everywhere.....

please dont forget to put all your personal information on iCloud so apple can sell it to spammers who run this country
Yeah, put it all on iCloud so when Apple gets it next bright idea (some cool i-name even more vaporous than clouds ... i-nebula?) and changes what you can store and how you can store it, that data will all be lost, or you'll have to get their latest platform to transform it to the new spacey format.

I really don't mind cool apps directly interacting with remote storage ala compuserve (yes, I'm old), but we need the ability to use apps we've been using for awhile (iWeb comes to mind), and to manage a storage pool ourselves with our own files, ala iDisk.

I'm really not a big DropBox fan: hate the notion that when I share a folder, every share-ee can delete files, modify 'em, etc. No way yet to make "read only" sharing. Bah humbug.

I didn't like iDisk myself. I use Dropbox and love it. I like how it integrates with Finder and can be accessed from my Android phone. :)

I'm with you. At least in my experience iDisk wasn't as good as Dropbox. Especially if one uses Macs, PC's, iPhone & Android. Dropbox, Evernote, and others are a great way to park or sync ones files.

i'm not entirely sure i like the icloud thing - still seems like an entirely unsound idea in terms of the environment. but it's nice to see apple giving something to people who've already paid for their "services"

But Apple's giving you what you've paid for, plus potentially an extension and a year to find replacement services as they've decided to change their strategy. It really doesn't sound that unreasonable to me. It's just an open invitation for someone out there to come up with an alternative solution.

Viable Alternatives

There is a great mish-mash of alternatives to MobileMe. I have a MM account, but also use:

Dropbox (plus the many others, like Amazon S3, if you don't like their TOS)

Smugmug - Best photo gallery IMHO. Cheap ($30). Has loader for iPhoto (probably also Aperture). Does some video too. No storage limit on photos.

XMarks - bookmark sync

Crash Plan: On-line backup

I don't do static websites, but I'm sure that there is something available that is free or nearly so. Geocities still around? (Ha!)

I never used iDisk because it was just too slow. WEBDAV was cool a few years ago. You could do the local cache, but the lack of block-level sync just made it a pig.

From time to time I´m uploading files for my friends on my iDisk space.

Apple does still offer storage capacity with iCloud, so will we still be able to upload and share files?

Just when you thought Apple just couldn't screw up yet another cloud service launch they come up with iCloud. Snip.... Oh why oh why Apple just couldn't give us the MobilMe services we now have and build the new services on top of that? That's exactly what I thought. Build the cloud on top of what was already working in MMe. It sure was a pain in the arse getting MMe working-like a week of spare time out of my life. And now, leaving out all the stuff that people were using.

Remember when MMe started, they weren't going to sync bookmarks and after much screaming and whining, they caved. Bookmarks went to the cloud, not waiting to get beat up again if they left them out.

I loved Gallery, iWeb and iDisk and maybe if enough of us raised hell, they will cave.

I have 25Gb iCloud storage, from upgrading from MobileMe. But my iDisk is only allocated 5GB of this storage and can't find anyway to increase it! Anybody have any ideas?
