it looks pretty silly to be honest.

but...we all thought that about the notch too so it's whatever.

I feel like and under screen fingerprint reader would be a more ergonomic solution?
Look at Samsungs ultrasonic ones. They need film screen protectors to work properly.
If apple didn’t implement them was for a reason, I think.

Meh. The space isn't used by anything up there anyway. I'd rather have some decent sized repairable sensors and a notch than something really tiny for the sake of visual appearances.

I am just confused, I usually update with design changes but the current rumours are making it tough.

The phones body will resemble my current iPhone 12 design. Even worse the notch is back with a pill form rather than having a hole punch form factor as rumoured earlier.

The iPhone 4 buttons will return, which would be annoying given the circles where tiny.

I am now debating whether to wait for the iPhone 15, and see if the notchless design pans out.

I also am still getting my head around the notch on my new MacBook Pro. It seems the consensus is Apple is making everything thicker now.

I have no idea how Apple is supposed to hide Face ID and the front-facing camera "under the display" while keeping the same quality/functionality. I keep seeing it mentioned like it's a simple and easy thing to do.

That is to say, we're probably going to have to get comfortable with the hole-punch for a while.

When was the last time that the iPhone have a hardware design lasted only 1 year?
They just updated the notch on the 13 line, I find it hard to believe they would update the very next year.
iPhone 8 or 7 I would say. The iPhone X was released within about a year or less of both of those phones. Rumors do suggest the non-Pro phones would keep the notch.

Nah, 7 and 8 are essentially the same on the outside. :)
Perhaps we can say the XR is one of them, but the 11 is still very similar to it.

I thought about those but I thought the XR and 11 were even more similar, at least material-wise. The iPhone 7 is made of aluminum on the back but the 8 is all glass. It really depends what you're focusing on I suppose.

The general design is still very similar from all the way 6 to 8. I agree that the XR and 11 are essentially the same with an additional camera lens.
The display though, is pretty much the same from X to 12. 13 is a change when looking at how Apple rearranged the components in the notch.

I prefer the notch. The area above the pill hole is utterly useless, no functionality at all. This design also make the camera hole much more visible to the eye than the notch.

Let's hope they keep the approach of the notch getting smaller and smaller & move the bar above the notch line:

Your argument and reasoning is ridiculous. The space above the cutout is utterly useless.. as opposed to just covering that area and making a miniature notch?? At least the pill shape cutout has a bit of elegance to it…

finally, a phone that is worth upgrading from my 6s. Makes me vomit each time when I need to see current massive stupid notch
The notch is horrible. I went from the 11 pro max, back to the 8 plus. I just got the new iPad mini, so I’m going to give the iPhone 13 mini a try. I wish they would have kept the iPhone mini one more year with this new design. I hate the notch…

Because smart phones are typically manipulated with one hand. Do you think it would be manageable to reach the fingerprint sensor as large as these phones are with your thumb? Try doing that, and you’ll find out that it’s not very easy to do. That would require almost 2 hands to do that.

Face ID is far more convenient for many different applications, and I don’t suspect Apple has any plans just to ‘throw it away’.
I’m not a fan of Face ID, but I guess it wouldn’t be all that bad if you could unlock the phone in portrait mode…

Google and Samsung had it right a few years ago. Fingerprint sensor on the back, where your index finger naturally rests when holding the phone. Why they got rid of that in favor of finicky under display sensors makes no sense!
I always thought the Apple logo on the back of the phone should have become the new Touch ID sensor..

This thread with such an active discussion about the notch/camera hole shows how little innovation is happening in the phone market.

What I'd really like to see is an iPhone with an M1 chip that can plug into a display, keyboard and mouse, and run MacOS when docked.

Why is it so hard for a trillion US dollar company to figure out how to remove the notch completely without any gimmicks left behind, they had the notch for 4 years.
Just get rid of FACE ID, it’s the problem. Just like how you APPLE thought 3D Touch & TOUCH ID was the problem, DO IT, for a change.

Face ID is not the problem, the front camera and other sensors are. Face ID is easier to hide under the screen.
