I still don't know why Apple don't just throw away FaceID and pop the fingerprint scanner in the power button just like on their iPads.
If they did we would either not have a case on the phones or we would have to pay far more for a case that has Touch ID or glass that can scan through to the button.

Lol yeah let’s give a pro model device (and the price that goes with it) an inferior but easier security entrance tech. Enjoy scanning the wideners of your finger during setup on a power button half the size of the iPad Air 4. No thanks.

The upcoming high-end iPhone 14 is expected to come with a pill-shaped cutout rather than the notch that's been present on the iPhone in some form since 2017. While we're still months away from the next iPhone, we already have a solid idea of what a pill-shaped cutout would look like in practical use.

A mockup on Twitter by developer Jeff Grossman shows, at least on the Home Screen, what a pill-shaped cutout on an iPhone would look like. The cutout, rather than being continuous with the device's bezel like a notch, is centered slightly below the bezel while being shorter in length and height, offering significantly more screen real estate on either side.

Apple made the notch smaller with the iPhone 13, but the extra space can't be utilized. For example, users still can't show the battery percentage in the status bar but must instead swipe down into Control Center. One would think that with a pill-shaped cutout, Apple may let users display more information in the status bar rather than let it remain unused screen real estate.

If you're interested in trying out the experience of a pill-shaped cutout on your own iPhone, Jeff has shared the screenshot used in his original image. View the image on your iPhone, lock your screen rotation, and turn your iPhone upside down to experience, more or less, what an iPhone 14 Pro may look like in your hand.

A pill-shaped cutout would mark a significant design shift from the notch that's been a hallmark of the iPhone design language since the iPhone X. A pill-shaped cutout would require Apple to fit several sensors and the TrueDepth camera system in a smaller footprint. Rumors so far suggest that only the high-end iPhone 14 models will feature a pill-shaped cutout, while the lower-end variants will continue with the full-sized notch, although that could always turn out not to be the case.

Further down the line, starting next year with the iPhone 15, there may be no need for a notch or cutout of any kind as Apple looks to place Face ID and associated sensors under the display.

¡Buenas notches!

I prefer the notch. The area above the pill hole is utterly useless, no functionality at all. This design also make the camera hole much more visible to the eye than the notch.

Let's hope they keep the approach of the notch getting smaller and smaller & move the bar above the notch line:

I hope they do NOT do what you suggested, as I believe it looks extremely ugly.

To the people supporting the notch over the cutout... there is zero reason to keep it, even if there isn't much more usable screen real estate.

Just like the notch, your eyes will get used to it and will help move away from what other companies have already been doing for a while now.

Apple also needs to thin out those bezels a bit as well.

Nah. With the display surrounding the pill, it disappears even more into the display. That little bit of screen running above the pill helps trick the brain into not even seeing it. It is the right move and is better than the notch.

I quite like the little pillbox. Fits in nicely with the design of the phone and gives more space for information on the top line of the display, and it's less visually distracting than a small notch would be. I think the shrunken notch this year was a mildly useful baby step forward but the pillbox seems to me like the way to go if they need to incorporate a camera lens and a sensor there.

No Notch is a Good Notch! Put the Notch on a Hemorrhoid Phone where it Belongs! How come there is not enough Hate of the Ugly Low Tech Notch? Notches belong on a Belt not on a Phone.......

why cant they move that pill to right or left corner instead of center. That way the pill punch display wont be intrusive while watching the screen

Just do away with it altogether and make the power button touch id
Doesn't bother me as I'm just planning to use the SE2 and future version the annoyances that come with face id make it not worth it.

The cutout should be in the shape of the Apple logo, how did the marketing department miss that opportunity?

The power button on my Xperia 1 iii begs to differ. It has a small cutout on the side of the case which works every. single. time.

It is classic Apple to over-engineer a solution to a problem they have already solved with a much easier solution.

If they can shrink the faceId components to that size, they will just push it to the top and have the notch. Prefer it that way to the pill tbh. Not as if anything can be done with the display above the pill.

Face ID is not the problem, the front camera and other sensors are. Face ID is easier to hide under the screen.
No, the look is possible, get rid of the crappy features like I said.

I attached the image it’s pretty much what everyone wants apple to do but they always complicate things for themselves. Just get RID OF FACE ID & it’s infrared sensor. Period.

What about ambient light sensor?
